Well Researched Study of Creative Rituals of Artists

Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey (Editor)

This book is a hard one to review because of what it is. This is a meticulously researched work on the work habits of writers, composers, artists and other creative types. He pulls this information from existing sources, biographies, autobiographies and personal journals. If you are looking for this type of detailed information, than this book easily could merit a five star review. Currey does a great job presenting this information, presumably sifting through mounds of notes, interviews and books to capture the essence of the artists work habits. There are almost 30 pages of footnotes for this book. I took a lot of notes while reading this book and I will post the writing life tidbits out on my twitter feed as #authorfacts in the next few weeks.

In a purely unscientific assessment of these habits, I can present to you a summary of what I learned here:

Artists work first thing in the morning to get it out of the way early so they can go about their day. 113 out of the 161 artists profiled (or 70.2% of them) began work in the morning, and many of the the late-rising artists also began work as one of their first activities of the day in the afternoon or night time, but the overwhelming majority of artists woke in the morning and got to work within 2 hours of waking.

Most of them followed a strict daily work schedule working for a set number of hours, (typically anywhere from 3 to 6 hours) or until they hit a goal word count (usually 1000 to 1500 words).

Many artists drank or smoked to excess, all ultimately having a negative impact on their work. Another popular excess: coffee.

The one thing I wish this book would have done was to interview more contemporary authors, a lot of these artists are dead and from the 19th and early 20th century. Although the book contains some writers from the late 20th Century, the majority of these are of the Baby Boomer generation, and I'd be curious to see the daily rituals of Generation X or Millennial authors, and how they handle the distraction-rich, socially interconnected world of the 21st century. I think this information is out there and available, and maybe even easier to collect and write about, so I was disappointed that this wasn't captured.

I also couldn't figure out how the book was organized. The artists were not classified by the medium or subject area, and not in alphabetical or chronological order. The profiles seem to be completely random, and considering the audience for this book, I think it would have better been served by some sort of organizational structure to make it easier to look up a particular artist, time period or profession.

But the book is what it is. It is a solid, well-researched work of an obscure, somewhat academic subject, and although this is fascinating to a writer such as myself, I'm not sure the book can hold the interest of someone not specifically looking for this type of information, and I'm not sure it could hold the interest of writers and other artists not specifically interested in this aspect of the creative process.

Wonderful book! Should be mandatory reading for anyone in the creative field!

This is a fabulous book! It was a diligent work of love by Mr. Currey over a decade of research and writing.

The key take away for me was that all of these 166 very productive, very creative folks had routines. They were disciplined in their approaches, and they left lasting legacies.

In working with younger artists (and the occasional middle aged artist), I often hear the lament, "I can't produce art on a schedule! The Muse must move me!" This widely held misconception is probably why the word "starving" is so often associated with artists. :-D As moSt musicians will tell you, a knowledge of music theory enhances results.

I love this book. I am ordered several copies for the course I teach on engendering creativity.

This book thrills me for a number of reasons....

I am a writer. Not as prolific as I wish, but still have published a few things. ( Relieving the Burden of Self on Kindle). I have huge issues with discipline and have struggled all my life with getting "down to it." Therefore, I grabbed this book like a life raft the minute I spotted it. Am I glad I did!
I decided to put a number system on each selection to help myself when I go back over it (as I KNOW I will!), for inspiration.
1 is ...ideas I'd never use. 5 is for ideas that seem absolutely perfect for me. I have done tons of underlining on many passages for
multiple reasons. There are "zingers" on nearly every page! (If a book makes me underline, its definitely worth owning.) That's why I buy most books. I can't underline library books.
One idea that was extremely helpful is by Morton Feldman: "...after you write a little bit, stop and then copy it. Because while
you're copying it, you're thinking about it, and its giving you other ideas." He learned this from John Cage. This is a system I will adopt at once!
The book is fun to read: partly history, part biography, part entertainment, but mostly inspirational.
I know that reading Daily Rituals will likely become part of my own Daily Ritual....so I can finally get down to the business
of writing...which is why I got this in the first place.
I think many people would enjoy it, whether or not they were writers, artists, musicians, poets, or movie directors....it provides a voyeur's eye showing the way many different types of people handle self-management.
A truly joyful book!

