About the Author
Professor William F. Messier, Jr., is the Deloitte & Touche Professor at the School of Accountancy, Georgia State University. He holds a Professor II position at the Institute for Accounting and Auditing, Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, and he is a visiting professor at SDA Bocconi in Milan, Italy. Professor Messier has a BBA from Siena College, an MS from Clarkson University, and an MBA and DBA from Indiana University. He is a CPA in Florida and has taught at the Universities of Florida and Michigan. Professor Messier has served as the Chairperson of the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association and as co-editor of the Journal of Accounting Literature. He currently serves on the AICPA's International Auditing Standards Subcommittee. Professor Messier has authored or co-authored over 45 articles in accounting, decision science, and computer science journals.

It's a fine book

The reviewer who mentioned that most of the important stuff is in the side tables with the tiny font is absolutely correct. Usually those are just summaries of information explained at length later in the chapter, but it'd be really handy to have that information front and center and larger. I know it would make the book longer and heavier, but when trying to study I'm always flipping through the book for way too long.

If you're looking at this book I'm assuming it's because you need it for class and have no say in the matter, but it IS a very informative book and will most likely be helpful if you are taking the CPA Exam in the near future. There is lots of detail and I'd say it's pretty clear, though some concepts are just inherently difficult and require rereading.

This book makes auditing as fun as possible

I used this book for an auditing class and I got a lot out of it. The book sets each chapter up in an understandable, and digestable way.The tables and charts are excellent summaries of the reading and it is entirely possible to just skip the reading and memorize those. Each chapter has thought-provoking questions at the end and activities that are helpful in analyzation. This book takes you from the first step in auditing to the way to fill out the audit report. I have fond feelings for this book.

Renowned text updated for latest PCAOB auditing standards

In its eight edition, this classic textbook continues to be (in my opinion) the highest quality textbook for auditing. Its focus on both practice and theory gives accounting students a conceptual understanding of why auditors would make the decisions that they make during an audit. Students leave this text with the orientation of an audit manager or partner (the planning and design of an audit along with the execution) rather than the orientation of a staff auditor (simply the execution), which is unfortunately the orientation of other textbooks.

Since the prior edition of the book, the PCAOB (the US Public Company Accounting Oversight Board) has issued more pronouncements than in any year of its existence so far. This edition has been revised to capture the latest PCAOB pronouncements. Most striking to me was the revision related to the PCAOB's newest standard on audit risk assessment, which now enjoys an entire chapter (not the case with the prior edition).

Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601–02 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. Grade 4-8-In this verbal and visual treat, readers have the opportunity to enjoy one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies. Coville's author's note explains that his prose adaptation is "not meant as a replacement for the original, but as an appetizer for the greater feast still to come." Thus, the story is clear and carefully told, making it easy both to follow the primary and secondary plot lines and to appreciate the intricacies of their interweavings. Coville keeps the flavor of the playwright's poetic language by using actual quotes from the play and expressions and a formal sentence structure true to the style of Elizabethan times. Delightful full-page, colored pen-and-ink illustrations add just the right touch of humor to the already wacky tale. Raglin gives a distinctive identity to all of the characters, despite their attempted disguises, and he does a particularly good job of differentiating the buffoons of the subplot from the more realistically drawn dramatis personae. Colors and designs clearly suggest the Italian court dress of the times, and accurate architectural details add life to the settings. More suited to modern audiences than Charles and Mary Lamb's classic Tales from Shakespeare (Signet, 1986), and far better written than Jan Dean's Twelfth Night (Oxford, 2002), this is a version that will have young listeners begging to portray the Bard's scenes onstage. The latest in Coville's series of retold Shakespearean plays, this volume provides a short, prose version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, a romantic comedy that offers young people such promising elements as separated twins, a woman disguised as a man, a drunken buffoon, courtship, swordplay, mistaken identity, and a practical joke. Though simplified, the story is intact and bits of the original language are preserved. Large-scale ink drawings, warmed with tints of color and shaded with cross-hatching, clearly depict the action. As Coville states in his Author's Note, "Twelfth Night remains one of the most read and performed of Shakespeare's plays." There are several really worthwhile editions of 12th Night, but don't overlook this one.

