Not a laundry list

I was disappointed to read the last comment since I know the author and what he was trying to do and, as a go teacher, have seen his technique work on many people. As he stated on the first page ("How to Use This Book"), he was not trying to write a book that would just be thrown away after its contents were learned. That is for laundry list books and there are several hundred of them available in English for various stages of one's go career. What he wanted to do was to introduce readers to the dynamics of go playing--go is a game, after all, and not a course in school. What he advised the reader to do was to go as far as possible through the games in the book until they were stuck, then play alot (and, yes, also look at the laundry list books!), then come back, play some more and etc. That way, say over a period of time (and not just with one reading, as it looks like some commentators have done), one would get the feel for playing on, first simple 9 x 9 boards, then 13 x 13 and finally the full, complex, 19 x 19 size. By the time one finished, one would be completely conversant with any go player, and know much of go's 4,000 year-old culture and history. That doesn't mean you would *know* all of the techniques--only by playing and studying can you do that--but you would *know about* most of them and, you would also know what you *didn't know* and needed to. In other words, because of the immense amount of ground and the different levels it covers, the book is meant to be a launching pad into the world of go, and that it does admirably and certainly far better than any other beginner's book!

Lots of Taoist mysticism and a fair introduction to Go

There are two games of Go, the forest-and-trees welter of confusion that a beginner sees, and the game within the game that everyone else comes to terms with. Shotwell's book can bring you past the boulders of confusion and leave you standing beside the deep water. Whether you swim or not... :) He's also a geisha, in the well-known Reischauer/Culture of Japan academic style, so much of the book is full of reverent Taoist and Kung Fu mysticism which may be fun, but should be transcended as soon as you "see" the inner game. It's beside the point. Bottom line, I like this book. It nudged my game forward. That said, if you want to learn Go, you should get a good computer Go game, like Go4++ (Windows, commercial) or Sente Goban (Mac OS X, freeware), dumb it down and play until you win. Then come back to this book. There's a lot of satisfaction in that first win against a computer, and it helps the book make sense.

Way above average

I am a long-time tournament chess player who is seeking to get beyond just knowing the basic rules of Go. This new title seems to offer a lot more bang for the buck than others I've reviewed. It even looks like a better buy than any single volume in the highly-regarded Janice Kim series (which has apparently risen in price due to high demand). Cost being no object, it would surely be better to own the first two or three books in that series, but given the price I think this offers better value in a single volume.
It's nicely written and handsomely laid out, and seems quite up-to-date (with information about playing on the Internet and the current [weak] state of Go-playing software).
I have over 250 chess books and consider myself quite knowledgeable in that field. This is, however, my first Go book. I fully acknowledge not having the experience to definitively judge quality as well as a long-time tournament player or teacher could. But having been around the block in life and having looked at a lot of Go titles before choosing, I can pretty strongly say that you could do a LOT worse.
In its price range, this fine new book could well become THE one to have.

Book is amazing: Kindle version is trash.

The book itself is great, an excellent resource, and I would gladly rate it 5 stars. Unfortunately, I got the kindle edition, which is almost useless as a test book. The vast majority of figures, especially after chapter 5, are thumbnails only, and many of the figures that are "full sized" are scanned in at such poor resolution that zooming in is not possible, making completion of assignments near impossible.
If you want the e-book version, I highly recommend getting it from Google.

Amazon.com: Your first reaction when you realized what was happening to your body was one you would expect: "Oh my gosh, I'm having a stroke!" Your second, though, was a little more surprising: "Wow, this is so cool!" What could be cool about a stroke?

Taylor: I grew up to study the brain because I have a brother who is only 18 months older than I am. He was very different in the way he perceived experiences and then chose to behave. As a result, I became fascinated with the human brain and how it creates our perception of reality. He was eventually diagnosed with the brain disorder schizophrenia, and I dedicated my career to the postmortem investigation of the human brain in an attempt to understand, at a biological level, what are the differences between my brain and my brother’s brain. On the morning of the stroke, I realized that my brain was no longer functioning like a "normal" brain and this insight into my brother's reality excited me. I was fascinated to intimately understand what it might be like on the inside for someone who would not be diagnosed as normal. Through the eyes of a curious scientist, this was an absolutely rare and fascinating experience for me to witness the breakdown of my own mind.