A Nobel-Prize-winning bacteriologist, Jeremy Stone, urges the president to approve an extraterrestrial decontamination facility to sterilize returning astronauts, satellites, and spacecraft that might carry an "unknown biologic agent." The government agrees, almost too quickly, to build the top-secret Wildfire Lab in the desert of Nevada. Decent scientific thriller; Must love charts

Definitely not my favorite Crichton book. Bought it recently to re-read - first time was many years ago. It wasn't so boring that I had trouble getting through it - in fact, I read it in one sitting. But it wasn't nearly as exciting as I remembered. It's very intentionally scientific at many points, to the extent that it feels like you're reading a journal article complete with charts/graphs instead of a novel.

The climax of the story, in my opinion, kind of comes and goes without a whole lot of memorability and the story ends pretty suddenly. I found myself thinking, "Wait, is that it?" towards the end. Felt like a lot of build up for a kind of mediocre finish.

As usual, Crichton did a ton of research while writing his book and it shows. There's no lack of very specific terminologies and procedural descriptions.

One thing that may not affect other people like it did me - sometimes my wife and I like to read together with each of us taking turns reading sections out loud. We started this book that way, but had to stop because of the many graphs and charts that we kept having to try to describe. Curious how an audiobook version would handle this.

Overall, I'd read it again in several years but it didn't leave much of an impression.

Horror without Exclamation Points

As embarrassing as this sounds, I had never read a Michael Crichton novel when I purchased “The Andromeda Strain,” first published in 1969. In my defense, I’ve seen the 1971 movie many times over the years. And after finally reading the book, I found that the movie was completely faithful to the story, thanks to screenwriters Crichton and Nelson Gidding.

What I found most intriguing is Crichton’s clinical style in telling the story of a military satellite that has returned to earth, infected with a virus from space. The writing is meticulous as it carefully describes the protocols around retrieving the satellite and examining the only two victims still alive—a Sterno-huffing old man and a baby—after the virus wipes out the tiny population of Piedmont, Arizona. This is an interesting approach to building tension without resorting to hysterics. But don’t fool yourself—the terror is real as we learn that nuclear weapons may be needed to halt the spread. In the movie, the lead scientist Dr. Jeremy Stone is played by Arthur Hill—not the most exciting guy on the planet but one whose quiet ways can come off as disturbing. I can imagine Hill narrating the audio book, letting the horror unfold as the small group of scientists deep underground in Nevada go about trying to stop something they don’t fully understand.

Here’s my recommendation. Read the book, then rent the movie. You’re welcome.

Not as good as expected

This book was a disappointment for me. I realize that this Crichton's early work, however, I was expecting more from such a well known title. The book was actually fun for me in the sense of the difference time can make. He wrote from his contemporary surroundings and technology of the day, the latter of which has advanced considerably in the last few decades. Crichton's description of "computers clicking and whirring away" would leave any young person thinking they were made of wood and stone. Also the mention of General Dynamics Electric Boat Division put a smile on my face, as that is where my dad worked for nearly 40 years.

For the most part, however, this was a plodding and pedantic read. I got the feeling that for most of the book Crichton was simply showing off his knowledge of the medical field. The narrative spends too much time explaining in excruciating detail the different medical and biological concepts being used, and not enough actual story-telling.

A Sci-Fi Masterpiece

Written in 1964, this might be the first novel depicting such a virtual reality - one so perfectly programmed that it's inhabitants are unaware that they are living in a simulated environment, and that they are themselves merely simulations.

But something starts to go wrong. Douglas Hall, one of the creators of the simulated world, begins to experience strange things happening in his own world, and in the attempt to make sense of it all he finds himself questioning his own sanity.

Sound familiar? There are some movie adaptations: The Thirteenth Floor and Welt am Draht, and I think most people will notice that possibly some ideas for the Matrix came from this classic sci-fi book.

This is the best book I've read in a long time!
It is well written, the author manages to construct believable reality in the book, dragging you in deeper into the plot as the story unfolds. I found it difficult to put this book down after I started reading it. It's a good mix of sci-fi, mystery, conspiracy, and a touch of romance.

A couple of things I'd like to note:
1. You'll have to get past the first couple of chapters as the author introduces his world, with quite a bit of made-up vocabulary. Although I really have to commend the author on his creativity for the words chosen to depict this highly technical simulator.

