To find out, Powers and his wife jettisoned 80 percent of their stuff, left their 2,000-square-foot Queens townhouse, and moved into a 350-square-foot "micro-apartment" in Greenwich Village. Downshifting to a two-day workweek, Powers explores the viability of Slow Food and Slow Money, technology fasts and urban sanctuaries. Discovering a colorful cast of New Yorkers attempting to resist the culture of Total Work, Powers offers an inspiring exploration for anyone trying to make urban life more people- and planet-friendly.

“All of us sense that we could live better, kinder lives. But Bill Powers has the courage to try to change and then — ever so artfully, without the slightest wag of a finger — to show us how.”
— Colin Beavan, author of No Impact Man

“Bill Powers has done it again — taken us on an honest, touching journey into living lightly and intelligently in a distracted world. And he’s such a good writer that we don’t even know we are being educated, challenged, and changed.”
— Vicki Robin, coauthor of the international bestseller Your Money or Your Life and author of Blessing the Hands That Feed Us

“The reenchantment of urban life — so compromised by the accelerated techno-industrial culture — takes work, and William Powers saves us a lot of time on the learning curve. Hats off, especially to his courage.”
— Douglas Tompkins, founder of the North Face clothing company and the Foundation for Deep Ecology

“Is it possible to live an earthh-friendly and spiritually fulfilling life in the middle of the bustle of a big city? William Powers and his wife are the perfect people to find out. I found that the tales of the remarkable people they meet, the challenges they confront, and the beauty and joy they discover nourished a part of my soul that rarely gets fed. Never preachy, always entertaining, and often wise, this is a splendid book for anyone wanting to bring more heart and joy to urban living.”
— John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America

“New Slow City tells an inspiring story. At the outset, Powers’s goal — to live slowly and mindfully in frantic Manhattan — seems quixotic in the extreme. But one should never underestimate a determined idealist. This delightfully provocative book will speak to anyone trying to build a balanced life in our crazy world. I first came to know Powers’s work because we coincidentally share the same name. Now I read him to question my own assumptions and reimagine how to live.”
— William Powers, New York Times–bestselling author of Hamlet’s BlackBerry

“An inspirational quest to slow down, simplify, and find serenity in a supercharged city. William Powers discovers the joy in less stuff, less work, and less speed!”
— Francine Jay, author of The Joy of Less, A Minimalist Living Guide

“Powers’s message, honed through his experiences living in poor countries like Bolivia, shows that we can live simply, sustainably, and happily. And I know it’s real because I stayed with him in his tiny place. But Powers also slows down — at least as important as scaling down — and learns to savor the little daily miracles of life. This message may be just what you need to change your own life for the better. Don’t miss it!”
— John de Graaf, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller Affluenza and What’s the Economy For, Anyway? and executive director of Take Back Your Time

"Powers places the difficult decisions we face on a daily basis into an equation that should provide us all with an optimistic glimpse of how to slow our lives down. Read New Slow City and watch as its insights pepper your daily decisions while you navigate the folly of the fast life.”
— Richard McCarthy, executive director of Slow Food USA

“In New Slow City, William Powers offers us his challenging and delightful story of learning to live with less in the heart of New York City. In his warm narrative style, Powers guides the reader through the struggles he and his wife face in getting rid of stuff and squeezing their lives into a 350-square-foot micro-apartment. This work is a profound witness that a meaningful and joyful life of conservation is possible, even amid the powers of speed in the quintessential American city.”
— C. Christopher Smith, senior editor of the Englewood Review of Books and coauthor of Slow Church: Cultivating Community in the Patient Way of Jesus

Questions assumptions about our modern but hectic lifestyles
By Jill L.
Just finished reading "New Slow City", and enjoyed seeing how the author began to re-frame for himself, the possibilities for a joyful, fulfilling, and abundant lifestyle in the midst of a bustling, gritty and sometimes impersonal place like NYC. Even though I differ in time, space and background, I was still struck by some of the similarities of our experiences:

>> The feeling of isolation one can have when you go against the flow of what is defined as "normal".
>> His practice of “living at the third story” (I call it “looking up” when I go for my daily lunch-time walks in mid-town Manhattan)
>> The discovery and use of "urban sanctuaries" that create little pockets of delight and opportunities for "escape"
>> The growing belief in the absurdity of the hectic pace at which we live and its corresponding social, physical and mental costs

Some may feel a bit frustrated that by the end of the book, no universal prescriptions are offered or that the application of the insights gleaned and shared are limited in who can realistically pursue them, given the restrictions imposed by certain firmly entrenched societal structures. However, as the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day so changing or deconstructing it, won't happen overnight either. But what I believe anyone can take away from this book is that we can and should examine existing assumptions, and then seek alternatives to replace them with. For these reasons I would recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves at a crossroads and is trying to discover how/where/what they can do differently to create a life that is uniquely meaningful and joyful to them.

the smells and the sounds of this fine world. This obvious
By Matt
Take a moment to appreciate the tastes, the sights, the smells and the sounds of this fine world. This obvious, but often ignored sentiment is important everywhere and not just in NYC. But man, as someone that lives in the city, I know plenty of people who can afford to hear this reminder again. Re-learning these ethics in the context of NYC felt practical and really inspiring. It also made me think back to the recent Climate March. And it made me think how many people should have or would have held up 'live slow!' sings (hopefully something more clever than that) if they had read this book. Living slow is living sustainability (in the full sense of the word).

An engaging memoir inspiring us all to find slower, more mindful, and joy-full filled lives.
By Vanessa Voller
Before reading New Slow City (NSC) I was a somewhat typical twenty something University student: overscheduled, perpetually busy, compromising my own physical and emotional well being, and nearing exhaustion. At only twenty. I first came to NSC during one of the “busiest” times of my life, while living in one of Latin America’s largest metropolises -- La Paz, Bolivia. NSC armed me with the courage to find mindfulness amidst the buzzing, urban pulse; the hope to believe that there is another way outside of hyper-consumerist, hyper-distractive, hyper-paced, over scheduled dominant culture; and some practical strategies to create for my own self a slower, more joy-full, and health-full life within La Paz.

Now back in the United States, I hope to carry with me the lessons learned from NSC into my own hometown and University to inspire a new, or actually old, way of being that revalorizes human-to-human connection, simplicity, mindfulness, thrift, and the “vernacular cultures” of my own grandparents, great-grandparents and even great great-grandparents.

NSC is a truly engaging, heart and mind opening, page turning read. Appropriate for all ages wanting to find an alternative way of being. A wonderful “sequel” to Twelve by Twelve: A One Room Cabin Off the Grid and Beyond the American Dream. Remarkably inspiring, leaving me, and many of my friends and colleagues, questioning our own lives and wanting to create for ourselves more meaningful, slower paced, simpler, and joy-full lives.

Thank you Bill for sharing such intimate details of your and Melissa’s own journey in finding simplicity in the world’s largest city. You have (and continually are!) inspiring and educating many.