The Foreword and notes are excellent and useful; the format's sturdy and readable.

It's a good copy to have for the scholar/performer/director.

Understanding Shakespeare

For a long time I would not let my students use No Fear because I wanted them to be able to read the play in Shakespeare's words, but when I tired to discuss the plays with them, I always felt like I was the only who read the play. (I use it for Hamlet as well.) After I let them use it the first time, I was so excited to hear my students' comments on the play because they actually understood what they were reading. When they write about the play and when we discuss it, we use Shakespeare's words. We also compare the modern words and Shakespeare's words. I really like the No Fears and recommend them to people who really want to understand Shakespeare. I have taught high school and am now teaching at a university, so I know the No Fears are great on both levels.

Naxos complete recording the best so far

Please notice that G.H.'s in-house review above does not refer to the recording pictured above, nor do any of the reviews so far. What follows refers only to the Naxos set.
There are now three complete recordings of available. We have the older and elegantly read version on Harper Audio with Dorothy Tutin as the best Viola of the lot. Acted with a bit more verve though with less poetry is the Arkangel Shakespeare recording with a Scottish Malvolio and a cast of younger sounding actors who are making names for themselves in Great Britain. However I am very impressed with the "Twelfth Night" that is one of the latest additions to the Naxos Classic Drama series.
By far, this is the best-produced "Twelfth Night." One actually feels he is hearing an actual stage performance with all of the action but with the loss of none of the poetry. Perhaps the Viola does sound a little maturer than imagination would have her and the Sir Toby Belch a little less belchy sounding than others. None of the Festes sing as marvelously as did Peter Pears on the long deleted Marlowe Society recording (also with Tutin); however, on this Naxos set David Timson stays nicely in tune--and directs the production to boot. And he keeps things moving neatly along, which is saying a lot for Shakespeare recordings.
The CD version has the advantage of excellent tracking cues for not only each scene but for key points within the scene. The Harper CDs give a new track only for each new scene and the tapes (of course) are quite useless in that regard. The Arkangel series at present exists only on tapes but they are planning to reissue the entire series on CDs. So this Naxos release is the one of choice so far.

Jeremiah Tully lost his sister when a shifter attacked them while camping with friends. He blames himself…and rogues, believing they are a danger to society. When he finds a group of like-minded people who call themselves hunters, he joins up and spends three years helping them hunt, capture, and sometimes even kill shifters and vampires. Then a few new guys show up, telling tales of demons, and how they want help capturing some. Jeremiah doesn’t believe their tales, but when the demons attack, Jeremiah quickly turns into a believer. He flees the building, but then is chased down by one of the monsters when he crashes his dirt bike. When he wakes in some kind of clinic run by gargoyles, he thinks he’s a dead man. Instead, he learns that some humans live side by side with the gargoyles as mates, and one of the gargoyles, Grateman, is claiming him. While Jeremiah realizes he does have an odd attraction to Grateman, can a mating between a gargoyle and a hunter really work?

Claiming The Hunter

This is another gargoyle pairing in Maelgwn's clutch. Jeremy has been a hunter for a few years, taking care of 'feral' shifters and vampires that are attacking humans. Eventually he joined up with a more organized group led by Roger and Bethany. It was then that his conscience kicked in and he knew some of the hits weren't justified. At his core Jeremy is honorable.

There is an attack on the hunter's base and hunters Jeremy and Quinn are hurt. Well, Quinn was hurt and Jeremy was when he ran away. So both are taken back to the mansion, one to question the other to mate.

The focus is on Jeremy, his life and mating. As Jeremy is a former hunter, there is unease and distrust of having him in the clutch, even if he is Grateman's mate. There are very few interactions between him and the gargoyles and it's inconclusive if the clutch will accept Jeremy. The good news is Jeremy can give Maelgwn updated information on the hunter organization. So there's another threat to the mansion and they're planning for the attack yet that event never happens. That threat should have been included because it was due to Jeremy and Quinn that the hunters know where to attack. I felt cheated. -- Dan's Wife

Very good episode in this saga

I have been reading this series for some time now and I continue to look forward to the next installment. This one has a couple cliff hangers so hurry Ms Richards.

