While they cope with their mortality, tensions flare over the reintroduction of the Highborne, formerly the highest caste of night elf nobility, into their society. Many night elves are unable to pardon the Highborne for the destruction unleashed on Azeroth millennia ago by their reckless use of magic.

When a murdered Highborne is discovered on the outskirts of Darnassus, Malfurion and Tyrande move to stop further bloodshed and unrest by appointing one of the night elves’ most cunning and skilled agents to find the killer: the renowned warden Maiev Shadowsong. Yet with all that is transpiring in Darnassus, the Alliance might be powerless to stop the relentless new warchief Garrosh from seizing the whole of Ashenvale.

Mislead

The book is one of unique taste. I don't think it was bad, just I'm not interested in Night elves. I bought this book because I thought it will be about the guy on the cover Varian. When in fact more than seventy percent of it is about Night elves and their mystery assassin. If I wasn't such a Varian fan I'll give this a book a thumb down. The book title said wolfheart, so you expect to see most of the book talk about worgens and Varian but it did not. The assassin killing highborne should have been side story at best not the main piece. If the worgen and King varian plot switch places with the night elf and the assassin plot it would be a whole new story. I meant the book should be called Jarod's journey not wolfheart because it barely dealt with the subject.I'm just saying, if you want to buy this book to know more about Varian or the worgens don't. Just read wiki page. If you want to know more about the night elfs then go and buy it.I insist, the title though is misleading as hell

Great Warcraft book, don't hesitate to buy!

As an avid fan of the Warcraft series and lore, I found this book great. The story and action were detailed but doesnt drag on. The action sequences are epic and the storyline itself is well written.

Overall the book is written pretty well except for some minor pet peeves that I have.

Heres some information for you Knaak, if an object is fired from a bow, its called an arrow, if its fired from a crossbolt THEN you can call it a bolt......

But seriously, check this book out. Its a good read.

Great WoW Novell; Must Read for Alliance Players

Okay, I have to admit this book surprised me. I went in expecting Knaak to be his usual self. While I'm not among his legion of haters, I will admit that Golden is usually the superior writer. Not this time. Richard Knaak has outdone himself, taking the characters of Tyrande, Malfurion, Varian, and Maiev and bringing them to live with an interesting story about acceptance, both of others and oneself.

First, I want to address the complaints about "bland characterizations." I'm often wondering if I read the same book as some other people. Yes, Varian Wrynn does start off his usual, obstinate, annoying self. But one of the plots of this book is deconstructing that, and moving Varian past his "King/Gladiator" dichotomy and making him one whole, balanced person again.

Tyrande is a bit sticker question. In World of Warcraft, the character has done remarkably little, so her only "in-game" characterization comes from Warcraft III, where she was a bloodthirsty, borderline racial supremacist who had no qualms murdering her own people if they got in her way. In other words, she was a lot like Maiev. Does Knaak portray her differently? Yes. he treats her a High Priestess. Someone's who believes in faith and hope, and thinks carefully before acting. I personally find this characterization vastly more endearing than the one from WCIII, who I didn't care if she lived or died. To each their own. As for accusations that she just sits there, that again, is overlooking her role in the conference, and her own (admittedly short) fight scenes.

Okay, back to the review. If you loathe Knaak's style, this book probably won't change your mind. But if you've been on the fence, or merely didn't like his own author-created characters, "Wolfheart" may just change your mind.

For Alliance fans, this book gives the faction a much needed boost of morale. In the game itself, the Alliance has taken the short end of the stick in regards to the storyline. By the third act, Varian Wrynn has finally mastered his rage and (some of) his prejudices, and leads the Alliance to it's first major victory in the face of the new Horde Blitzkrieg.

My other reservation is for new readers. If you're not already familiar with the Warcraft world, you'll be a bit lost by what's going on. This book is *not* a jumping on point for those not already familiar with Warcraft lore. Try "Rise of the Horde" or "Arthas: Rise of the Lich King" instead.

This hot little novella had many things I definitely love:

a big, beefy, adorably insecure main character; a sleek, mysterious love interest; southern charme; musicians; and sizzling hot erotic tension.

It also had one of my biggest all time pet peeves, namely a really silly Big Misunderstandig as the main point of conflict.

Why then the rating (an a warmly recommended, too)?

Because of the writing. Beef’s 1st person POV narrative voice was so compelling, the story so fast-paced and concise, the characters so likeable–every single one of them, even the supportive ones–I couldn’t put it down. Loved this book.

If you’re looking for a short, sweet, hot, PWP holiday read, you can’t go wrong with this. (And it’s free–from Goodreads!)

and the climax where the heroine faces down the bad guy was pointless and senseless

The beginning was quite strong for a romance novel but by chapter 5 it started going downhill the hero and the villain were not strong, and the climax where the heroine faces down the bad guy was pointless and senseless. The characters names as Storm and Flame seemed like names from an adults only movie. No one would have had those names in that time period.

