Yahweh Revealed?

Divine Encounters is essentially a rehashing of Sitchin's earlier works, but this time with a renewed focus on whether encounters with ancient gods were divine or extraterrestrial in nature. The last chapter is the most interesting, because it is here that Sitchin finally addresses the question of whether or not Yahweh is one of the Anunnaki. This is a point Sitchin has previously been silent on, despite being able to associate almost every other ancient god with the Anunnaki. Surprisingly, Sitchin concludes that Yahweh is not just one of the Anunnaki, but in fact is the god of the Anunnaki. Is Sitchin being politically correct here so as not to upset the establish religious orthodoxy of present day Judaism? After all, it is one thing for Sitchin to suggest that Judaism has its roots in the pagan (let alone extraterrestrial) beliefs and practices of ancient Mesopotamia, it is quite another to suggest that Yahweh is just an extraterrestrial from another planet! Clearly, Sitchin seems to be playing it safe by concluding that Yahweh is not only the one true god of Judaism, but also the Anunnaki, and quite possibly of other worlds in the universe. However, if one looks closely at Sitchin's own writings, the evidence to decipher the identity of Yahweh can be found - it is none other than the Anunnaki god Enki. The reasoning is too long and complex to go into here, and I will leave it to the interested reader to do their own research, and reach their own conclusions. Regardless of whether you agree with Sitchin's theories or not, his theories are compelling, and he is without doubt one of the most fascinating writers of our time.

Is doesn't matter at all whether it`s science, it still may be true...

All books by Mr. Sictchin are very good and unusual, IMHO. But this one in a way surpases them by far. I shall not go into a detailed description of the contents but the last chapters of the book have striken me with their unorthodox approach and analysis. I shall give just one example - the meaning of the Hebrew word 'olam' (world, universe): this word appears a lot in the Bible, both by itself and in two strange combinations 'le-olam' ('for ever'!? what's the connection?) and 'me-olam' ('never') - this ethymology always looked queer to me - and here comes Mr. Sitchin and makes this 'space-time' connection simple and clear.

And at the end Mr. Sicthin tries to find out who really was the God of the Bible - and arrives to a conclusion you would never expect!

Not on a par with Sitchin's earlier works

Generally an interesting book although not as illuminating as Sitchin's previous works. The entire book is tainted somewhat by Sitchin's conclusions as to the identity of Yahweh. Sitchin clearly allows his own religious beliefs to influence his conclusion in that regard. There is a complete lack of historical evidence to support Sitchin on this issue and despite his statement (p. 374) that his conclusion is "quite logical on reflection", it is in fact totally lacking in logic. Those who are truly interested in a thoughtful analysis of Yahweh's identity should direct themselves to Alan Alford's "Gods of the New Millenium".

About the Author

Andrew Tweeddale is a Chartered Arbitrator and a Solicitor-Advocate at Norton Rose. He has had extensive experience of contentious matters in the construction and engineering industry and has been involved with multi-million pound arbitrations. In 1992 Andrew was called to the Bar and thereafter practised at Eldon Chambers in London. In 1995 he moved to niche construction law firm Corbett & Co where he was involved in numerous ICC arbitrations and worked extensively with the FIDIC forms of contract. In 1999 Andrew joined the Construction and Engineering Group of leading city solicitors Norton Rose and has been involved with both domestic and international arbitrations. He has written numerous articles on arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.
Keren Tweeddale was called to the bar in 1990 and practised at the bar for several years before becoming a lecturer specialising in arbitration law. Keren gives seminars on arbitration law to law firms, various businesses, corporations and universities. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

About the Author

Serope Kalpakjian is a professor emeritus of mechanical and materials engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He is the author of Mechanical Processing of Materials (Van Nostrand, 1967) and co-author of Lubricants and Lubrication in Metalworking Operations (with E.S. Nachtman, Dekker, 1985). Both of the first editions of his books Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials (Addison-Wesley, 1984) and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology (Addison-Wesley, 1989) have received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award of SME. He has conducted research in several areas in manufacturing processes; is the author of numerous technical papers and articles in professional journals, handbooks, and encyclopedias; and has edited several conference proceedings. He also has been editor and co-editor of various technical journals and has served on the editorial board of Encyclopedia Americana.

