About the Author
Zvi Bodie is Professor of Finance and Economics at the Boston University School of Management. He is the director of Boston University’s Chartered Financial Analysts Examination Review Program and has served as consultant to many private and governmental organizations. Professor Bodie is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he was director of the NBER Project on Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System, and he is a member of the Pension Research Council of The Wharton School. He is widely published in leading professional journals, and his previous books include Pensions in the U.S. Economy, Issues in Pension Economics, and Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System.

Alex Kane is professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He was visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and the pricing of options. Professor Kane is the developer of the International Simulation Laboratory (ISL) for training and experimental research in executive decision making.

Alan Marcus is professor of finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He received his PHD in Economics from MIT in 1981. Professor Marcus recently has been a visiting professor at the Athens Laboratory of Business Administration and at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and has served as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also established the Chartered Financial Analysts Review Program at Boston College. Professor Marcus has published widely in the fields of capital markets and portfolio management, with an emphasis on applications of futures and options pricing models. His consulting work has ranged from new product development to provision of expert testimony in utility rate proceedings. He also spend two years at the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), where he developed models of mortgage pricing and credit risk, and he currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Currency Risk Management Alliance of State Street Bank and Windham Capital Management Boston.

Bozos and the market

This review has 3 purposes:

1. This is a great book for learning about investments. I read somewhere that this book teaches you about investments "without the math". There is math in this book. If you want a "math lite" reference, try one of the Dummies, Idiots or Totally Confused series.

2. This book is on the syllabus for a professional exam (CAS); however, the CAS syllabus specifies a 2008 printing. This book shows a 2006 printing, but when it arrived, it was the 2008 version of the 7th edition. I don't know if there was a 2006 printing or if Amazon just has it wrong.

3. Finally, this review is to offset the two bozos who left reviews before me. THIS IS NOT HOW YOU CONTACT CUSTOMER SERVICE! This is a forum to let other interested parties know what you thought of the text. If you can't figure that out, you probably won't be able to understand what the text is talking about anyway. (See note 1.)

Good Mainstream Investments Textbook

It is refreshing to see a chapter devoted to criticisms of the efficient market hypothesis, though a further discussion of behavioral finance would be greatly welcomed. This book is concise and provides a good balance of theory and practical knowledge.

"The Adult World. . . As Socially Perilous As the Kingdom Of Childhood"

In Peter Cameron's new novel eighteen-year-old James Sveck is on the brink of adulthood and frightened silly. And why wouldn't he be? His mother at 53 has just married her third husband and left him after a few days of a honeymoon in Las Vegas when he "borrowed" her credit cards and ran up a bill by slipping away from her bed and paying to be entertained by lap dancers. His father left his mother for a younger woman who died of cancer before he could marry her. His sarcastic-riddled sister Gillian opines that to mispronounce a child's name-- as she claims her parents have always done to her-- amounts to child abuse. James is brilliant, loves Anthony Trollope, despises for the most part people his own age, has never had either a boyfriend or a girlfriend-- both his parents question his sexual orientation-- has been accepted by Brown Univerity but thinks he wants to buy real estate in the Midwest, Nebraska or maybe Kansas, and live alone. He likes essentially two people on earth John who works in his mother's art gallery, and his grandmother because he finds them both smart and funny.

Although the writing is uneven, parts of this short novel are quite funny, at other times very sad; and Mr. Cameron's paints beautifully through the eyes of James a picture of the babbittry of life in the U. S. at the beginning of the new century. By far the best part of the novel is the section when James, by writing a winning essay in high school, wins a trip to Washington, D. C., along with two other students from each state, for a week-long seminar, The American Classroom. There he rides a school bus for the first time, eats at a Red Lobster, an Olive Garden, stays in a TraveLodge and sleeps three to a room with one young man who has never heard of Tennessee Williams. He also meets a young woman on the trip who gushes that this is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to her, "but she was from North Dakota so it made some sense."