Amazon.com: What did you learn about the brain from your stroke and your recovery that your scientific training hadn't prepared you for?

Taylor: My scientific training did not teach me anything about the human spirit and the value of compassion. I had been trained as a scientist, not as a clinician. I can only hope that we are teaching our future physicians about compassion in medicine, and I know that some medical schools, including the Indiana University School of Medicine, have created a curriculum with this intention.

My training as a scientist, however, did provide me with a roadmap to how the body and brain work. And although I lost my left cognitive mind that thinks in language, I retained my right hemisphere that thinks in pictures. As a result, although I could not communicate with the external world, I had an intuitive understanding about what I needed to do in order to create an environment in which the cells in my brain could be happy and healthy enough that they could regain their function. In addition, because of my training, I had an innate trust in the ability of my brain to be able to recover itself and my mother and I respected the organ by listening to it. For example, when I was tired, I allowed my brain to sleep, and when I was fresh and capable of focusing my attention, we gave me age-appropriate toys and tools with which to work.

Amazon.com: Your stroke affected functions in your left brain, leaving you to what you call the "la-la land" of your right hemisphere. What was it like to live in your right brain, and then to rebuild your left?

Taylor: When the cells in my left brain became nonfunctional because they were swimming in a pool of blood, they lost their ability to inhibit the cells in my right hemisphere. In my right brain, I shifted into the consciousness of the present moment. I was in the right here, right now awareness, with no memories of my past and no perception of the future. The beauty of La-la land (my right hemisphere experience of the present moment) was that everything was an explosion of magnificent stimulation and I dwelled in a space of euphoria. This is great way to exist if you don't have to communicate with the external world or care whether or not you have the capacity to learn. I found that in order for me to be able to learn anything, however, I had to take information from the last moment and apply it to the present moment. When my left hemisphere was completely nonfunctional early on, it was impossible for me to learn, which was okay with me, but I am sure it was frustrating for those around me. A simple example of this was trying to put on my shoes and socks. I eventually became physically capable of putting my shoes and socks on, but I had no ability to understand why I would have to put my socks on before my shoes. To me they were simply independent actions that were not related and I did not have the cognitive ability to figure out the appropriate sequencing of the events. Over time, I regained the ability to weave moments back together to create an expanse of time, and with this ability came the ability to learn methodically again. Life in La-la land will always be just a thought away, but I am truly grateful for the ability to think with linearity once again.

Amazon.com: What can we learn about our brains and ourselves from your experience, even if we haven't lived through the kind of brain trauma you have?

Taylor: I learned that I have much more say about what goes on between my ears than I was ever taught and I believe that this is true for all of us. I used to understand that I had the ability to stop thinking about one thing by consciously choosing to preoccupy my mind with thinking about something else. But I had no idea that it only took 90 seconds for me to have an emotional circuit triggered, flush a physiological response through my body and then flush completely out of me. We can all learn that we can take full responsibility for what thoughts we are thinking and what emotional circuitry we are feeling. Knowing this and acting on this can lead us into feeling a wonderful sense of well-being and peacefulness.

Amazon.com: You are the "Singin' Scientist" for Harvard's Brain Bank (just as you were before your stroke). Could you tell us about the Brain Bank (in song or not)?

