A great Writer

When I first began to read this book, it was in my Senior English class. At first I thought it would be some dumb poem. But as we read I became so enthralled I couldn't put it down. Alfred Tennyson wrote with such good emotion and truth I felt I knew what he was feeling. He describes so many emotions that most of us feel, and he did it so well. This is a very wonderful book! And although I have only read it once, that is all it took for me to know that it has become one of my favorite.

Whether you are coming from the Agile side of the house, or have a more traditional background, Johanna Rothman’s Agile and Lean Program Management is something you are going to want to have on hand if you are trying to manage work at the program and portfolio level within a work context that incorporates Agile and Lean practices.

The book offers an explanation of how to go about setting up your program environment in a very clear and pragmatic way. The author’s range of experience in both legacy and Agile methods is a great help here as she offers explanations as to why certain approaches are more likely to lead to successful outcomes than others and provides anecdotes highlighting these points. Those new to Agile, or who feel that the language used by Agilists can be a bit daunting, should find the explanations easy to understand as they are provided in a concise manner that doesn’t get too twisted up in jargon.

One of the aspects of the book I found to be the most valuable was the explanation of signs, symptoms, and indicators of potential dysfunction. This is one of the main reasons I am going to be recommending this book to my Certified Scrum Master and Certified Scrum Product Owner students.

Another very important aspect of the book is the balance that is struck between a tactical explanation of how to set things up from an Agile perspective, her incorporation of some traditional practices she has found valuable (like maintaining a risk register), and her approach to soft skill topics like Servant Leadership. If you are familiar with Ms. Rothman’s work, this will not come as a surprise, but her ability to balance these is a rare thing that can make a topic like Agile Program Management a little more accessible.

I think for many of those who are on the path to Agile, the final three sections of the book may prove to be the most valuable. The sections on troubleshooting issues with Agile Teams and how to work with Agile in a non-Agile environment provide a great deal of sound advice based on years of experience. Finally, in the chapter on what to do if you are interested in Agile, but can’t see how it would work in your organization or can’t determine how you should get started, the author explains how to set up some basic experiments that may help demonstrate the value of an Agile approach to work.

You should buy this book. Pays for itself many times over.

I have read a number of Johanna Rothman's books. This one fills a big void in the agile community talking about agile and lean at scale without all of the silliness of the scaling frameworks. Practical advice with well written prose. She explains very clearly a lot of concepts that I had always thought, but had a hard time expressing.

If your looking to run an agile program, this is the book for you. For such a low price, this will save you from making disastrous mistakes.

Highly recommended for anyone who needs to learn to type (correctly)

Bought this for my son in middle school, it works wonderfully! Teaches anyone how to type, using the correct keys. It reviews previous strokes learned, then teaches new ones, in a "lesson by lesson" format. Then there are practice exercises to reinforce the new strokes learned. Each lesson even ends with some "games" to play by using the new strokes learned. Once my son is done with it, I will introduce it to my 4th grader as well.

Does what it is supposed to do, but seems targeted for younger people (cartoonish and games, etc..). If you stick with it you will learn to type by touch but you need to be disciplined and spend time with it (30 - 45 minutes per lesson).

Mostly Type-Along Tutorial-Style

Read a little, type in several lines of code, read some more.

At least three quarters of the book amounts to a language feature survey using the command-line ‘REPL’ (‘interpreter’ for us downtown folk). There’s nothing wrong with that, per se, so long as it fits your learning style. There’s no end-to-end demo app built throughout the book and none of the code remotely approaches anything standalone or utilitarian.

It’s only in the concluding chapters that the author introduces the SBT, the equivalent of a make tool, as well as one of the Scala IDEs but the coverage is far from in-depth.

In a way, the book reminds me of K&R: It presents isolated examples of good quality code designed to illustrate features while it assumes readers have the architectural insight to build-upon and integrate these into useful applications.

Scala is built on top of the JVM and uses many of the same data types as Java. Obviously a Java background is helpful but so is experience with Python or any LISP-derived dynamic language.

A solid C/C++ background is fine and you’ll notice parallels and conceptual borrowings: Scala’s preference for immutable values over variables is essentially a restatement of the C++ maxim ‘use const wherever possible’ for data safety and easier debugging.