Mr. Cameron's satire of the pretentiousness of the art world is quite wonderful. The most important artist in James' mother's gallery is one who will neither let his name be used nor allow a catalogue for his work. "The work should speak for itself." In this instance the work consists of garbage cans "decoupaged with pages torn out of varied editions of the Bible, the Torah or the Koran (for $16,000)." All of us have been there. It reminded me for all the world of "art" I saw in a local gallery several years ago. Grocery carts had been equipped with motors so that they went pell-mell around the floor bumping into other carts. Many of the viewers oohed and aahed over the art they were belolding.

For those of us who have never seen ourselves as "sharks," like the car salesman that James and his father encounter, sometimes this young man's comments and perception come close to home: for example, his always trying to get to a table first when he will be seated with a group of strangers and have to make small talk with them or his being uncomfortable and resentful when people on a subway stand "when you are seated. It's like they are standing up just to make you feel bad." Or when he sees a group of women on the train, "a gaggle of Bronxville soccer moms," and figures out that the adult world is just as scary as the kingdom of childhood. Finally James' grandmother, his greatest supporter and ally-- but that's what grandparents are for after all-- reminds him that having bad experiences sometimes helps if you don't let them defeat you. Good advice indeed.

Both this novel and James Sveck will grow on you. One could do worse than have a child or brother or boyfriend like him.

SUPERB

This deceptively slim novel has no significant bells and whistles, and its plot, what there is of it, is ordinary by any stretch of the imagination. But oh how it will take your breath away. This book has the sting of truth in every sentence, and I devoured it in less than 2 days - I read it with more gusto than anything I've read in the last few years. The writing is actually dazzling, and you will remember with an ache these delightfully dysfunctional people, so carefully rendered, so beautifully observed.

Precocious Cynicism Coming of Age

What a wonderful coming-of-age novel in the Age of Cynicism. Cameron is in total control of his narrative and precociously cynical protagonist, with all the apt props that drive us into questioning everything.

The novel is crisply written, humorous throughout, adroitly crafted, endearing, while suitably alienated by all the phony characters who presumptively "got real and cool" and haven't.

This novel is one perfectly suited to its time and age. I wish such great stories were written 40 and 50 years ago, that could be enjoyed in high school, college, and maturity. Granted, Cameron's ability to capture the precocious cynicism only works in our present state of affairs, but no author has captured its intensity with sarcastic irony better.

One's empathy and/or identity flows with each defective character (with a mild smirk that we gay men tend to get, when others think they know us better than we already know ourselves -- until, of course, we trust experience to break those barriers). I especially enjoyed the young guy and grandmother's role in the novel's heuristics.

In a culture where everyone is born-again or in therapy for being lifeless and self-consciously dead, perhaps we'll discover it is the spirit that questions and doubts, who questions orthodoxy, rather than submits to a depraved civilization in therapy for loss of feeling and meaning, perhaps some of us are shamans -- if only for ourselves.

At least that was once, and may yet again, be the hope of youth -- to question things that jaded middle age seems content with. No idealism. Just a precocious kid with doubts about "their" way of the world.

Great Tips and Tricks

I have to admit, after my recent divorce, I honestly wasn't in tune with the new nuances of dating. One of these is texting. I have obviously texted people before, but never potential dates. The lack of voice inflection and tone was very difficult for me to read and respond appropriately. This book gave me some great direction on how to use more specific wording instead of typical one word man answers. The only thing that was really missing was how to adjust to a more take control attitude and convey that via text, but I believe most of that is from me being out of the dating pool for 9 years, and not having the confidence I had. All in all, it was a very informative book/guide which I will be using as reference in the future.

I'm writing this as a 23 year old married man. I was horrible with women and got friend zoned frequently in high school. It turns out I wasn't horrible with women, I was just bad at texting to build attraction. I read a different book all those years ago and haven't been friend zoned since. (And I even managed to snag me a wife) This book teaches the importance of not being needy, including emotions in your text, (which some guys think is outright feminine ) being engaging, and also focusing on your personal life as a method of reducing your neediness.

