The KISS Approach to Business Plans
By walter abbott
After wading through the business plan templates on line & the books on the library shelves, I found that it was nice to read a logical, concise & creative book on writing a SUCCESSFUL business plan. All of the templates & books help you create a business plan, but the key is how it helps YOU be successful. Often the sole purpose of a business plan is to get a loan. However, Mr. Shelton correctly emphasizes that the plan is critical for any small business, it keeps YOU focused, challenged & centered. Thanks for making it worthy of the KISS label, Keep It Successful Stupid.

A practical, straightforward, easy-to-use guide to business planning.
By Michael Mendez
“The Secrets to Writing a Successful Business Plan" is a must have for any entrepreneur who is launching a new business or moving a business from the start-up phase to that of an ongoing concern. It provides a straightforward, easy-to-understand approach to business planning. The book’s practical insights reflect Mr. Shelton’s extensive experience as a businessman, mentor, investor and as a small business leader. It is choc-full of real life, relevant case studies, as well as, helpful exercises. Mr. Shelton nicely balances the case for a disciplined and consistent approach to planning with the need for an individual message that reflects the owner’s unique vision for the business. Two chapters, “Make No Mistake” and “Forget Me Not”, are essential final checklists before hitting the “send” button and/or the “print” key.

A great business writer said “The value of the business plan is in the creation; the value of business planning is in the execution.” Even if an entrepreneur has his/her financing already secured, engaging in the planning process is a critical element for success. This book guides one through this difficult process in a thoughtful, very helpful way.

This book is also an excellent reference for small business mentors, consultants and educators.

I Always Loved You: A Novel, by Robin Oliveira

A story of Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas, from the New York Times bestselling author of  My Name Is Mary Sutter

The young Mary Cassatt never thought moving to Paris after the Civil War to be an artist was going to be easy, but when, after a decade of work, her submission to the Paris Salon is rejected, Mary’s fierce determination wavers. Her father is begging her to return to Philadelphia to find a husband before it is too late, her sister Lydia is falling mysteriously ill, and worse, Mary is beginning to doubt herself. Then one evening a friend introduces her to Edgar Degas and her life changes forever. Years later she will learn that he had begged for the introduction, but in that moment their meeting seems a miracle. So begins the defining period of her life and the most tempestuous of relationships.

In I Always Loved You, Robin Oliveira brilliantly re-creates the irresistible world of Belle Époque Paris, writing with grace and uncommon insight into the passion and foibles of the human heart.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Oliveira follows her best-selling historical fiction debut, My Name Is Mary Sutter (2010), with a novel based on the life of the “formidable” American painter Mary Cassatt. Cassatt insists on living in Paris among the impressionists, so her concerned parents and loving sister join her there and are soon baffled by Cassatt’s tempestuous interactions with her mercurial mentor, Edgar Degas. The true nature of their relationship remains open to interpretation, an opportunity Oliveira seizes with passionate and electrifying empathy for both artists. As she vividly renders 1870s Paris and its gossipy enclave of radical artists, including the painfully entangled Berthe Morisot and Édouard Manet (who is suffering horribly from syphilis), Oliveira contrasts irascible Degas and his freedom to go anywhere his omnivorous eye leads him (even as his eyesight fails) and steely Cassatt, who as a woman is forced to find inspiration in domesticity, painting incisive portraits of mothers and children as she forgoes marriage and motherhood. Emulating the powers of observation and expression possessed by the artists she so vividly and sensitively fictionalizes, Oliveira illuminates with piercing insight the churning psyches of her living-on-the-edge characters. This is a historically and aesthetically rich, complexly involving, and forthrightly sorrowful novel of the perilous, exhilarating, and world-changing lives of visionary artists breaking new ground and each other’s hearts. --Donna Seaman

One of my favorites of 2014
By Historical Fiction Notebook
It's a testament to the power of this story and the conviction of Robin Oliveira's writing that I'm able to look back and review this book almost six months after reading it. Oliveira's first novel - My Name is Mary Sutter - is on my list of all-time favorite historical novels so when I saw that her follow-up book looked at one of my favorite times and places in history (the Belle Epoque Paris of the Impressionists), I was beyond excited.

I've been disappointed by a lot of historical novels lately - they either seemed to lack ambition or would have been better served by a focused editor's eye. I Always Loved You is the exact opposite - a considered work of art in its own right that looks at the twisted demands of art, family and love and that brings late 19th century Paris to life.