Professor Kalpakjian has received the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation Best Paper Award (1966), the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Illinois Institute of Technology (1970), the ASME Centennial Medallion (1980), the SME International Education Award (1989), a Person of the Millennium Award from IIT (1999), and the Albert Easton White Outstanding Teacher Award from ASM International (2000); the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award for 2002 was named after him. Professor Kalpakjian is a life fellow of ASME, fellow of SME, fellow and life member of ASM International, fellow emeritus of The International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), and a past president and founding member of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution/SME. He is a high honors graduate of Robert College (Istanbul), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Steven R. Schmid is an associate professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and conducts research in the general areas of manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (with Honors) and master’s and Ph.D. degrees, both in mechanical engineering, from Northwestern University. He has received numerous awards, including the John T. Parsons Award from SME (2000), the Newkirk Award from ASME (2000), the Kaneb Center Teaching Award (2000 and 2003), and the Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Excellence in Teaching (2005). He is also the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREERS Award (1996) and an ALCOA Foundation Award (1994).

Professor Schmid is the author of over 100 technical papers, has co-authored Fundamentals of Machine Elements (McGraw-Hill), Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication (Dekker), Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials (Prentice Hall), and has contributed two chapters to the CRC Handbook of Modern Tribology. He is a registered professional engineer, a certified manufacturing engineer of SME, a member of the North American Research Institution, and a fellow of the ASME. In 2012, he was named an ASME Foundation Swanson Fellow and served as Assistant Director for Research Partnerships at the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, National Institute for Science and Technology.

Classic Manufacturing Technology Working Book [1989 ed]

This is one of 2 books that captures the essence of a manufacturing management (or industrial engineering) engineering undergraduate degree- the other being an operations management text from Ray Wild, Nigel Slack, or Laurie Mullins. To help get an idea of what being a manufacturing engineer involves, prospective students should envision a dose of intense team & individual industry-based change projects, and striving globally competitive companies to add "seasoning" to these books. The broad `technology' contents are useful for industry veterans, consultants, and undergraduate students alike, as well as being a good starting point for researchers.

Very good manufacturing text

I've taught a quarter-long Manufacturing Processes course out of this text (and its predecessor) for four years, and plan to continue using it. This text presents a great overview of a wide variety of processes, which is exactly what I'm trying to achieve. It also goes into reasonable depth with many processes. I do not attempt to cover the entire text in one quarter, however -- I use roughly half.

When asked on end-of-term evaluations whether they agreed with the statement, "The textbook was valuable in my learning experience," students consistently rated this text 4.1/5.0. The average score campus-wide for textbooks is 3.6/5.0. Anecdotally, the handful of students who actually bother reading the text come up to me and say, "It really is interesting and easy to read."

Yes, there are some errors which have been frustratingly carried over from the 5th edition, but you catch many of them with a first reading. These errors knock it down from 5- to 4-stars, but I'm still really happy with the text.

A poor choice in a textbook

This book is not worth the money it costs. It hasn't been proofread from its last edition very well, still referring to old diagrams that aren't renumbered in their proper order. Also, most of the questions it asks for homework actually require that students get the answers online because they don't even address them in the book. Also, there are typos on several equations they report in the book. This can give the students confusion on which equation is actually correct and provides inconsistences in the math the authors exhibit in their examples. Upon looking at some solutions in the solutions manual, it expects students to somehow know they are not incorporating friction when the book doesn't even specify to do so. Overall, it does not seem that this book was well thought out. It seems that it was just put out quick in order to have a new edition from which to make money. I would not recommend this as a textbook for any class.