Taylor: There is a long-term shortage of brain tissue donated for research into the severe mental illnesses. Most people don’t realize that when you sign the back of your license as an organ donor, the brain is not included. If you would like to donate your brain for research, you must contact a brain bank directly. There is also a shortage of "normal control" tissue for research. The bottom line reality is that if there were more tissue available for research, then more scientists would be dedicating their careers to the study of the severe mental illnesses and we would have more answers about what is going on with these disorders. The numbers of mentally ill individuals in our society are staggering. The most serious and disabling conditions affect about 6 percent--or one in 17--adults and 9-13 percent of children in the United States. Half of all lifetime conditions of mental illness start by age 14 years, and three-fourths by age 24 years.

Important

This is, indeed, a first-person description of stroke by a scientifically and dare I say it -- spiritually -- sophisticated person. The author describes a range of experiences that make sense given our knowledge of localization of function. I'm not sure that such a detailed and consistent report by a scientist is available anywhere else. As such, this story is unusual and important. Moreover the author reports how she turned her stroke into an opportunity for profound wisdom and insight. Amazing stuff! And this may save lives.

Personally, I don't share all the author's ideas about strict functional localization in the brain... but that is secondary and doesn't detract from my admiration of her remarkable contribution.

My enjoyment of this book was enhanced considerably by the material and links at the author's website. She has posted a number of video and audio presentations, radio shows, etc.

Stroke of Brilliance!

I first came across Jill Bolte Taylor, Phd when her speech at TED (an annual conference devoted to Technology, Entertainment, Design) went viral. In it, she describes how she witnessed herself having a stroke and the subsequent feeling of peace that enveloped her when her logical left brain shut down and her right brain became dominant. I became intrigued after watching the video and then read the book.

The book expounds on her experience while having the stroke and her subsequent recovery. It was amazing on many levels:
(1) She gives a 1st person narrative of her experience of the stroke and recovery but she doesn't portray it as something we should all pity and feel sorry for. Instead, she lays it out not unlike an explorer discovering new territory, full of suspense and wonder.

(2) She gives incredible tips on how to communicate with and care for stroke victims. For e.g., some people would yell at her after they saw she didn't understand what they were saying. However, she wasn't deaf. She could only process one word at a time. If those people would have spoken more slowly rather than loudly, she would have been able to understand them. This is something that would never have occurred to me if I hadn't read this book.

(3) She takes us on a tour of the 'mystical' right side of her brain which little is known about and whose capabilities in today's world seem to be dismissed. She says the right side of the brain is the gateway to enlightenment and nirvana. She shares tips on how to 'tend the garden of your mind' and to interrupt or stop those stories we all tell ourselves over and over again (usually about how we are deficient, not good enough, etc.). She calls them loops.

Dr. Taylor's tips about how we can all achieve nirvana by accessing the right side of the brain as a conscious process is worth the price of the book many times over. We all have a "loop of deep inner peace" wired into our neurological circuitry in our right brain and we can consciously choose to run this loop whenever we wish.

Required Reading

My wife is a "massive" stroke victim. Her survival and recovery themselves were miracles. We are very fortunate. But one of the god-given gifts that has not returned is her speech. And while as a husband of 45 years when asked how she is doing often facetiously say that her loss of speech "is not all bad", I feel for her occasional frustration as she stumbles in her attempt to convey her feelings - fortunately, it is only occasional. We were warned it would be much, much worse.

But the bottom line, this book has restored her faith in the possibilities of even further recovery. It should be required reading for all stoke victims whose speech was affected. Likewise, for all caretakers of those victims. For just to see the light shine in her eye as she showed me many passages in the book that still gave her hope was well worth the price and time involved.

Very disappointed...