Lucid and fun perspective on entrepreneurship

This is a very worthwhile book that advances a lucid and academically sound perspective on entrepreneurship. It is a view on value creation that goes against the grain of much that is being taught at business schools the world around.

Despite the theory's academic credentials this book is not an abstract treatise (for a more rigorous treatment, see Sarasvathy's Effectuation: Elements of Entrepreneurial Expertise (New Horizons in Entrepreneurship series)). It wants to support aspiring and practicing entrepreneurs in building successful ventures. It is very accessibly written with a minimum of jargon. I was surprised and happy to see my 18-year old son pick up this book and read it in just a few sittings. Since it has offered interesting fodder for family table talk.

So what is `effectual entrepreneurship' about? Effectuation is a way of creating a business that is prepared to acknowledge irreducible uncertainty: the market cannot be defined; consumers are not aware of their future preferences; new technologies may emerge; available data are incomplete and conflicting. Acknowledging these constraints means that we can only have modest expectations as regards the usefulness of market research and competitive analysis to lead us to new opportunities. So, rather than the prevailing `search and select' paradigm (identify underserved markets, build business case, implement), a `create and transform' approach is in order. Therefore, the effectual entrepreneur is more like a hunter, acting on local possibilities and contingencies as she navigates an unfolding landscape: "In the concept of transformation, the creation of a market need not be intentional or even the result of foresight or imagination of possible new markets. It could simply be one way to fulfill an individual's motivation and/or an unanticipated consequence of people just doing things they think are possible and worth doing." At bottom, what separates effectual entrepreneurs from others is a different perspective on risk and control. Expert entrepreneurs deal with uncertainty, not risk. They are trying to control a future they cannot predict.

Despite the organic and messy nature of this process, Saras Sarasvathy and Stuart Read have been able to identify a number of principles that guide effectual entrepreneurs. They are:

- Start with your means: don't wait for the perfect opportunity; start taking action based on what you have readily available.
- Set affordable loss: evaluate opportunities based on whether the downside is acceptable rather than on the attractiveness of the predicted upside.
- Leverage contingencies: Embrace surprises, remain flexible as regards goals.
- Form partnerships: with people willing to make a real commitment to jointly creating the future with you.
- Create opportunities: make the future happen by working with things within your control; don't worry about predicting the future.

The book gives life to these generic principles through an inspiring patchwork of real-world cases. Hi-tech and low-tech, large and small, American and non-American examples underscore that in real life effectuation rather than the bloodless fiction of business plans is the norm in building successful companies.

The book is structured in three parts: Part I gives a broad-brush account of effectuation and its underlying principles, and deconstructs some of the prevailing myths about entrepreneurship. Part II is a nuts and bolts discussion of effectuation in action. The principles are now discussed in more detail and their implications for financing, partnerships and branding are explored. A final part briefly discusses the relevance of effectuation for large, mature companies and for social innovators. As said, many aspects of the discussion are illustrated with well-selected examples. At the back there is a handy overview chart of all the cases linking them to the effectuation principles they help to illustrate.

The research to support the argument made by this book does not stand on its own. It chimes with much of what we have learned in systems thinking and complexity science about self-organization and emergence. Other streams of research that usefully complement this perspective on entrepreneurship are focused on design thinking, reflexive practitionership, transdisciplinarity and on dealing with 'wicked problems'.

I notice the Kindle version of this book has been withdrawn. Rightly so as in its electronic incarnation this book is all but unreadable. The sophisticated layout of the printed version, with lots of inset boxes, has been turned into a bewildering mosaic of undifferentiated text blocks. All the more a pity as the e-book was sold at a hefty price. Quite a letdown from this renowned publishing house.