Excellent History of the Fall of South Vietnam

I have read a number of books about the fall of South Vietnam, and was very pleased to find that this is the best account of the collapse of South Vietnam. It covers the points of view of all sides in the conflict. Not only does it cogently argue the reasons for the collapse of the South Vietnamese military and government, but gives one a good feeling for the experiences of those who participated in those events. The book is highly readable, and I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in this period of history.

Excellent book explaning how the VN War has ended the way it did ...

I have read the Vietnamese version of this book, and am now re-reading the English version. Overall, I think it is a good book, with very good and sharp arguments as to why the US has failed in Vietnam. The author has judiciously and cautiously weighed in the points he is trying to make, so as not to sound one-sided and fanatical. Fighting and loosing a war, especially in the case of South Vietnam, is a very emotional thing. If any lessons are to be learnt from that experience, we have to have the courage to do so, in a way that future generations will not have to make those same mistakes again.

Amazed by good reviews of this book

I am continually amazed by the good reviews this book receives; so I finally felt compelled to write. There is nothing in this book that Warren Buffett hasn't already said in his annual letters. Robert Hagstrom revealed his true reason for writing this book when the first paperback edition came out and in it, in fine print, was a notice stating that Hagstrom had started an investment fund designed to invest using Warren Buffett's principles (read: way). That is, he wrote the book so you would learn his name, become confident in his ability to analyze investments like Buffett does, and invest in his fund (which has a hefty expense ratio and has performed quite poorly I understand). So he writes this page book, in which he recommends that if you ever have the chance to read Buffett's annual letters, you should, since they "read like a book on his investment philosophy". I took his suggestion, ordered the back annual letters (sold by Berkshire Hathaway for $15) and found they repeated everything in this book - sometimes word for word (now how could Buffett have known what Hagstrom was going to write?). I get the feeling that Hagstrom has never met Buffett and never discussed investing with him (unlike Lowenstein, Lowe, Train, etc.) and his only research for this book was Buffett's annual letters. I learned more about Buffett's style from Roger Lowenstein's biography. Take Robert Hagstrom's advice and purchase the annual letters; they say the same thing - except Buffett's sense of humor is better.

A tedious read with very little practical application

First let me say that the low rating I'm giving does not reflect my opinion of Warren Buffett and his methods in general, but rather specifically this book by Hagstrom.
I was quite disappointed by this book. It seems confused about whether it is an investment guide or historical narrative, and so fails to do an adequate job of either. (For a much more interesting account of Buffett's life and investments, read Roger Lowenstein's biography).
I was hoping this book would explain in specific detail HOW Buffett determines whether a company's shares are undervalued by the market and by how much. However I found that the few explanations in this book are too vague to be of any real practical application in analyzing companies and making investment decisions. The book spends more time detailing WHAT Buffett has invested in, as opposed to WHY. And more time discussing what happened to these companies AFTER Buffett had invested in them, rather than what specifically made them attractive to Buffett beforehand.
Maybe this would be a good enough book for someone to read as an introduction to Buffett, if it wasn't just so boring!

Great Philosophy, Good Read, Average Practical Use

The "Warren Buffet Way" never ventures too far from common sense but whether that makes it ingeniously sound or blandly uninspired will be left for the reader to decide. The techniques Warren Buffet employed to attain success (and wealth) are well documented here with summaries of his investments from early life to recent times (1994). Each investment in analyzed through the lense of Warren Buffets economic principles, a blend of widely recognized economic minds and Warren Buffets own basic philosophy, and the result is an appreciation for his business sense and stock selecting ability.
This hindsight review of his choices is partially intended to teach you, the reader, how to make equally good investments and turn a profit without extensive risk. The problem lies in the fact that Buffet's confident simplicity is hard to obtain. The crux of his theory is calculating the intrinsic value of a company through research that is probably second nature to long-time professional investors like Buffet but is vague or downplayed in the book. Technological methods and industry readings are turned down in favor of a physical appraisal of the company and its management and an unexplained calculation of its potential.
But who has the time or money to visit and interview every possible investment they are considering? And to do so when they are only just starting out with little idea of where to start or what is an important indicator of value and while being told to expect only long-term gains? The book tells you to look past the popular and fickle market at the company itself but it is unclear what to focus on. The idea is good, I'll try to put it to good use in my own investing, but its too general to nail down or check off on a list.
Overall though, it will provide an insightful look at one of the richest men in the world. You'll learn some basic investment strategies and a little history. Its not an economic Bible but it may help beat the crowd without going too far over your head.