I think the book is inappropriate as a first programming text for beginners. Don’t be fooled by the early elementary examples in the data types chapter (i.e. declaring values, variables and performing basic arithmetic on them). The later chapters on collections, classes and objects assume fairly deep familiarity with OO concepts.

Like the better O’Reilly titles, ‘Learning Scala’ is very thorough and well-written, again, with something of a K&R vibe about it (maybe it’s the Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion examples - even the code fonts scream ‘Bell Labs’).

But the language is less terse than K&R, more pleasant to read with even a subtle sense of humor.

In the end the book makes a fairly convincing case for learning Scala as a discipline that can inform and improve the way you code other languages. But for me it doesn’t quite live up to the ‘Practical Functional Programming’ part of its subtitle.

A Good Book - But Difficult Exercises

I have used computer books that go over 500 pages and the very look depresses you. This one is a compact 220 Pages packed with easily understandable information about Scala. Most of you who are looking at buying the book are already software programmers and are looking to expand your Knowledge about Scala; probably because some of your job tasks are going to be done in Scala. You have come to the right place. If you are a newbie or a student, Try starting with Python.

The book has very little history of Scala (One Paragraph), no lame jokes and you have installed necessary tools and your First "Hello World" is on the 5th page itself. The Book takes the developer on a step by step to the next levels , just like many other well written computer books

> Second Chapter you understand the data types, Variables,Values etc
> That takes you to writing simple conditional if/else type statements
> That is a nice gateway to next chapter writing Functions..I am not going on with it,but you get an idea.

DRAWBACK:
What was frustrating to me was the exercises, which I felt very difficult. I tried to look for answers at the end , or some pointers to how to get it ...No where. It is a learning book and there has to be some answers if I need to refer to. Even if the answers were provided, still there is a disconnect between the level of lessons vs exercise (Write a Centigrade/Fahrenheit conversion formula as an exercise in Chapter2)

SUMMARY:
Scala is a good language to learn. And this book will help. You might need some help every now and then. So find a mentor or a colleague before you begin this journey.

The best introduction to Scala that I've seen

Kernighan and Ritchie's book The C Programming Language is the best selling computer science/software book of all time. There are many reasons for the popularity of K&R (as the book has become known). One of those has to do with the structure of the book. Each element of the C programming language is clearly described.

Jason Swartz used a similar approach in his book Learning Scala. He clearly describes the elements of Scala, using the Scala interpreter. Like the challenge of eating an elephant, this allows the reader to learn a complex language, one bite at a time. The organization also makes the book easy to absorb, one chapter at a time, so you can read it in spare moments over a week or two. Each chapter ends with interesting exercises which help solidify what you have learned reading the chapter.

When using a new programming language I always need a reference that I can fall back on ("How do you define an array in Scala?) The organization of Learning Scala also lends itself well to being a reference as you write larger codes.

So why might you want to learn Scala? Scala runs on the Java Virtual Machine which means that you have access to the vast Java libraries from Oracle, Apache and elsewhere. However, Scala is a newer language with less attachment to existing software. This has made the designers free to encompass many new programming language concepts in Scala. The compiled/interpreted nature of Scala has also allowed it to be used in some of the leading edge "big data" frameworks like Spark (Learning Spark: Lightning-Fast Big Data Analysis)

I have been using the R statistics language heavily for the last few years. One of the things that I like in R, which I miss in Java, is the ability to interactively try things out in R. This allows you to interactively experiment as you develop a code. This can shorten development time and help develop more reliable code.

Learning Scala is focused on using Scala interactively. A minor criticism is that there is only tangential discussion of how interactive experimentation can be used in combination with the development of large compiled Scala applications. At least to me, this is a core attraction of Scala.

Jason Swartz uses the intelliJ IDE for development. I had a really bad experience with the licensed version of intelliJ for developing Grails/Groovy applications. I've used Eclipse successfully for Java, Grails and Scala. The Eclipse environment seamlessly supports both compiled and interactive Scala development. From my point of view, this would have been a better choice in the book than intelliJ.

These criticisms are really minor. This is a great book for learning Scala and I highly recommend it.

