About the Author

Susan Ferguson is Professor of Sociology at Grinnell College, where she has taught for almost 20 years. Ferguson regularly teaches Introduction to Sociology, and her critically acclaimed anthology, Mapping the Social Landscape: Readings in Sociology (McGraw-Hill, 2010) is used in introductory classes around the country. Ferguson also teaches courses on the family, medical sociology, the Sociology of the Body, and a new seminar on social inequality and identity. Ferguson has published in all of these areas, including the research collection, Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic (with co-editor Anne Kasper, Palgrave, 2000), and Shifting the Center: Understanding Contemporary Families (McGraw-Hill, 2011). In addition, Ferguson is the General Editor for “Contemporary Family Perspectives,” which is a series of research monographs and short texts on the family (Sage Publications).

Ferguson, who grew up in a working class family in Colorado, still considers the Rocky Mountains to be her spiritual home. A first-generation college student, Ferguson was able to attend college with the help of scholarships, work study, and financial loans. She majored in Political Science and Spanish and also completed certificates of study in Women’s Studies and Latin American Studies. After working a couple of years for a large research grant sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, Ferguson entered graduate school and completed her master’s degree in sociology at Colorado State University and her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her areas of study are gender, family, women’s health, and pedagogy, but her primary enthusiasm is for teaching.

Awesome - If You Can Find It!

I teach an undergrad intro course in Women's and Gender Studies. I can't tell you how many potential texts I reviewed before FINALLY finding this one, which is the absolute best of the best. The theoretical underpinnings of the book are social constructionism and intersectionality -- and the chapters don't just pay lip service to these theoretical frameworks, they explain them and apply them in ways that make sense to college students. Every week I use selections from three books with each week organized thematically: this text, The Essential Feminist Reader (Modern Library Classics) and The Feminist Utopia Project: Fifty-Seven Visions of a Wildly Better Future. These books work very well in concert and the students can really sink their teeth into the content. My only complaint with Ferguson's text is it's lack of availability -- it's on backorder everywhere, including on Amazon, and there is no e-book version. Get this book. Use it. You will not be disappointed and neither will your students.

great story, great history/heritage

I recommend this book.
First, this is an interesting adventure/ set of adventures of ppl of long ago. Fun to read. The first half is mythical and has magical and religious elements (of pre-christian viking religion) with queer beasts, magical talismans and visiting gods. The second half is semi-historical with ppl who really lived in real places, and others who are speculated to be real ppl but their names while similar are different and so they may be fictional. However there is still some magic, and the ppl are often coexisting with other ppl from different eras, and so not really historical.)

Second, these tales show us (to some extent) how the ppl of old lived and thought and gives us a piece of our pre-Christian heritage. pretty much any citizen of UK and most of US are going to be related to the vikings). Maybe you don't need that history, but our culture is so awash in Roman and Greek culture, philosophy and myth (even tho we don't grow up on those writings as much as the generations up to 50 yrs ago did, so much language, expressions etc stem from there), not to mention the weight of Christian culture and thinking (nothing wrong with it, but again, it's not stories of N Euro ppl), that we have really forgotten a part of our heritage. It's really a big blank space.

Third, these old norse stories in addition to being an exciting adventure, have their share of wisdom about life in them as much as any of the old stories of the Gr/Roman/ Christian ones do.

I haven't read any other translation, and can't read the original, so I can't comment on the translation, but it reads well and clearly with easy to find notes that clarify or enlarge on the story/text. There are good essays/ appendices explaining history, culture, other works, as well as the family trees of the characters.
Altogether a good book.

Readable rendering of seminal saga

This 13th century Icelandic saga of Sigurd the dragon slayer was rediscovered in 19th century Europe and was a prime source for Wagner's Ring cycle, especially the Siegfried part. Elements will also be found in Tolkien. Personally, I came to Norse mythology through the BBC's Adventures of Noggin the Nog (Did he ever put an end to Nogbad the Bad?).

It is a neglected tradition, as evidenced by the paucity of translations in print. We commonly talk of the Classical (Greek and Roman) and Judeo-Christian roots of our culture, but greatly underestimate the Norse and Celtic influences. The Volsung saga and the Niebelungenlied are among the best known and influential of the medieval epics and if you enjoy one you will probably enjoy the other. You might start with the Volsungs because theirs is the shorter and more coherent story, even though the more mythical and fantastic.

Byock's translation is very readable, reflecting the sparse, unadorned style of the original. His introduction is excellent, especially the notes on Wagner, in which he traces the influence of this work in the Ring.

The Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok and The Lay of the Raven follow the Volsung saga in the original manuscripts and form a continuous narrative. So why, as the Volsung saga is quite short, are they not all three published together in one volume? I felt rather short changed. Even so, I heartily recommend this book.

A Famous Tale Well Translated

I wasn't familiar with the Saga of the Volsungs when I bought this book, recommended by a friend. I had read the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda and enjoyed their great scope and sweep. Here the focus is on one family and its victories, tragedies, betrayals, and revenges. While I was not as enthralled by its story as I was by the Eddas, I've realized since I read it that it brings down to a human scale the mythology and cultural morality I am studying. I am still confused by the ethics and morality of the tale and its time--a good thing; 21st Century people have to reach across more than a dozen centuries to understand these works, written without any knowledge of Christianity.