2. Reading this book really gave me the impression of a world that was a mix of the 1960's and some futuristic time. It is quite interesting to read older sci-fi to see what people imagined a future world would be like. In some ways the world in the book is certainly futuristic compared to the present, and in other ways it is really stuck in the 60's.

3. You might notice a few of the futuristic inventions to be things found in many sci-fi stories that came a little later.

I highly recommend this book to sci-fi fans! Excellent reading to be had here.

Great Futuristic Story from Pre-Internet Era.

I bought this novel because I've always wanted to watch Fassbinder's filmic adaptation "World on a Wire," which has just been released on Criterion DVD. I wasn't aware of a second adaptation of this book ("The Thirteenth Floor") until I was in the middle of reading it, but I'll have to see it, too (because I enjoy how adaptations work). I will be reviewing both soon... (Update: I have reviewed both filmic adaptations).

The story is slow paced in the beginning, and it takes some thought about what is going on - and that continues throughout the read. It has political and capitalist criticisms, as well as an immeshed love story. While reading it, several movies came to mind: the headset of "Brainstorm," the darkness and mystery of "Dark City," the environment of "Blade Runner," and a little bit of "The Matrix" (not as much as other reviewers seem to emphasize). It is well-rounded, but I became confused several times, having to go back and reread once in a while. In the end, I enjoyed the story, and I believe a sci-fi reader would, too. It has a film-noir feel to it.

It was written in 1962, and some of what was futuristic then seems to be working its way into the present. Personally, I find that most pre-CGI sci-fi writing has a more human level, which is apparent here. Psychological analysis may be fun with this one, especially the ending. Oh, how I want to become a pollster (sarcasm).

Great idea but writing is awful

I have watched the Thirteenth Floor (very good) and Welt am Draht (excellent) a few times, and finally decided to buy the book on which those movies are based. It hurts me to say but the writing is pretty bad. Okay, I obviously I know what the plot is all about but I'm about 1/3 through and you really want to slap the main protagonist constantly on the head for not realizing what the heck is going in. The author makes no attempt to explain why the main character, who is a key architect of the Simulacron system, is apparently brilliant enough to design a virtual reality but to stupid to see the parallels when everything that happens to him is exactly what happens to the avatars in the simulation. Both movies -- in their own ways -- managed to create an ominous, almost surreal atmosphere that sucked the viewers in, whereas this book leaves me stone cold -- and bored.

I'm a writer, editor, and writing teacher. I've never considered myself a grammarian, but I'm pretty good at recognizing what's correct and what's not. I currently teach a grammar course at a community college and have been looking for good grammar books. I bought this on Amazon for two reasons: low cost and high rating. I should have looked at the unusual number of single-star reviews. You get what you pay for. Even upon quick review, I found numerous errors and just plain bad advice. Here are a few examples:

COLONS
In her section on colons, the author implies that there are only two occasions to use the colon: when lists follow independent clauses and when sentences are joined without a coordinating conjunction, as long as the second sentence "explains or illustrates the first sentence." This is bad advice! First, what follows a colon most certainly does not have to be a complete sentence: a phrase or clause will do. Yet she doesn't have a so-called "rule" for this very common use of the colon! Here's one example of a colon construction that she completely ignores:

He was greeted by a horrible sight: a dead dog on his doorstep.

Furthermore, she instructs the reader to "use a colon instead of a semicolon" when the the second sentence "explains or clarifies" the first, yet in her examples,a semicolon would be entirely acceptable, or even preferable! This is totally misleading and just plain bad advice.

Her Examples:
I enjoy reading: novels by Kurt Vonnegut are among my favorites.
Garlic is used in Italian cooking: it greatly enhances the flavor of pasta dishes.

In each case, the semicolon would be a perfectly good punctuation choice, yet she has instructed the reader not to use it! Her examples are simply not exemplary; they are not illustrative of ideal use. Instead, try this:

Of all the authors I admire, one stands out as my favorite: Kurt Vonnegut.
The key to Italian cooking is garlic: it greatly enhances the flavor of pasta dishes.

