Everlasting Childhood.

Such a wonderful story! Korie is so spunky and a wonderful protagonist, her character development is some of the best mental transformations I've ever read. And, Veronica certainly throws in a few surprises every now and then herself, quite the 'ah ha' moments abound. This is my favorite story with a mental transformation. A lot of twists and turns, smiles abound for the reader. And the reader can ask themselves, if put in Korie's situation, what would they do?

As much a character study of showman and creative thinkers as a "how-they-did-it" book

A fascinating walk through the history of magic and the showmanship that went with it from the late 1800's through the end of magic's golden era in the 1930's. Although the book explains the mechanics of many great illusions, it's much more than just a "how they did it" book. There are compelling character studies of magicians and the entire magic community as well as an in-depth look at European and American theater of the era. The magicians' stories intertwine as illusions evolved and theater goer wants changed, all done with the unfolding narrative of a good novel. Author and illusion designer to the stars (including David Copperfield, Siegfried & Roy, and Doug Henning) Jim Steinmeyer also injects the mystery of an elusive trick throughout the book, explaining how the illusionist works and thinks. This is a book about people, history, and creative thinking as much as it's a book about magic.

Great look at the history of magic with just enough revealed secrets to satisfy the curious

A very well written and well researched history of magic, covering many magicians from the 1800s and 1900s. Of all the book concentrates on the history of specific performers and the development of magic tricks, it does reveal a few secrets — just enough to satisfy curious readers. It's made me more excited about going to my next magic show.

I do want to mention, however, that the Kindle edition's selected typeface makes it difficult to read. Normally, I can read a book without glasses by simply enlarging the font. For this title, however, I needed to enlarge the typeface several times to ensure that it was large enough to read without glasses. This was clearly a problem with the typeface selected for this title.

When researching Victorian stage magicians, I came across Jim Steinmeyer's book. Not only does he give an incredible account of history, Steinmeyer does so with entertaining narrative. He connects how the profession grew, the competition behind finding the best spectacle to gain an audience, and how the history helped push the use of technology and stage presence. Steinmeyer brings you into the book by framing it with a historical trick he tried. Once I started reading the book, I couldn't stop until I had devoured the whole thing. It interested me so much that I've continued researching stage magicians!

Good resource.

This is a good resource if you want to get into Event Planning, or have found yourself in an Event Planning job, and want to learn about the core process, and get some tips for managing the process and increasing your professionalism. There aren't many event coordinating books out there that aren't totally outdated, but this is a good one. If you're looking at it, you should probably get it.

Bridge to Terabithia Revisted - 20 years later...

I remember reading this book when I was in elementary school. I was trying to read every Newberry Award winning book our school had. I completed most of our library's inventory, and to this day, Bridge to Terabithia stood out among the books I read. I gave this book 5 stars based on my memory of reading this as a child, and on the understanding that the target audience is younger. So the rating is through younger eyes. That said, as a 32 year old male, I would still give the book a 4 star rating. This book cuts a clean storyline, but doesn't have enough character development and depth as books written for an older audience. But I think it does the job for a younger audience. It surely moved me as a child. I was around 10-12 when I read this book, and didn't know the story before I read it. I remember reading the part when the girl died and it certainly brought tears to my eyes. This time around, I didn't have a feeling of loss for the girl. I think the reason is because the book just lays it out in a matter of fact manner. There is no real lead up to her dying, it just happens. For some reason, it didn't seem to affect me much. But - the aftermath was a different story, specifically when everyone was meeting in the girl's home after she died. What moved me was the feeling of loss the parents ad grandparents felt. But mostly this was me projecting feelings because I am the father of two young children.

Overall, it was worth reading again, and I would recommend it to any mature child of the appropriate age (parents will have to determine that for themselves). I certainly won't shield my children from this book when they are old enough. Death is a part of life, and the sooner children are exposed to the difficult parts of life, the sooner they can accept things and learn to cope.

Very moving novel.

I'm a 14 year old student from Europe. I found this novel one of the best written novels I've read in a long time. The text was simple but yet so moving and beautiful, showing us the life as it really is, full of happiness and sorrow. I felt like I bounded with the characters, I felt like Leslie and Jesse were my friends in real. I have to admit though, that this book shouldn't be read by any younger age than 12. Because I don't think fourth/fifth graders are mature enough to understand f.ex. Jesse's relationship with his father and his friend's death. I think the author did so well because of some tragedy she based on the book from her real life. Somewhere I read that her son lost his best friend the same way Jesse did. I have never read a book that stays so long within me, I feel for sorrow every time I think of the last chapters in the book, and happiness every time I think of the wonderful relationship Jesse and Leslie had. Thank you, Katherine Peterson, for creating such masterpiece that has taught me how life really is. Thank you for sharing this novel and your world Terabithia with your readers.

A Children's Novel Worth Reading

A Review of Bridge to Terebithia

Bridge to Terebithia is a story that I first came to love based on the movie. After having watched it for the third time recently, I decided to buy the Kindle version of the book. I was moved by portrayals of Jess and Leslie and their friendship at 10 years of age that dove deep quickly and impacted them both well beyond normal friendships. Jess is presented as a boy who is an outcast and who is picked on due to his poverty and his interests. Into the sadness of his existence at both home and school rushes this girl his age named Leslie. While at first disinterested, he warms to her and she opens his life and mind well beyond his own creativity and dreams. The book marries together youthful friendship, perhaps even the love between friends, and tragedy that becomes redemptive in such a compelling way. While Leslie never becomes a popular girl, her impact upon Jess, Jess's family, the teachers and students of Lark Creek Elementary is huge. You will not be disappointed by this children's book by Katherine Paterson.

This is perhaps my favorite book on statistical mechanics. Bloch's exposition is self-contained, starting from fundamental concepts. The emphasis is on concepts. The presentation is concise and elegant, relying on mathematics rather than words to present the theory. Highly recommended to advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students.

A fascinating and eye opening look into the feudal Japan

If you have ever had even a passing interest in the history of Japan from the perspective of the warrior class who played a major role in defining it, then this is probably the best choice of book on the subject. It approaches the topic from the earliest accounts of the samurai right though to the end of the samurai era, taking a fairly high level, "big picture" type view. The book looks more at the "why" something happened, than the "how" of events. This provides some fascinating insights into the history of Japan and allows the reader to grasp the overall history of feudal Japan with just the right balance of details and objectivity. That said, there is still quite a bit of detail of some of the more notable battles, but high level, campaign type information is not the purpose of this book. It is more interested in letting the reader understand what happened in Japanese history and why it unfolded as it did, with out bogging down in micro detail. The book is superbly researched and is very well written, and despite the fact that it is a "history" book, it is a very enjoyable, extremely informative read. It is thoroughly recommended.

Very Informative and Entertaining

Stephen Turnbull, in my opinion, is one of the foremost historians of Japanese military history, and certainly one of the most prolific. His writings are well researched and represent the various strata of the eras he writes. Starting with the early history of Japan and extending his writings through the Edo Period, events are written not only of the deeds of the samurai, but also of the political, religious, and cultural influences that helped form this unique class of warriors. Forces in society such as the Emperor, the establishment of Buddhism and later Christianity as a religion, and the numerous foreigners who entered Japan are all shown to have shaped them. Another aspect of this book which is very appealing is that where other historians will focus only upon the much broader aspects of Japanese history, Dr. Turnbull provides insight into the samurai culture by giving excerpts from chronicles of individual families within this warrior society, thereby stirring the imagination of his readers to a greater extent. This book is truly a great resource for understanding this fascinating military order.