The novel is beautiful in its simplicity - a short opening chapter that introduces the reader to an older Mary Cassatt then moves seamlessly into two stories based on the real lives of the small, interwoven group of men and women who would become known as the Impressionists. The main story focuses on the artistic and emotional development of Mary Cassatt, one of the few female painters in the group. In a richly detailed third-person narrative, we're brought close in to the daily frustrations of an artist at a critical juncture in her working life, that time when a painter or a writer or a musician knows enough to know that they have so much more to learn. At this moment, she meets Edgar Degas and begins an acquaintance that shifts and grows and fractures with time, defying categorization but always influencing her artistic development in unexpected ways. A secondary plot, exploring the love triangle between Manet and his sister-in-law Berthe Moirsot throws Mary and Edgar's relationship into relief, providing perspective and a deep thread of melancholy through the story.

Some historical fiction readers may find the gradual development of personalities and relationships too slow and lacking in the more dramatic narrative twists and turns that mark the genre - I found the difference refreshing. Despite my excitement, I found myself reading this one slowly and that it took time for me to develop an appreciation for the unusual rhythms of the story generated by the short (4-6 page) chapters.

I rarely buy books after checking them out of the library or receiving e-galley copies. But there are some cases when I want to support the author and in some small way thank them for working for years to craft a story that has brought me so much joy. I'm looking forward to returning to I Always Loved You again and again as the years go by.

A different kind of love story.
By bettysunflower
This is the story of Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas during a time of great changes in the art world of Paris. Mary had moved to Paris from America to pursue a career as an artist to learn for the locals. It was there that she met Edgar who offered to help her show her work. They seemed to have an a rather unusual relationship but fairly understandable for the time period. It is pretty obvious that they loved each other. However, they never seemed to be able to give each other what was needed.
The strength of this book is the author's incorporation of the growth of certain styles of art and how they developed and the people who developed them. The characters and their interactions in relation to each other and to their art is fascinating. It also shows us how the artists seem to have to suffer in order to produce superior art. I felt the book was very well written and easy for someone with limited art history knowledge to understand and to enjoy.

Real World: Paris, 19th Century Artist Edition
By My Dog-Eared Purpose
Provided free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Finish time: 9 nights. After my last book, I was hoping for a bit of an easier read, but somehow I ended up on this one that took me almost as long. And centered around art again too. Hmmm. Not a bad thing, just kind of funny. I had a love, hate relationship with this book, but after thinking about it the last day, I did like it, and it’s prompted me to want to learn more on a topic 10 days ago I had no interest in. So I’d take that as a sign of a good book.

Having no background in art history, I could recognize some of the names, but I had no idea much more about them. And this is a random comparison, but what kept popping into my head after I finished on how to describe this book is: Real World: Paris, 19th Century Or the Impressionists. And the people all happened to be artists. Renoir, Manet, Monet, Cassatt, Degas, Morisot, Pissaro (and many more). Some names familiar to me, others not, but in my brief Wikipedia research, they all were real (and quite the motley crew), as were the other characters in the book. I guess it was also a “before they were famous” story too. A bunch of starving artists spending their days dreaming, painting, partying, trying to make a buck, and preparing for the next exhibition.

The main character in the book was Mary Cassatt, an American painter, invited to join the group, and her struggle to fit in among the Paris natives, and make a name for herself in the Paris art scene. Her relationship throughout the book with Degas is a fun, yet very frustrating one. Her family comes to join her in Paris too and even in the 1800′s, her struggles with them were so easy to relate to. I especially enjoyed her relationship with her sister Lydia (again who I confirmed was real.)

Fun facts were thrown in all over the place, like her friend Abigail Alcott, whose more famous sister is Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women. At some points, I felt a map of Paris would have been helpful as they discussed a lot of landmarks, not a bad thing, and not that I know Paris, but would have been fun to see in the book. But overall the book was just packed with great stories, complex and compelling relationships, and a ton of history.

As you can guess from the title, a love story too, but what’s fun is that it actually could be a few love stories. A lot of plot lines are intertwined, and I was confused at some points, but as I said when I started, the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Look out for it in just a few weeks. This is the perfect historical fiction.

I also found after the fact if you go to the author's website you can find a chapter by chapter list of all the artwork referenced, which is a really cool guide and I would have loved to have handy while reading!