This book offers an inspiring and fun perspective on entrpreneurship and is wholeheartedly recommended but only in its printed format.

A Very Important Book

Effectual Entrepreneurship is an excellent and very important book on entrepreneurship and innovation. It gives a lot of practical detail on how entrepreneurship occurs and how successful entrepreneurs actually work. The detail included is very important because so many books in the past have been lacking in their explanation of how entrepreneurs actually work. This book is quite consistent with other recent work on strategic intuition (William Duggan) and Peter Sims (Little Bets). Readers interested in entrepreneurship and innovation would benefit from reading these three books together. And although this is the case, Effectual Entrepreneurship has a great deal of new insight itself; drawing on extensive and in-depth research with entrepreneurs. Do not miss this fine book by Professor Sarasvathy and her colleagues; it is excellent and indispensable.

This is an excellent textbook. I am an Assistant Professor in entrepreneurship and I made the switch to this book recently from more traditional textbooks for several reasons. Most importantly, I feel this book really captures the essence of most entrepreneurial activity and therefore is of most use to the majority of students taking an entrepreneurship course. In addition, my experience as an entrepreneurship instructor is that there is considerable redundancy across the curricula. Some repetition is good, but I don't know how many times a student has to write a feasibility study or a business plan (for a business they are never really going to launch). This book is not that. I feel it's a great complement to more traditional approaches. My one caveat is this book does assume the student is familiar with key business concepts (like sales, profits, break-even, valuation, etc), so if your students lack that background you will probably need to account for that in some other way.

A charming third installment.

The Wedding Wallah by Farahad Zama is the third book of a series (starting with The Marriage Bureau for Rich People) set in my hometown, Vizag. No one ever writes books set in Vizag, so this fact alone almost guarantees that I'd love these books. However, they're also actually pretty well-written, have great characters, and more importantly, they have a lot of heart. They remind me a lot of the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith - slow and somewhat sleepy, but not boring.

Anyway, enough about the series. The Wedding Wallah sees all of our favourite characters return: Mr. and Mrs. Ali's marriage bureau is still doing brisk business, Rehman has still not been cured of his idealism, Pari is still determined to be an independent young woman and Aruna is fully settled into her marriage, although she still helps out at the marriage bureau. We are introduced to a new character, Dilawar, who is from a wealthy and aristocratic family, but hasn't found a bride yet. His family, for whatever reason, believes that the relatively poor Pari would be a good bride for him, despite her widowed status and adopted son. Meanwhile the Naxalites (terrorists with communist ideologies) are growing increasingly active in the villages surrounding Vizag. Intertwined with these are a few stories from the marriage bureau side of things. And of course, people are falling in love all over the place.

The book is as charming as previous installments, and it left me wanting more, immediately. I'm not sure how much this has to do with my excitement whenever a place I know is mentioned (which happens a lot.) I was especially excited when the bookstore that I bought the book from was mentioned as a place that one of the characters bought books from!

I thought the Naxalite plot was a little too dramatic in comparison with the rest of the book; it was a little jarring. However, it still made sense. I think that these book really do capture Vizag very well. The only flaw that I can find is that the people sometimes seem too idealistic. This book is also slightly more racy than the other books, which was fine, but a tiny bit unexpected. I was also glad that the book addressed a few modern issues - the Naxalites are portrayed fairly, showing both the bad and the good, and I thought that the inclusion of gay rights in India was also a nice touch and a nice nod to the recent decriminalisation of homosexuality.

The Marriage Bureau adventures continue. . .