That last point is such a powerful one. If you focus on creating a good life for yourself, you are inevitably creating a good life that a woman wants to be a part of. It doesn't matter what kind of car you drive or the 0s in your bank account, if you are a well rounded dude who also happens to have killer text game things will get easier for you. I bought this book for a friend and I'm glad that I did.

A Rulebook for Beginners

"A Rulebook for Beginners" is made up of 45 discrete rules which have been categorised into nine chapters of general arguing techniques.
Not only does the author give positive rules for arguing, but he also lists about two dozen "Common Fallacies" in a glossary format at the end of the book.

The rulebook is written in an easy to read, and easy to reference layout. While you would definitely read it from front to back the first time, it has been specifically designed so that an engaged beginner can easily refer back to this rulebook when constructing arguments.
While it is clearly focused at the beginner, an intermediate `debater' will certainly glean some helpful hints from it.

Because it is only a concise rulebook, it doesn't do into detailed arguing techniques at all. So if you are interested in more advanced arguing methods, then you should definitely look elsewhere.

Overall this is a superb text for what it was designer for; A Rulebook for Beginners.

Great Primer and Reference Guide

I bought this because I wanted a concise quick reference book for argumentation. My job deals primarily with Administrative Law and I write to aribitrators and judges on a daily basis. This book has been exceptional in helping to develop my Agency's position before a third party. The key to any good position paper or case narrative is brevity in framing the argument. This book is a daily reference for logically setting up my arguments in easy to digest sentences.

The book is written in short chapters that give examples of properly framing an argument or position. Although written primarily for an academic setting (term papers, dissertations, etc.) it has tremendous cross occupational applications. The book is written to the layman and clearly defines academic terminology commonly used in academia. It is short enough to be read in a couple of hours and arranged in a easy to follow format with each chapter building upon the previous. The chapter on fallacious arguments is superb in that it allows the user to avoid common pitfalls that could potentially overturn the most well reasoned arugument.

Ironically, the only downside to the book comes from what makes it so great, it's conciseness. A book of this type cannot possibly be expected to contain every detail and minutia of argumentation. There have been times, when I've been left needing more. But for everyday reference this is the best book on the subject I've found yet. It's small enough to not take up too much space in my small office, yet good enough to help me in developing my argument.

The book is quite short, but the value of the information this book provides more than makes up for the size considering the quality of information.

For those seeking a practical rulebook on the applications of logic, argumentation, fallacies and more, this book gives an easy to follow but robust approach.

Given the breath of the information, page for page, this book is a high-value item, especially considering it also offers a synopsis on some of the more common fallacies employed by people.

Some additional of the elements discussed in the book are generalizations, sources, deductive arguments, oral arguments, argumentative essays, arguments by analogy, and more.

The other benefit is that this book can be read by people of all ages, and it will aid them immensely. From adults, to young children, this book would fine-tune anyone’s repertoire.

Punches through anxiety about learning to draw

I'm fourty-something and decided I wanted to learn to draw. Picking up that pencil and looking at a blank piece of paper is intimidating. This book helped me break through some anxiety and me doodling in no time. After a week with the book I ended up at an art supply store buying pencils in other colors and different diameter art pens. I don't know how long this would have taken me without this book. Adult-ed drawing classes are next!

I found this book at a used book store and had so much fun with it. The pen and pencils that came with it were of good quality and the easy way it presents playing with drawing was great fun. I decided to send the book to my 14 year old granddaughter because she says she can't draw. Anyone can draw using this book. I would choose this book for anyone older than 4 or 5 years old. Very fun.

I love this book

I'm a former commercial artist & I think this book is great. I really wish my mom had given me a book like this when I was a kid. It's fun & very inspirational for a budding artist. Gives easy step by steps and has a way of making whatever the kids draw look great. Unfortunately my kids don't draw, not even a little bit (I've thrown away stacks of coloring books with only connect the dots done, in pencil). I was hoping this would inspire them, but I don't think it's possible.