Bulky, beautiful, but lacking substance

This is a big and bulky book (11" x 9.5" x 1.7"; weighing 7.4 lbs) but it is beautiful and well made. The cover and pages are of extremely good quality hence the photgraphs and maps are very clear, lively, and colourful. It is comprehensive in listing the main producers in each region across the world and has a chart describing in one sentence each the quality of the six vintages from 2004 to 2009. A book like this required a big team of writers and thus the writing style and quality are not consistent. In many instances, the short information about an individual producer is well written and informative, but in others, the information may only appeal to those looking specifically for those specific notes. For example, the write up on Domaine Arnou-Lachaux is as follows:

Pascal places great emphasis on yield, reducing the number of bunches a month before vintage. He also encourages grass between the rows to compete with the vines. He ages some of the wine in 500 litre (112 gal) casks, for the slow oxygenation properties, and combines this with the wines from the traditional burgundy barrels."

Most wines drinkers are likely to encounter only a small fraction of the wines described. It is therefore a book that some may rate as only a three-star, but I rather like it and it seems worthy of a four-star because this is one of the few books one can find names of relatively unknown wines, but there are bound to be names missing. There are other smaller books that might provide more information in a more wieldy form. Dorling & Kindersley's "Eyewitness Companions: Wines of the World" is one of them.

Accomplishing the impossible on time and under budget

"More than My Share of it All" is the autobiography of Clarence "Kelly" Johnson the iconic and prolific chief Engineer and designer at Lockheed Aviation from 1933-1975. He contributed to the designs of more than 40 aircraft. He is only one of two designers to have won the Collier Trophy for greatest American aerospace achievement of the year twice. (The other was Glenn Curtiss.) A companion book is "Skunk Works: A Personal History of My Years at Lockheed" which is the autobiography of Ben Rich another Collier Trophy winner. It chronicles advanced development at Lockheed from 1950 - 1990.
Kelly Johnson was an organizational genius. His "Skunk Works" based on Kelly's fourteen points for overcoming bureaucratic inefficiency using a small team of highly skilled, self-motivated individuals is recognized universally as the preferred method for time-critical advanced research. These two books describe how Kelly - and then Ben - were able to deliver cutting edge aviation technology on-time and under budget. As a former aerospace engineer I consider these books required reading for anyone contemplating a career in aerospace. I would add one other book: "Quest for Performance" by former NACA scientist Lawrence Loftin, is a comprehensive history of aviation design for the non-technical reader. I have all three of these books in my Kindle library.
Johnson's book also provides insight into Kelly the man. He took personal responsibility for the fatal accidents that are inevitable when pushing boundaries. His deliberate demeanor clashed with the flamboyant Howard Hughes with whom he collaborated in the development of the Constellation. There is one encounter where Hughes took the controls during a checkout flight and nearly killed everyone onboard including Kelly. He never flew with Hughes again.
Kelly considers the SR-71 his crowning achievement. As an engineering triumph it has no equal. The SR-71 still holds the absolute speed and altitude records for air-breathing manned airplanes. His F-104 holds the low-altitude absolute speed record. It is unlikely that these records will be broken anytime soon.
Kelly Johnson was the consummate minimalist. His clean functional designs are aesthetically pleasing - some like the F-104, Constellation and SR-71 are breathtaking. As with living sculptures such as birds and whales an airplane's shape is dictated not by the whims of stylists but by the laws of physics.

Being an aviation enthusiast, I've always been fascinated with the Skunk Works, and those who have worked there. As others have said, the book is a bit skimpy on Skunk Works details, but is an interesting look at Kelly Jonson's life at and away from his work.

The thing I'll remember most is his work ethic and ability to complete a project and produce a product for much less time and money than perhaps others in the industry could. I think that if his methods were to be applied broadly in today's manufacturing industries, the U.S. could return to being a superpower of productivity.

The legendary engineer in his own words

While nobody is going to read this book for its literary qualities, this is a book which should be read by all engineers. Like other reviewers, I wished for more detail, but Johnson's prose reflects the spare purposefulness of his designs. He takes us from his youth, through school and his employment career.
I read this book around the same time as the mythical man month, and recommend software engineers consider reading them together, as many of the ideas on building effective "Skunk Works" for developing new technology are the same.

Clear, Easy to understand, Practical applications

I have been playing on and off for about 10 years. I have read fretboard theory books before, the CAGED system included, jazz comping, and numnerous books on Modes. I can honestly say not one of them explain the application as well as this book (and videos).

Most of what Serna teaches you probably have seen before; but what is unique about this material is the application. I dont know how many times before in other material the CAGED system, pentatonic scale, and modes have beenn disussed but never applied with actual examples. This course ties it all togther. At least it did for me. For the first time ever, I understand how modes are actually used and which are common and which are rare. Try finding that info in any other course - never happen.