I do not know the author but I would have to assume he is a respected member of the trading community from the work he has done. I had such high hopes for this book being one of the few traders who believes in general that volume precedes significant price moves and certain volume patterns are tradable. I currently am trading this way. This is my 1st review though I have read more than 30 trading books but I feel the content of this book is very misleading from an author of this stature.
If I had not of in my eagerness started highlighting the book I would have sought a refund. I managed to finish the book but after about 150 pages I realized I had made a mistake. One of the reviewers "The Duke" has written a very good review and I echo most of what he has written. Though The Duke recommends the book for beginners I personally would say this book is very dangerous for beginners. Trying to trade off any of the trading setups in this book highlighting the different indicators is I feel a mistake. Only someone who has gone down the road sees the perils this book would have for a beginner as is. Remember first and foremost trading is done from the "hard right edge" of the chart not in the middle. If you do purchase this book or any other trading book keep that in mind as to the worth of what you are seeing.
Mr. Leibovit covers almost all of the different volume indicators and it was nice to see this collection ni 1 place which offers trading setups for them. I had actually started a list of the problems with his example trade setups but there were too many issues and the examples occupy most of the 400 page book. Though sometimes the only difference between examples is the indicator length, like a 5day followed by a 10day. The one I found most amusing was the 21d MoneyFlowIndex. The example shows the MFI giving 1 signal in ~2 years and if you didn't wait an additional 6 weeks to enter then you would have been down about 20% before the market turned in your direction.
As far as Mr. Leibovit's own Volume Reversal indicator I saw after I had purchased it a performance review of his indicaotr which can be found on the net. The conclusion was "It appears that Leibovit's success depends on his good judgement based on his long experience, rather than on any simple mechanical interpretation of this indicator." I see his book in a similar vein, taking anything directly from his book and trying to apply it without additional confirmation tools is asking for trouble. Why he didn't give clearer, more exact entries/exit signals while composing a 400 page book was frustrating for me.

Disappointing

This book was a disappointing read for me. The author didn't really offer much new. To his credit the book is an expansive presentation to many volume indicators. However, there were many times where I felt that the author repackaged free sites on the internet. The author's book title should be taken in an "encyclopedic" sense not in a "mastery" sense. It will show you how to trade different volume indicators based on popular practice. The author starts the book by stating that he has a proprietary volume indicator, the formula of which is not discussed in the book. He then goes over his many newsletter packages that you can subscribe for to get access to signals from this indicator.
The author presents the popular belief that strong volume in the direction of the trend confirms it and that week volume during corrections means the trend will resume. I don't believe in at least the past 3 years that this statement has held up well. There has been many low volume rallies that lasted for extended periods of time. Additionally the author's own examples had many flaws. He would show that volume is supposedly decreasing on a correction by connecting two volume spikes and then state that the volume is decreasing. But the volume is increasing if you look at it generally or look at the period's MA. The two spikes are a phenomenon of their own. The book has many examples were the volume pattern is questionable at best. He also delves into the classic chart patterns like head and shoulders and talks about how volume contracts in the right shoulder but in real life there are so many head and shoulder patterns were volume doesn't confirm them. I want to state that I have been actively trading for 10 years now. If you are a beginner, this book may be a useful read for you.

Just another regular book !!

the book talks about volume trading and how to distinguish different patterns developed on volume and use it for trading such as divergence signals and others, i simply enjoyed reading it. if your looking to use this as your $$$$$$ making technique don't waste your time. go for a different approche although i think there is some potential in PASCAL WILLAIN book but again not alone ! check my reviews for other methods.
as for people who are interested in volume i would say go a head and read it along with pascal work VALUE in Time, they did added to my experience in trading.

About the Author
Henry McBride is a layman who was born, raised, and primarily educated in Evansville, Indiana, where he currently resides. His twenty-five-plus years in Southern law enforcement as well as his involvement in the development of lesson plans for high-liability/risk law enforcement has motivated him to speak of the infinite value and the practical daily application of God's Word in our ongoing march to a final spiritual victory. This book was loaned to me by a long time friend. I, - was a long time law enforcement officer here in Duval County.. I wish I had such a resource when I was working such troubling cases, and needed to know what and how to pray.. what better resource is there then God's own word? Excellent resource for those looking to pray effectively, whether they are new Christians or have been in the faith for many years.

Great for little ones

My three year old loves the Eye Know series books. I think the format is a little confusing to read, and occasionally I question some of the facts. Overall, though these books are a great way to start kids on science.