Great Book!!!
By J. Lee
If you're new to Muay Thai, or just want to refine your skills, then this is a great book. It has a good amount of drills and combos that are clearly described. This book is a great supplement to your Muay Thai training, and if you go through each drill in the book, I have no doubt you will have better form and technique. Although in black and white, the photos are great and illustrate exactly what your form needs to look like for each combination.

An excellent training manual for anyone interested in Muay Thai.
By Joseph J. Truncale
I have had a lifelong passion for the martial arts. In my more than 50 years of study I have been fortunate to have trained with some of the very best instructors in the world. I have been a student and instructor of numerous combat systems (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Boxing, Wrestling, Kick boxing, Combatives, Police Defensive Tactics and numerous weapons).

I am always seeking to increase my martial arts knowledge and recently purchased this volume (Explosive Muay Thai: Beyond the basics by Jerry Heines with Kru Amorndet Ranjanthuek) on Thai Kickboxing. I have always considered Muay Thai as one of the best and most effective fighting arts in the world. I have also read and reviewed numerous previous volumes on this topic. This 165 page volume is one of the best books I have read lately on the fighting art of Muay Thai.

This 81/2 by 11 text is organized into 5 detailed chapters. The first chapter explains how to use this book for best results. The second chapter provides a brief overview of the Muay Thai philosophy. The third chapter deals with the warrior’s mind which covers the Zen philosophy and Muay Thai and other topics of interest. Chapter four shows how to practice Muay Thai “Shadow Sparring.” This chapter also shows Muay Thai basic punches, strikes and kicks. The final chapter (5) gives detailed information on “Free Sparring” advice. Do not pass up the Appendix sections because it has numerous safety tips, useful Thai expressions, suggestions for a better life and other information. Using this book along with actual hands-on training with a Muay Thai instructor will produce good results.

If you are seeking some solid information on Muay Thai you should check out this book.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute)

The concepts and methods in this book have immediate appeal ...
By Mark J. Schlueter
The concepts and methods in this book have immediate appeal and value to B2B sales reps and marketing professionals. It is an approach to selling that represents the high degree of professionalism and the kind of buyer-seller relationship to which professional B2B sales people aspire.

B2B buyers have changed. Buyers today want to know exactly how you can help them solve their particular challenges and the bottom-line impact you can deliver.

This book reveals how sales and marketing can help buyers abandon the status quo and take action to change and invest in your recommendations to achieve and realize more value.

It's the responsibility of the sales rep and marketing, not the customer, to create the perception of value necessary to advance the sale. If you wait for your customer to do it – the deal likely stalls. If you allow your competitors to drive the value conversation – they will frame the value to their advantage and your detriment.

But sales success today is not exclusively about quantification and logic. Persuasive business cases that move others to action include a combination of logic, emotion, and credibility. Aristotle long ago described these as Logos, Pathos and Ethos. The timeliness genius of Aristotle combined with modern neuroscience are effective guides to persuade and move frugal B2B buyers to action.

This book provides a roadmap to effectively refine your sales approach and navigate your content marketing plans to not only survive – but thrive – in this new environment.

A must-read for B2B sales and marketing leaders
By Rachel Sparacio-Foster
Today’s B2B customers are bombarded with bad content and sales pitches. They’re tired of hearing about how great you think you are. Instead, they want hard proof that your products or services will deliver the results that they need.

Tom Pisello’s new book shows you how to make your messages stand out, so you can engage today’s skeptical buyers and convert more prospects into customers. It explains how to ditch your boring PowerPoint presentations in favor of content and tools that deliver real value.

One of the most interesting parts of book is the chapter on how Aristotle's art of persuasion works with today's neuroscience of decision making. When you combine the two, you can get more buyers to say “yes” to your products or services.

I’d recommend this book to any B2B marketing or sales leader who needs to shorten sales cycles and stand out from the competition.

Excellent resource on Business Aviation
By Thomas Prevost Jr.
John Sheehan has hit another home run with the second edition of Business and Corporate Aviation Management. This book is a must read for anyone having responsibility for the Corporate Aviation function or aspiring to a leadership position within the Corporate Aviation function. After 25 years of running a corporate flight department for a Fortune 125 company I can attest to the fact that what is outlined in John's book is a proven strategy for how to do it the right way. In Chapter 8 (Safety) John includes an excellent case for why to have a Flight Attendant on a cabin class airplane. Boy, if I have a dollar for every time I was asked to cut out our Flight Attendant for budget reasons. John's rationale for having a Flight Attendant onboard hits the nail on the head and has always worked for me as the counter argument for why we should seek cutting expenses elsewhere. This book is a great resource that you will go back to time and time again. I know I will.

