Now Virginia Tech history professor Ekirch (Day's Close) presents the intriguing, complex true narrative of the 18th-century travails of the rightful earl of Anglesea. Ekirch describes young Annesley's near abandonment to the Dublin streets through the greed-induced maneuvering of his father, Baron Altham, and Altham's mistress. Upon Altham's death, Jemmy's Uncle Richard perpetuated the lie that the boy was illegitimate and, later, that he had died. In 1728 Richard had 12-year-old Jemmy kidnapped and transported to the colony of Delaware as an indentured servant. After 13 years of virtual slavery, Jemmy escaped and returned to the British Isles. His claim to gentlemanly birth was endorsed by numerous former acquaintances, but denied by a few key individuals. Eventually, his cause was championed by Daniel Mackercher, a self-made Scottish merchant who dedicated his life to the defense of Jemmy's birthright. Lengthy and sensational legal proceedings resulted in a less-than-timely vindication of the claim. *Starred Review* Ekirch, a history professor at Virginia Tech University, reanimates a crime dating back to the early eighteenth century, the crime that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped. James Annesley, the heir to five aristocratic titles, had a startlingly hard early existence. His father, Arthur Annesley, the fourth Baron Altham, turned James (called Jemmy) into the streets of Dublin to fend for himself at the age of eight. Jemmy turned up at his father’s funeral four years later. Shortly after, his uncle had him kidnapped and shipped to Delaware, where he spent the next 13 years living as an indentured servant. The term kidnapping, Ekirch explains, originated in the seventeenth century to describe seizing a child with the intent of transporting him or her to the colonies to work as an indentured servant. Kidnapping was a misdemeanor under British common law; horse theft was a felony punishable by death. Jemmy’s escape, passage to London, and pursuit of his birthright, leading eventually to his vindication at the end of a famous criminal trial, form the backbone of this story. Annesley had to prove his identity with virtually no evidence: he had no scars or distinguishing birthmarks; written records of his birth were nonexistent; and the science of fingerprints, photographs, and DNA was far in the future. Ekirch also illuminates such subjects as the position of wives and mistresses in eighteenth-century England; the causes of the sharp rise in mortality that threatened the great peerages; and the realities of indentured servitude in the colonies. Fascinating true story of kidnapping, greed, and corruption among the British aristocracy

Ekirch's book tells the true story which inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write his classic book KIDNAPPED. Truth, as often, is wilder than fiction. The heir to a title and fortune, neglected by his drunken father and vicious stepmother, is turned out to live on the streets and then kidnapped and sold, basically, into slavery. I didn't know that the indentured servants that came to America when it was still "the colonies" were often sent against their will, and in effect owned by whoever bought them on the block. Any bad behavior added to their sentence, so they were in effect sold for far longer than the seven-year term. It took Jemmy Annesley something like twenty years to gain his freedom and return to Britain to claim his title and inheritance.
The law cases that ensued, the corruption of the courts and the British rule of Ireland, take your breath away. Ekirch does a brilliant job of probing the seamy lives of dissolute noblemen, and making you feel the appalling injustice of the times. What happened to Annesley was, to some degree, normal--it was a scandal only because it involved the aristocracy. The true scandal is the corruption of the legal system and the rottenness of the society that created it--which is also the society that gave birth to the United States.
The story of this one mistreated, orphaned, abused boy, who became a man determined to reclaim what was his, becomes a gripping insight into all of 18th-century Anglo-Irish society, top to bottom. It's a terrific book. I couldn't put it down.

The Ultimate Cold Case!

Ekirch's account of family lineage gone wrong is the ultimate investigation into crimes of another era. He approaches the subject matter with careful objectiveness - and the reader quickly realizes why - as just about everyone is carrying around some serious moral baggage! It's easy to root against Uncle Richard, but harder to fully embrace Jemmy as a hero worthy of our deepest sympathies. Sure enough, the outcome doesn't disappoint. I won't spoil it, but no one (except maybe the lawyers) rides into the sunset unscathed. Indeed, truth is stranger than fiction. This stuff is far more compelling than the glitzy, empty calorie crime dramas of today.

Aside from simply being a first class yarn, perhaps the most compelling reason to read Birthright is to appreciate how a top historian carefully untangles the events of the distant past. Ekirch succeeds in weaving a compelling mosaic of lives lived and events transpired almost 300 years ago. It's nothing short of amazing. Museums house the artifacts of the times, but a great historian's work is the only true portal into the collective ethos of these bygone societies. From the intricacies of the English legal system, to the weather patterns (he clearly visited all these locations!), to the time it took for a speedy horseman to convey news from Dublin to London (5 days), Ekirch has compiled an incredible piece of research and understanding. Bravo!

It is of such historical significance it must be told and retold to inspire us all
during these times of war,disasters, and famine. I loved the lesson learned about the
importance of hope and perseverance.

It's one of the few books that's changed my life.

A magnificent introduction to an aesthetic sensibility I was always aware of, and appreciated, but didn't imagine had a name. Thanks to this small but finely-honed book I now understand the intellectual underpinnings of a profound way of looking at the world. Wabi-sabi--the name of this beauty/mindset--is the perfect antidote to my frenetic, digital life. I've given this book as a gift to friends and have received many heartfelt thanks.

