A Conversational Supplement

This is an amazing series of books for any age beginners of Oral English as a Second Language (American English). I taught this series in China for 3 years, and am currently an M.Ed student. This series not only allows an inexperienced teacher to be able to jump into any class and feel confident teaching, but offers a strong order to the subject matter that is taught. The vocabulary and grammatical forms that are introduced are very useful in daily life.

If I were to offer criticism about this series is that these books are very sterile. Without supplemental activities, students will find the repetitive 'conversations' quite droll. Secondly, although it can be used at all ages, it's better to be used as a young adult/elementary book to be used as a SUPPLEMENT to other regular English classes. Without further instruction, many students feel that the material progresses much too rapidly. For example, Lesson 1 teaches the Alphabet and "What's your name?" while Lesson 3 is teaching Present Continuous Tense.

Do YOU know you needed a CD?

I have to say..I just started using this series and thus far, the written portion is great! But how could I have known it required a very expensive CD? I sure wish that part had been stated before I ordered this series.

CAUTION, order the Activity and Test Prep Workbook

I had used level three and was quite impressed, so I ordered level one for a class I'll be teaching in a few weeks. However, I didn't realize that there are two types of workbooks and this one does NOT have the CDs. I specifically wanted access to the grammar raps, so now I've ordered the workbook again, only this time the Activity and Test Prep Workbook. It only costs a few dollars more and has CD are included. The write-up should warn you about that! No CDs!

A Candid Autobiography

This autobiography is a tell-all type of book. All of the band members and lots of the people around them participated in the book.
What I liked was the format. Each chapter had input from band members and other people that were involved in that particular chapter. You might have a girlfriend or manager also telling their view of an event. It's almost like a series of interviews.

The legend of the "Toxic Twins" is well-known to the generation that grew up listening to Aerosmith of the 70s. But the addictions went beyond just Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. It engulfed the entire band and many of the people around them. That makes the comeback of the 80s even more remarkable.
The members of Aerosmith climbed their share of mountains and had a lot of battles among themselves before they made what I think was some terrific music on "Permanent Vacation", "Nine Lives", and "Pump."
Any good band biography or autobiography will share details about who contributed in what way on each album or song. "Walk This Way" delivers on that count.
This isn't one of those books that leaves the reader wanting more, it's mostly laid out there in open view. Warts and all.
Is everything in the book? Probably not, but it's candid enough that you get a basic idea of just what kind of toll the rock roll lifestyle can take on the individual members of a wildly popular rock and roll band.
It's definitely worth the read.

Difficult narrative to follow...More like an interview.

This book so far is a little difficult to read because it plays like one long interview where each band member makes statements and then they are all pieced together into one long narrative. I have not read the whole thing because I find it difficult to follow. I would have preferred to have it read like the standard biography or autobiography where there is a cohesive narrative. I guess since this autobiography is technically by the whole band, it is difficult to achieve one long narrative but since Motley Crue was able to do it with "The Dirt" I figured Aerosmith could do it as well. It would have been cool if each member contributed various chapters focusing on various times in their lives. Fortunately, Steven Tyler's solo autobiography reads a lot better and much more easily.

Dream Until Your Dreams Come True

I arrived late to the Blue Army, in fact I didn't see Aerosmith live until October 1998 at the Nissan Pavilion midway through their "Nine Lives Tour". Now, over eleven years after that gig I've read their biography, "Walk this Way" told through the mouths of the Band and fashioned together by the talented rock & roll biographer Stephen Davis. I was not expecting a five-star read. First, this is not literature in any sense of the word. It is not a written story. It is the transcribed oral history of an extended interview with the insiders of the band taken from the memories of their lives together over their first three decades. Second, as I write this, their story continues. Aerosmith is finishing their fourth decade of hard rock and at 61 years of age Steven Tyler took a tumble off the stage during a performance in South Dakota busting his shoulder and splitting open his head. Aerosmith has subsequently cancelled a few tour dates to, "get healthy". These guys never quit. In the late sixties they dreamed of becoming rock & rollers. Though hard work in the seventies they did it and provided an American response to the British invasion. But then they fell, hitting rock bottom in the eighties. Their music lived on through the influence it provided to several generations and genres as they, Aerosmith, continued to destroy themselves from within. They fought with each other, they fought against the darkness of drug addiction, and they fought against the industry and agents they had trusted and relied on. But they recovered, all of them, and arose from the ashes alive, like no other band has ever done. And now at the end of this book, during the "Nine Lives Tour" they had climbed back to the top, with clear heads and a sober outlook on life to arguably become the greatest rock & roll band of all time.