"The Wedding Wallah" was a lovely book that builds on the previous two installments in the series. Mr Zama has a talent for writing simply and clearly about India and its people and customs and the pressing social issues of the day. Over the course of the series, I have fallen in love with the Ali family, Aruna and her family and Pari and her adopted son Vasu. In this book, we are introduced to Dilawar, an old friend of Rehman, and a potential bridegroom for Pari. Dilawar is in love with a young man though and afraid to expose himself to condemnation from the society that he lives in. He is a wonderful addition to the storyline and I hope he will be a regular in the series. Along with the tales of Indian matchmaking, Mr. Zama returns to the country to examine the struggle between the poor farmers and big agricultural interests and then introduces us to a group of guerrillas that believe in kidnapping and causing mayhem in order to bring attention to their cause. It is here that I found that the transition from the business of love to the business of guerrilla warfare a bit jarring. The series until now was also quite innocent and left quite a bit to the imagination, however with the addition of the guerrillas, Aruna is placed into two different situations which (if this were a movie) would change the rating from "G" to "PG" or maybe "R". In some ways, "The Wedding Wallah" is like two different books. One of the books moves along slowly and sweetly and the other is just a bit too hectic. I did enjoy the resolution though and felt that the book went back on track once the guerilla story was resolved. In conclusion, it's a great book, just a little convoluted in parts. I'm hoping for another book in the series very soon and *I wish that Mrs. Ali would continue her writing exercises--they are delightful and informative.*

Everyday life in India

Mr Ali's marriage bureau is flourishing. His assistant, Aruna is about to take a break with her husband Ram and Pari - a cousin of Mr Ali's is going to take over from her for a time because she has lost her own job in a call centre. Pari lives opposite Mr and Mrs Ali and has an adopted son. She has received a proposal of marriage from a wealthy man which she is considering. As a widow she can choose her own marriage partner.

As other reviewers have mentioned this third book in the series covers much darker themes - the activities of a group of terrorists, the Naxilites, and the lack of acceptance of homosexuality in India. There are still many amusing incidents and a focus on the good aspects of human nature. Women look after sick relatives and put the family's interests before their own. Maybe some people seem too selfless to our Western eyes but it is not that long since women in the West would have been expected to exhibit the same behaviour.

I liked the way Mrs Ali is still working behind the scenes when she considers it necessary to influence the way things are going. People who read the first book in the series The Marriage Bureau for Rich People will recall the way she presented Aruna to Mr Ali as a suitable assistant. I also liked the insight this series gives into life in India today. People have mobile phones and computers but many aspects of their lives might seem primitive to Western eyes. Mrs Ali drying tamarinds and tomatoes in the sun seems odd to us as well as unhygienic. But there is something warm and friendly about the society these books portray and I always think that I can smell, hear and see everyday life when I read these books.

The city is a bounded entity, grounded on a minutely divided and interrelated sacrilized space. It uses that space, roles assigned by an elaborate caste system, a semantically differentiated pantheon, and the tempos and forms of the festival year and rites of passage to construct a "civic dance," a web of communication and instruction which deeply affects the experience of Bhaktapur's citizens. Levy investigates the meaning of the community to the people who live there and suggests how the religious forms that have challenged Hinduism in South Asia—Christianity and, above all, Islam—are profoundly antithetical to Hinduism as the organizing principle for cities such as Bhaktapur. Mesocosm is a groundbreaking contribution to anthropology, social and religious history, and Indian and Nepalese studies.

Gorgeous!

Wow! First let me say....not only is this one of the most beautiful fashion books I own, but it's HUGE and light! The paper on which it is printed as well as the binding is the lightest,sort of linen feeling paper I have ever seen. So many of Giambattista Valli's collections are represented, pictures are large and so many close-ups of the finest details! This book screams "Feminine"! From the pictures on the pages to the creation of the book, the word that comes to mind is Soft.
For any of you fashion lovers out there, this is an absolute must for your coffee table book library! LOVE!

Giambattista Valli is lovingly devoted to a designer and his clothes; the clothes of one single designer who is visibly influenced by some of the greats and yet retains his own perspective when composing a collection. Unlike Miuccia Prada who has openly proclaimed that she no desire to make women beautiful, Mr. Valli most unequivocally does wish to make his ladies beautiful, and it is quite obvious when you see the fruits of his labors..... for the rest of the review ... This gorgeous book on Gianbattista Valli is the ultimate coffee table stand out ! Perhaps , not a household name it is impossible to deny his talent and rare ingenuity after looking at page after page of outstanding beauty.