Throughout the course Serna provides examples from the book and videos of how to apply what you have learned from actual songs you have heard on the radio etc.. Although he makes no attempt to teach the entire song, he gives you the understanding to figure it out yourself; so if you want to be told where to put your fingers to play a particular song this is not your book/course. If you want to learn and be able to figure things out, this course should be very helpful. It has been for me at least. Also, I think he does not reproduce entire songs ver batem because the music industry is closing down sites that directly reproduce artist intellectual property. That is why all the courses are now teaching methods "in the style of... Jimi Hendrix etc".

I play electric blues. I make no attempt to play top 40 cover tunes so my goal is to learn my own style for myself so I need to understand what I am doing and how to figure things out. Without a doubt this book (and videos) has accomplished more in the last month than almost all the other material combined because for the first time ever it "connected the numerous dots" that other courses have failed to do. For example I never fully understood how the pentatonic patterns, both major and minor, tie in to the CAGED system as well as the arpeggio form of the chord.

I do not recommend the course for beginners that do not know too many chords or progressions yet. Also I do not recommend it for those who simply want to "play" without understanding the underlying theory.

Good grasp on solid information

This is my first guitar learning book besides a Mel Bay book that one of my friends gave me a while ago. I am pleased with this book and I do find it helpful. I certainly have no regrets from buying it. I also like how the author gives a personal touch by sending and replying to e-mails. He also sends links to some extra materials that compliment the material in the book.

I just want to add that I do know music theory from my years playing sax, if that weighs on my review at all.

I'm sure that anyone who wants to get a solid hold on the basics of playing guitar without learning music theory will benefit greatly from this book. It covers the pentatonic patterns, CAGED chord patterns, arpeggio patterns, interval patterns, major scale patterns, and a few other things, and relates them to each other very well. The visuals are used very effectively to teach the relations. You don't need to sight read to learn from this book and you will not learn how to sight read from it. The emphasis is on patterns and shapes and relating them to songs as well as to each other. This is a very effective and simple way to learn the fretboard and it is done very well in this book. The author is very descriptive of how to apply what he is teaching to playing songs, and the song references are great if you are able to play by ear (because the music is not written in the book, and it would cost a fortune to buy all of the sheet music). The author also encourages the reader to contact him at the end of each chapter so I don't think you will have any problem getting answers to any questions you have.

The book sits very easily on my music stand thanks to the spiral binding, and the material is presented extremely well. I get the impression that the author put a lot of love into this creation.

This book is marketed very well here on Amazon because, as you can see, no reviewer has anything bad to say about it. However, I was a little mislead by the statement in the description "The ONLY BOOK IN THE WORLD that includes important details to hundreds of popular songs." The author does explain how to relate the material from the book to the songs listed (by title and artist) in the book, but I think the description goes a little overboard.

Overall - This is a keeper and a great resource for learning to use the fretboard in an effective and simple way. I wouldn't say it's going to make you a great player because only practice and constant learning can do that, but it's a good starting place and a good guide to the basics of the fretboard. I was looking for a guide to learning my way around the fretboard and this book put it together in a way I could see it, know it and use it.

For more in depth study I plan on getting a different book (maybe the Berklee Method) to learn the more complete and technical theory and practice of the guitar, but I also enjoy learning that type of stuff.

Overlaps with Fretboard Logic, but has some useful info on modes

This book overlaps a great deal with Fretboard Logic vols 1&2 which I purchased at the same time. It shows you the CAGED chords, scales from the chords, etc. I got about halfway thru the book when I started to see some things I didn't know already. I consider myself an intermediate player.

The way he explains modes is unique, to my knowledge, and very helpful. The mode is in context of what root it's played over. You can't hear the mode of a scale without hearing the root underneath. This alone made the book worth the price of admission for me, and I'm still working through the rest of it.

Some silly things: (1) Auhor lists examples of songs that contain what he is teaching. A list of songs with the E chord in them, oh yeah! Later this is somewhat more useful, for example a list of songs with chromatic scales, or mostly seventh chords. Many of author's teachings cite the same songs as example without specifying what part of the song is relevant to what's being taught. I know there's copyright issues but without this the examples are next to useless.

(2) Author shows the treble staff, the guitar tab, the bass staff, and the bass tab for each example. But never does the bass tab differ from the guitar tab! This is just a waste of space. Honestly, if I wanted to learn bass I'd buy a bass book.

Neither this book nor Fretboard Logic place much emphasis on learning where the root of a scale pattern resides. I know the value of this so I'm going to pencil this in myself.

I guess it's of value to me if I learned something from it. I have yet to discover the perfect guitar book and I don't think it exists. I give it three stars.