Great book on the Goddesses of India!

I have this version under the title Devi: Goddesses of India published in India. I am pleased with this book. Many books show Kali as a ruthless killer and destroyer, here you will read about a softer and yet liberating side of Kali for women and men. This book has many articles from diffrent authers which really gives the reader a look at diffrent devis from diffrent points of view. Once I began to read this book I could not put it down. I would also recommend anything by David Kinsley and Kali by Elizabet U Harding .

I'm in the process of reading this book- and am enjoying it. It is informing and looks at the Goddesses from different angles-which i really appreciate. I have learned quite a bit about Goddesses that I had never known before- and it has answered questions that even my parents and grandparents were unable to answer (all Hindu)

Please don't think because of the former comment that Hindus beleive in more than one God. The Gita says "God may take any form he/she pleases and at any time he/she pleases." These deities are manifestations ( dictionary definition of manifestation-- One of the forms in which someone or something, such as a person, a divine being, or an idea, is revealed. The materialized form of a spirit.)

Palms are an important plant family. Ornamentally, they symbolize a tropical landscape to most of us; economically, they provide important products to millions of people in both subsistence and modern commercial economies. Although both of these books provide a wealth of information on palms, they differ in coverage. Field Guide to the Palms of the Americas takes a botanical approach to help readers identify palms naturally occurring in the Americas. A brief introduction and a key to the genera are followed by descriptions of 67 individual species, including identification, characteristics, habitat, and interesting notes. A separate section of 64 color plates, a distribution map for each species, checklists, and a detailed bibliography and index are also offered. Species descriptions are written by taxonomists but are reasonably comprehensible and interesting to the amateur; unfortunately, there is no glossary to explain technical terms. Palms Throughout the World, an expansion of Jones's popular Palms in Australia (1984), takes a horticultural approach. Its descriptions of 800 species in 123 genera include cultivation and propagation information as well as descriptions, and its 350 color photographs are conveniently located next to the species they illustrate. The long introductory section includes information on the structure, biology, and economic uses of palms as well as their disease and cultivation requirements. A glossary is provided. Both works would be useful in academic horticultural libraries. Field Guide to the Palms of the Americas is the only comprehensive field guide for its area, although Natalie Uhl and John Dransfield's definitive Genera Palmarum (Allen Pr., 1987) provides more detailed botanical information. A must have!

This is probably the most useful book for anyone involved in plant identification, such as Forest Engineers, specially those working in tropical America, where one often encounters many kinds of palms in the field, but until now it was not easy to identify them, and palms are mostly overlooked because they have the reputation of being difficult to identify. This book changes it all, and it's definitely a must-have.

if you're interested in neotropical palms, you ought to buy this excellent guide. all three authors are considered to be highly esteemed authorities who know their stuff very well. the description said it had approximately 380 pages, but together with all the appendices and photo pages, the total number of pages gets to 500.

The American palm compendium

Palms are a very conspicuous feature of the tropical landscape, whether in the wilds of Central and South America or in the suburban environments further north. They are also important economically (usually as fruit crops) and culturally (having uses as diverse as roofing, as material for weaving hammocks as fodder for edible beetle larvae!). Since everyone knows what a palm is, yet most non-specialists cannot get much beyond that, this guide to their identification should fill a niche.

This is a field guide to the 550 species of palm occurring naturally in the American tropics. The taxonomic treatment seems to this non-specialist to be eminently sensible and many knotty systematic probems appear to have been carefully resolved. A 40 page appendix of accepted names helps clarify what has happened to some of the older synonyms, hybrid names and such.

The authors have crammed an awful lot of new and useful information into the three-hundred and fifty odd pages. A main key permits identification to genera with further keys sprinkled throughout the body of the book. There are handy introductions to families and genera. The text is succinct and well oriented towards field identification while the 236 photographs at the back allow the user to quickly narrow down the search by visual means. Maps are provided for every species - this must have been a huge task! - and country checklists provide a further tool for homing in on the plant in question.

In resume, this is a master work which will be seen in the field for decades to come. It should be high on the list of any tropical landscape gardener, horticulturalist, anthropologist, botanist or naturalist.