The point is that colons, when used correctly, create suspense and excitement in writing. There is a kind of pregnant pause after the colon in which the reader, with bated breath, awaits the answer. The fact that the writer is not aware of this is a dead giveaway of her lack of expertise.

COMMAS AND SEMICOLONS
In Rule 21, she writes, "Use either a comma or a semicolon before introductory words such as namely, that is, i.e., for example .... when they are followed by a series of items." This is not correct! She just made this up! She cites the following examples as being correct:

You may be required to bring many items, e.g., sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.
You may be required to bring many items; e.g., sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.

I have never come across a single grammar or style book that allows a semicolon to be used to join an independent clause with a simple list. When it is used in conjunction with a list, its sole purpose is to separate items with internal punctuation. This is just bizarre.

Because it has been so difficult to find a good, inexpensive grammar textbook, I felt I had write this review for everyone else like me who's out there.

I hate teaching grammar...

Let’s be honest. No one is purchasing this book because it’s an exciting read and there are plans to release a movie version soon. You need a grammar book that will allow you to reference something quickly, such as using the correct form of ‘effective’ or how you should avoid using the word ‘literally’ when what you really mean is ‘virtually’. If that’s what you’re after, then this is the book for you. As an English teacher, I’m always on the lookout for an easy to use, teacher-friendly grammar book. What I liked most about this book was its organization and length. It cut right to the chase and focused on the most important parts of grammatically correct writing.
The organization of the workbook is its strong suit. It is easy to reference a particular rule or topic. Chapter Five is entitled; Confusing Words and Homonyms. It is a concise list of words that are often misused and confused. I use the list in my classroom every day! Literally, every day!

Excellent 2014 Update Makes A Worthy Addition To My Library

I regularly write letters to clients of our firm, and the Blue Book has been absolutely instrumental for proper grammar and punctuation. I was delighted to see this new edition — this update and revision does not disappoint! Being a weekly newsletter subscriber, I can appreciate the number of man-hours and meticulous research Mr. Kaufman and Mr. Stern devoted to this project. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it would be a shame if would-be purchasers paid attention to a critical review over the mistaken notion that one word was supposedly used improperly. After all, anybody can put anything up on the web, but this book had to be reviewed and edited multiple times before publication. The 2014 version of the Blue Book is a worthy addition to my library. I look forward to referring to it frequently and often!

About the Author

Jeffrey Bennett

Jeffrey Bennett, a recipient of the American Institute of Physics Science Communication Award, holds a B.A. in biophysics (UC San Diego), and an M.S. and Ph.D. in astrophysics (University of Colorado). He specializes in science and math education and has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school. Career highlights including serving 2 years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA headquarters, where he developed programs to build stronger links between research and education, and proposing and helping to develop the Voyage scale model solar system on the National Mall (Washington, DC). He is the lead author of textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics, and of critically acclaimed books for the public including Beyond UFOs (Princeton University Press, 2008/2011), Math for Life (Bid Kid Science, 2014), What Is Relativity? (Columbia University Press, 2014), and On Teaching Science (Big Kid Science, 2014). He is also the author of six science picture books for children, including Max Goes to the Moon, The Wizard Who Saved the World, and I, Humanity; all six have been launched to the International Space Station and read aloud by astronauts for NASA’s Story Time From Space program. Seth Shostak

Seth Shostak earned his B.A. in physics from Princeton University (1965) and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology (1972). He is currently a senior astronomer and Director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, where he helps press the search for intelligent cosmic company. For much of his career, Seth conducted radio astronomy research on galaxies and investigated the fact that these massive objects contain large amounts of unseen mass. He has worked at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute in Groningen, the Netherlands (where he learned to speak bad Dutch). Seth also founded and ran a company that produced computer animation for television. He has written more than four hundred popular articles on various topics in astronomy, technology, film, and television. A frequent fixture on the lecture circuit, Seth gives approximately 70 talks annually at both educational and corporate institutions, and he is also a frequent commentator on astronomical matters for radio and television. His book Confessions of an Alien Hunter: A Scientist’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (National Geographic, 2009) details the latest ideas, as well as the personal experience of his day job. When he’s not trying to track down aliens, Seth can often be found behind the microphone, as host of the SETI Institute’s weekly one-hour radio show about science, Big Picture Science.