Are they American hero's and role models who overcame the vices of their industry or are they villains and the representatives of all that is wrong with the glorification of excess in a culture of sex, drugs, and rock & roll? Joe Perry is quoted as saying, 'I don't want fans to think we're clean, upstanding American boys, but we are American, and we do stand up." We can argue all day about the influence and glorification a rock & roll culture might have on our children and we can provide our children a wholesome family life attempting to shelter them from the tyranny of drugs and sex and the violent energy of hard rock. We can, in essence, shelter them from Aerosmith. But then they will never hear the simplest and perhaps greatest lyrics of all time. And personally I cannot find a thing wrong with this message.

A fantastic start to a new action-packed trilogy!

When Ben Warner is being bullied at his new school and a cafeteria table suddenly snaps shut by itself, Ben is plunged into the secret world of actuation, a little known science that combines physics and imagination to perform unbelievable feats. It's always been Ben and his mother against the world, plus it's difficult to make friends when you move around so much. He and his mom are a team; his mom needs him - who else would remind her of the small details that slip her mind, like taking her pills? When Dr. Hughes enters his life, introducing him to actuation, and he finds that he has a natural talent for it, Ben feels that he's finally found something of his own. Things turn deadly, however, when an experimental technology Dr. Hughes has been working on is stolen and the doctor herself is taken captive by a group that hopes to use actuation to achieve their nefarious goals.

Ben and his friend Peter are taken in by another group, The Quantum League, a group that also studies actuation but for good... supposedly. The Quantum League might claim they're the good guys, but Ben feels suspiciously like a captive. He panics when he learns that he's been erased from his mother's memory "for the greater good." The League promises that they'll reverse the process, giving his mother's memories back, if Ben cooperates and helps them retrieve Dr. Hughes' technology. Ben doesn't know who to trust, but he'll do anything to get his mother and his life back.

This first installment of Kirby's new Quantum League trilogy, THE SPELL ROBBERS, was a solid beginning. From the start, there's plenty of action and intrigue, hooking readers from the first pages. I loved the descriptions of the League's headquarters, full of agents practicing actuation and plotting missions. It had an superhero/comic book vibe that jumped off the page.

Ben's character was refreshing. He's a natural when it comes to actuation and he's drawn to the power and possibilities, but, at the same time, he loves his mom and can't bear to leave her behind. Few of the other characters bat an eye at having to leave their families behind to become an agent, so Ben's refusal and his vow to do whatever it takes to get his life back really stands out.

I'll definitely be reading the next Quantum League books - this one ended in a really interesting place and with many unanswered questions!

Can't wait for #2!

This was a really fun book! The characters were developed and likable, the pacing was perfect, the plot was engaging, the whole thing was just exciting and fun to read. I don't read a lot of youth fiction, but my 8 year old wanted to read this, so I did too. It was perfect for him! If you're looking for a quality youth fiction read, this one delivers. I would recommend this book to anyone!

A Sure-Fire Hit For Boys and Girls Who Like Heroic Adventure

The Quantum League: Spell Robbers is my first experience with Edgar Award-winning author Matthew J. Kirby, and I was not disappointed. While the plot is not super unique at first glance, Kirby executes wonderfully. Readers' imaginations will be sparked as they watch Ben learn how to "actuate," or use his thoughts to create things like rain clouds and fireballs. And as Kirby tells the tale, he creates a nice comfortable routine for Ben before bringing a sudden surprise that will bring you to the edge of your seat, and he'll keep your attention until the conclusion.

There are a couple of things I particularly enjoyed about the book. First, Ben's character and several others' are surprisingly well-drawn for a middle-grade action story. In this type of book, it's common to let the plot do all the talking, but here the larger storyline is shaped by character development. The emotional impact lends more interest. Secondly, there is moral ambiguity. This is not your stock good guys vs. bad guys story. Ben wrestles with deciding whom to trust and it seems no one comes out entirely clean. Finally, Ben is motivated by his love for his mother and his desire to reunite with her, despite the "detachment" that the so-called good guys perform to wipe him from her memory. There is sadness and complexity in Ben's story (and in the stories of others). And these somber notes inspire the reader to root for him; it's not just bravery but heart that makes Ben heroic. Beyond caring about his mother, he's also a compassionate friend.

Though the conclusion sets up the next installment, you won't feel like you're dangling from a cliff when you finish. But you will be excited about continuing the story to find out what happens next! I know I am!

With a quick-moving plot, and action and intrigue enough to keep even reluctant readers turning the pages, The Quantum League: Spell Robbers is a sure-fire hit for boys and girls who like heroic adventure. Part superheroes, part spy book, part sci-fi/fantasy, give this to kids who like Artemis Fowl or Spy School.