This exquisite little volume is food for the soul. It should be required reading for our species. It is a subtle wake-up call...which we need to take to heart...we need to re-evaluate what we produce. We need to re-evaluate the legacy we leave. This book illustrates the respect we should have for nature. It illustrates the inspiration we should find in nature.
We have become a society producing perishable goods, much of which has little or no merit. Mr. Koren opens our eyes to the merit of producing goods which earn dignity with age, use and wear. It is truly an aesthetic for our time.

Please Buy This If You're A Perfectionist.

A solid reminder that exactly what you're trying to create--in whatever manner--will not be complete until something about that process or result is imperfect. And that the true beauty is not only in that imperfection, but your acceptance of it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who, like me, is a rigid Type A with difficulty acknowledging (let alone accepting!) that the standard Earth day is 24 hours instead of 62 and sometimes failures are our greatest successes. While not directly instructing you on the specific creation of imperfections within your own work, this book will make you uncomfortable in the most gently reassuring way while you look for the reasons for those flaws and examine the moments of personal growth they allow you and whoever may view or experience what you make secondhand.

Great educational tool for interpreters

This is a fabulous resource for educational interpreters working with students that use or are learning other languages other than English, including ASL. It is also a wonderful resource for sign language interpreters enabling us to see the picture of the object to give us ideas as to which classifiers to use in the interpretation as well as how to set it up as we prepare for the classroom. It is also very helpful in the tutoring environment as a picture is worth a thousand words. It is very detailed in its drawings. I spent a long time comparing different resources like this one and kept narrowing it down to this one. I am very thankful I finally purchased this book as I am pleased with it. It meets my expectations.

This book kicks arse. You can browse it as well as look stuff up in it. If you just want the picture to help explain stuff it is great. For example, there are loads of shirt collars documented in this book and I find that useless but love the fact that I now have a 5 lnguage reference for them. In case I need to buy a certain type of blouse collar in spanish. Or whatever.

Washington Duke is very young when he first realizes there is racial discrimination in the South. Living outside of Hillsboro, North Carolina, in the mid-1820s, he is one of ten children in a family that shares the wilderness with bears, rattlesnakes, and mountain lions. Washington learns about the world around him from his scholarly father, nurtures a compassion for others, and eventually grows into a man deeply troubled by the institution of slavery. As Washington ages, his sons eventually capture his dream to establish Duke University. Even with the family's successes, though, there is tragedy and heartache; Washington's granddaughter, Doris, dies under suspicious circumstances in 1993 and her estate becomes embroiled in a legal battle. Based on a true story, this compelling and inspirational tale examines the life of a gentle giant and his descendants who together built a multibillion-dollar empire, numerous charitable foundations, and a renowned academic institution, proving that anyone can overcome adversity to achieve greatness.

About the Author
D. W. Duke is a California attorney and a Duke family historian and genealogist. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctor from Washington University School of Law. He holds a fourth-degree black belt conferred by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation in Seoul Korea. He is the author of five books and dozens of articles, mostly concerning the law.

I loved this book!

It had lots of interesting information about the Duke family, of which I am a descendant. My Great Grandmother was a Duke--the ones who moved to Tennessee. She and her husband came to our house and stayed overnight occasionally when I was a child. This author did extensive research to put all of this together and made it really interesting. I was surprised that our ancestors were a part of the Underground Railroad. I appreciate that this book was written, for it made me aware of our history--things I had never heard before. I enjoyed learning what things were like for people in "those days". I had always heard of Doris Duke, but knew nothing about her life and death. Her story was a real-life novel in itself! I thank the author for taking the time and having the interest to do so much research and compile the information into a book for all of us to enjoy. My children are all planning to read it.

Awesome, detailed, colorful, accurate read of the Duke family legacy!

I just finished reading this awesome book! Washington Duke started the Duke legacy, and my ancestory comes from his dad's brother's line that settled in Cannon County, TN. Since I spent time there every summer & throughout the year, many details felt familiar & brought back memories long forgotten. It was a close knit clan devoted to faith, family & charity - they were also a hard working, industrious family. Big on rights & freedom for all people, I learned that my direct ancestors were part of the underground railroad, risking their lives to free many slaves, right in Cannon County. I am grateful for the memories & stories that were passed along, and for the passion & time that D Dw Duke​ put into gathering all the stories & details & putting them into an interesting & enjoyable read! It made a lot of history make sense! You will especially enjoy this if you are a Duke!

Memior of a Duke Cousin.

There are many Duke cousins. All are related but not directly like the Washington Duke cousins. This book has clear print and is easily read. The
flamboyant "tell all" books lack the sincerity and truth of this carefully written book. I enjoyed this book and those cousins who passed it along
had since words of praise, too.

Tom Boellstorff is professor of anthropology and Bill Maurer is dean of social sciences and professor of anthropology and law, both at the University of California, Irvine, where Nick Seaver is a PhD candidate in anthropology. Genevieve Bell is an anthropologist and director of the User Experience Research group at Intel Labs, where Melissa Gregg is principal engineer.