I've decided to set this book aside for a few months and pick it up again. That says a lot about its value.

A brilliant interactive Santa book!

I thought this was a book where you would pull back the flaps to reveal more images but it's even better! Each page has a groove travelling through it taking Santa on a journey. Santa is on a little sleigh on wheels that you pull back a few times like a hot wheels car, position him at the start point within the groove and he motors his way across the page, taking your toddler or young child on his journey, across each page. The pictures and text are great as with all Usborne books. My son is a bit too young for this...he just wants to grab Santa off the book...but mommy and daddy loved it ;-). For a 3+ year old this book is awesome!!

This is one of the cutest books I have ever seen! A MUST FOR TODDLERS. Sit and enjoy together! I didn't find this book until after Christmas so I bought for next Christmas.

Wonderful epic fantasy with some surprising plot twists

I have to admit, after reading the first novel in this series, The Last Whisper of the Gods, I thought I knew where everything was going. I was wrong. The Curse in the Gift takes a few of the characters in expected directions but there are some real surprises. As much as I liked The Last Whisper of the Gods, this is a better read. It’s faster paced with more action and the story is more complex. The characters develop nicely. Magic is more evident. The cliffhangers from the first book are all tied up. A new villain is introduced. The stakes become higher. If there’s a nit-pick, it’s that Berardinelli’s prose is sometimes wordy and there are a few awkward sentences. Still, compared to a lot of books I read these days (many of which come out of major publishing houses), this is as good or better. Berardinelli’s style isn’t up there with Martin or Rowling or Donaldson but he’s better than Brooks and dozens of others.

The Curse in the Gift is obviously designed to lead directly into the third book but there’s a sense of closure in the way this one ends. It doesn’t cut off at an inappropriate point. The first book is a good read but, the deeper I got into this one, the more apparent it became that The Last Whisper of the Gods was setup. This is where the meat can be found and it’s a great meal. Can’t wait to see how it all ends.

Running out of body parts.

This is actually a pretty good book. The story is good as are most of the interactions but it does have some flaws. The biggest two IMHO are the near omnipotent and omniscient antagonist (not in absolute power) but in that the worlds magic rules don't apply to him. This is problematic because the physical "cost" of using magic, the physical destruction of the casters body is the only limiting factor. While everyone else pays the cost the antagonist seems immune. The second is the need to torture the antagonist of ridiculous levels. At this point he's lost a hand, arm and leg, while the antagonist is in perfect condition. Of course this is the normal story arc but it felt done to extreme in this book. It made me want fast forward and skip to when the antagonist torture ends and the evenly matched contest begins

Easy to read, but keeps all the details!

This book makes it simple to read, so it doesn't take as long to get through chapters as other textbooks. It doesn't leave any details out, either, so it's really the best of both worlds.

rich and detailed with beautiful illustrations

I purchased the second edition of this book and am thrilled with it.

The illustrations are some of the most beautiful and helpful that I have seen in any neuroscience textbook. The descriptions are clear, the mechanisms are systematically laid out, and research anecdotes are sprinkled throughout.

What is great about the developmental perspective is it helps you understand at an intuitive level that the brain is not a set of compartmentalized "brain areas" wired together like a digital computer. Instead, the brain is a complex 3-dimensional organ with a continuous structure that is the result of cell proliferation, tissue folding, and self-wiring.

The research anecdotes are helpful because they give you a sense for how dynamic and new developmental neuroscience is as a field, and they show just how indirect the methods often need to be to uncover the processes of cellular differentiation and axonal wiring.

This book, especially with the illustrations and attached CDROM, truly seems to be a labor of love.

Decent content, but needs editing and is slightly confusing

"Development of the Nervous System" is a textbook which appears to be an introductory text to the field. The textbook is supposed to be appropriate for undergraduates, however, as a biology graduate student with some previous exposure to neurobiology, I had some difficulties with the text because of some of the reasons mentioned below.

It was difficult not to be distracted by the numerous grammatical and spelling errors. There were so many of them (for example, 'roll' when the authors meant 'role' and 'spacial' instead of 'spatial'), I wondered if the text were ever edited.

Even without the mistakes in English, the textbook suffers from other flaws. One major problem is that the authors do not bother to explain basic terms or concepts before using them when describing experiments. For example, the authors never define the difference between 'afferent' and 'efferent' neuronal projections, but refer to the terms profusely. Ironically, one of the most common grammatical errors in the textbook was the use of 'effect' when the authors meant 'affect.'

A colleague of mine who borrowed the book from me remarked that the index was not very useful; I also noticed some mistakes in the index.

Having said that, one of the major strengths of the text is the organization of the chapters, which proceed logically from the earliest neural induction events to the behavior of a whole organism. The introductory paragraphs of each chapter are also well written; they relate the topics to something that should be tangible to everyone.

Another major strength is the introduction of concepts by discussing the experiments behind them. Importantly, the text describes experiments from many different model organisms and using a variety of techniques. Abundant figures accompany the text and sufficiently illustrate concepts and experiments.

The content of the textbook is decent, but to be more useful (especially as an introductory text), this textbook would benefit from:
1) editing for English
2) an improved, more thorough and accurate index
3) a glossary or definitions and explanations within the text
4) and perhaps side "boxes" explaining some of the experimental techniques discussed.