A Welcome Update
By T. James Buchanan
Sheehan's Business and Corporate Aviation Management is both a primer and advanced text on managing a corporate aviation department. It is recommended for new and experienced business aviators, and those responsible for administering the organization. His work goes beyond the technical aspects of aviation; it also covers the business aspects of managing an aviation department including leadership, human resources, finance and customer relationship management. The common thread throughout all is safety - my read found the topic of safety in every chapter.

As a Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) I have used Sheehan's first edition as a reliable resource. The second edition is a welcome update of the principles he laid out a decade ago.

Excellent Second Edition
By Jim Cannon
Review of Business and Corporate Aviation Management

Business and Corporate Aviation Management is a solid reference for aspiring aviation managers and corporate executives alike. This second edition has been published in a more readable format, text size as well as chapter referencing. The author has updated essential information focused on the principles of business aviation management. This reviewer especially enjoyed Chapter 8, Safety. Emphasis on the principals and essential elements of SMS are clearly outlined and easily understood.

Current business aviation managers will find Business and Corporate Aviation Management to be a well-constructed reinforcement of industry best practices and management principles. For the corporate executive seeking validation of the need for professional management of their aviation assets, the book provides a building block approach outlining the business case for the integration of a corporate aviation flight department.

Every aspect of this 2nd edition is an enhancement of the 1st, published in 2003 and generally considered to be the "bible" of business aviation management. This reviewer highly recommends Business and Corporate Aviation Management, Second Edition as an addition to any aviation library.

J. Paul Hunter is Barbara E. and Richard J. Franke Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago. He is the author of The Reluctant Pilgrim: Defoe’s Emblematic Method and Quest for Form in Robinson Crusoe; Occasional Form: Henry Fielding and the Chains of Circumstance; and Before Novels: The Cultural Contexts of Eighteenth-Century English Fiction. He is author of the first nine editions of The Norton Introduction to Poetry and the long-time co-editor of The Norton Introduction to Literature and New Worlds of Literature.

Kelly J. Mays has taught writing and literature courses for 25 years ― at Stanford University (where she earned her Ph.D.), in the Harvard Expository Writing Program, at New Mexico State University, and (since 2001) at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, where she is now an Associate Professor of English.  A British literature specialist whose work has appeared in Victorian Studies, Victorian Poetry, Critical Inquiry, and other major scholarly journals, she is currently at work on a book exploring when and why nineteenth-century Britons began to label their age, their literature, and even themselves "Victorian."

Wonderful!
By Chelsea
I bought this book as a text for my "Introduction to Poetry" class this semester. Being a poetry nerd, I expected that I would enjoy the class, but I am even more head-over-heels than I would have expected!! This book is wonderfully laid out and includes hundreds of treasured poems. I especially like the organization; rather than having the poetry in chronological order, the editor put the poems in chapters according to different aspects of poetry (i.e. tone, speaker, meter, etc.), which may put everything from Anne Bradstreet to Sylvia Plath in a single chapter.

I'm in love. I read this book on my days off, simply for the joy of reading wonderful poetry. Whether you choose to buy this as a textbook or simply to read for fun, this is an anthology you can't pass up. I hope to use this in my future teaching career.

Excellent survey of artists and forms
By A Customer
This is a nice way to settle back in with poetry if you have been away from it for a while. Hunter gives us a collection of outstanding writings from the western tradition. There is enough about form and structure to add to our appreciation of the artists' work without distracting from the meaning and emotion.
There are a few chapters at the end that are very "textbookish" but they are brief and do not invade too much on the worth of the volume as a collection for people who do not plan to write "about poetry".

Poetry from every angle: great selections, great commentary
By A Customer
When a friend gave me the Third Edition of this fine book some years ago, I couldn't have guessed how much pleasure I would get out of it. I now keep a copy in my office at work. At spare moments I pick a poem at random. I often find myself reading the poems around it, and the editor's commentary as well. Just reading the section introductions sucks you into reading all the poems in a section. This is the best collection for instilling or maintaining a love of poetry--I'm giving my doughter a copy today.