Samuel's account of the voyage to Virginia, political intrigues among the settlers, and the harrowing first winter of the James Town settlement brings to life figures like Smith, Powhatan, and Pocahontas. Details about food and daily life add realism to the story, and quotes from historical sources begin each chapter. This Samuel is more conflicted than the one in Gail Langer Karwoski's Surviving Jamestown: The Adventures of Young Sam Collier (Peachtree, 2001). His initial selfishness changes as he responds to the reverend, to Smith, and to his new friends. His time in an Indian village and his changing perspectives on the Natives add interest to the story and depth to his character. While the opening chapters move slowly, the pace picks up as Samuel reaches Virginia. This title is a good choice for a tie-in with the 400th anniversary celebrations of Jamestown in 2007.–Beth L. Gr. 5-8. Following Stealing Freedom (1998) and Storm Warriors (2001), both set in the nineteenth century, Carbone dips further back in U.S. history to the founding of James Town. Young orphan Samuel Collier narrates from his viewpoint as Captain John Smith's page, and the gripping historical fiction reflects Carbone's heavy reliance on primary source material, which she cites in an appendix. The dense particulars of daily life may tire readers who demand high-action plots. Others, though, will be easily caught up in the meticulously drawn scenes, from the fetid ship's hold to the snowy forests where Samuel learns to hunt with Powhatan friends. The cover, showing two crouched Powhatan Indians surveying the settlement, is a puzzling choice, particularly since the British characters are the focus. Still, like Joseph Bruchac's Pocahontas (2003), the text offers a view of Indian life that is far from the Disney stereotypes. An author's note offers more historical contest. A strong, visceral story of the hardship and peril settlers faced, as well as the brutal realities of colonial conquest. Gillian Engberg

I loved this book!

Samuel is on the streets, looking in the garbage for food. Then he goes on a ship with Richard, John Smith, Reverend Hunt, James, and a lot of gentlemen. The Susan Constant is a terrible place to be, but he knows he will make it to Virginia. The trip from England to Virginia is long, and many on the ship are sick. Will Samuel make it to Virginia? You'll have to read the book to find out. I recommend Blood on the River to ages 8+. I am 9, and I found it scary, fun, and exiting all at the same time. Happy Readings!

Great portrayal of Jamestown

A MIDDLE SCHOOL READER WROTE THIS REVIEW.

Blood on the River is the story of Samuel Collier.
Originally Samuel was a street rat fighting for his life, but one night he is caught stealing a locket from a pawn shop that originally belonged to his mother (who is dead). The shop owner sent him to an orphanage who's owner is a man by the name of Reverend Hunt, where he meets many other boys and gets in fights with them. When Reverend Hunt decides to go to Jamestown he decides to take Samuel and another boy named Richard, who don't get along to well. Samuel is apprenticed to Captain John Smith. This is the story of how he survives in this new land and how John Smith and Reverend Hunt turn him into a man.
I highly recommend this book. I enjoyed reading it A LOT.

Interesting blend of history and fiction.

My granddaughter had to read this book over the summer as preparation for entering 5th grade in September. I bought 2 copies of the book so we could read it out loud together. I normally don't like history and fiction mixed together but this book is different. Every chapter begins with a direct quote from the actual daily journals of the characters in the story. These very specific historical events are then woven in that chapter into quite an adventure that brings history to life. It is particularly fun as the events are retold through the eyes of a pretty tough street kid who works aboard the ship and comes to learn about life, courage, and friendship as he grows into young manhood. My granddaughter loves it--especially the parts about the fistfights and the slop buckets! I love the accurate geographical precision of the story as well as the depiction of the Native Americans whom the settlers encounter in the New World.
