The Trumps: Three Generations of Builders and a Presidential Candidate, by Gwenda Blair

The story of three generations of Trumps in a “copiously researched” (The New York Times) narrative and an account of the presidential candidate’s extraordinary path to success. “Rich, detailed, and informative, and not just for Trump loyalists or detractors” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

This richly detailed account of the Trump family reflects America’s transformation from a land of striving immigrants to a world in which the aura of wealth alone can guarantee a fortune. The Trumps begins with a portrait of Donald's immigrant grandfather Frederick Trump, a restaurant owner who amassed the first Trump fortune by providing miners with food, liquor, and easy access to women during the Klondike gold rush. His son, Fred, took advantage of New Deal policy, using government subsidies and loopholes to construct hugely successful housing developments in the 1940s and 1950s. The profits from those enterprises paved the way for Donald's roller-coaster ride into the new century.

With his talent for what he calls “truthful hyperbole,” Donald Trump turned the deal-making know-how of his forebears into an art form. By describing Donald’s much-publicized life in the context of his family, Gwenda Blair adds an important dimension to a glitzy, larger-than-life contradictory figure known around the world as The Donald.

Amazon.com Review
As she did in Almost Golden: Jessica Savitch and the Selling of Television News, journalist Gwenda Blair examines a historical trend through an individual story--or in this case, three--profiling a trio of very different men who happened to be grandfather, father, and son. Friedrich Trump (1869-1918), a German-born barber who got rich providing lodging, food, and female companionship to Klondike gold miners, founded the family real estate empire in Queens, New York. Fred Trump (1905-99) took advantage of new government programs to build affordable urban housing and make lots of money for himself. Donald, born in 1946, was just as interested in being famous as in being wealthy. His first big coup, the Grand Hyatt hotel, opened in 1980, launching a decade of extravagant acquisitions (including two Atlantic City casinos and the Plaza Hotel) that made "the Donald" a byword for '80s excess. Blair conscientiously covers Donald's flamboyant personal life, from the womanizing through the stormy marriage to Ivana and the notorious romance with Marla Maples. Her sometimes portentous prose suits the pumped-up style of the man who promoted his projects by promoting himself with everything from a ghostwritten autobiography, The Art of the Deal, to a board game bearing his name. But the author's main interest, and her book's principal fascination, lies in tracing the evolution of American real estate development over the course of the 20th century, as bare-knuckled individual entrepreneurship gave way to business in partnership with government, which was in turn replaced by high-stakes financial manipulation using image to shape reality. Blair may well be right when she claims that the Trumps' saga constitutes "a singular history of American capitalism itself." --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
This well-balanced, serious examination of the Trump family business proves its mettle by not mentioning The Donald's love life until it approaches page 300, and even then Blair is more concerned about Ivana's influence on Trump's business sense than on his hormones. While Donald is the star of Blair's work, his father and grandfather emerge as colorful characters in their own right. Arriving from Germany in 1885, Friedrich Trump spent a brief time in New York before striking out for Alaska, where he operated combined saloon-restaurant-brothels in several gold rush towns. When things went sour, Trump returned to New York, where he opened a modest real estate office in Queens that his son, Fred Jr., would greatly expand. Taking advantage of government programs designed to spur construction during the Depression, the middle Trump made his reputation by constructing well-built houses and apartments for the middle class. Following WWII, when the government was eager to find ways to ease the housing shortage, he used his contacts in city government to become a multimillionaire and one of the biggest landlords in Brooklyn and Queens. But his son wasn't interested in the boroughs; Donald used his father's money to make his fortune in Manhattan and then in Atlantic City. Blair documents the painstaking process whereby Trump transformed the Commodore Hotel to the Grand Hyatt and made his first mark in New York. With access to the Trump family and their business associates, Blair (bestselling author of Almost Gone) gives a first-rate, firsthand account of Donald Trump's rise, fall and resurrection as a business tycoon, while also exploring the motivation that drove him to risk it all to seek even more fame and fortune. From Booklist
It is hard to imagine Donald Trump sharing billing with anyone, even if it is his father and grandfather. True, "the Donald" did devote a dozen pages to his father, Fred, in Trump: The Art of the Deal (1987) and acknowledge him as the most important influence on his life. In fact, Fred helped bail Donald out of several financial tight spots. Now Blair provides this first in-depth look at Fred Trump as well as Friedrich Trump, Donald's grandfather. The author had the cooperation of Donald and other members of the Trump family, but her book is extensively researched and surprisingly candid in its assessment of the Trumps' business successes and failures and of their personal lives. The eldest Trump immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 16 in 1885, thrived as a saloonkeeper, and ran a brothel during the Klondike gold rush before moving to New York, where he became wealthy selling real estate. His son, taking advantage of government subsidies, got rich by building "ordinary homes for ordinary people" in Queens and Brooklyn. Donald brought us up to date about himself with The Art of the Comeback (1997). But Blair, who is also the author of Almost Golden: Jessica Savitch and the Selling of Television News (1988), provides a new and revealing look that takes into account the early influences on his life. There is certain to be demand for this book not only among people interested in business but also among readers who follow the celebrity TV shows and the gossip columns in the print media. Interest Is Not Where You Might Expect
By taking a rest
The first generation you will read about was never allowed to reach its conclusion, due to an unfortunate early death. The second and third generations of this grandfather, father, and son trio are much longer. The second generation too has recently come to a close after a very long and successful life, in excess of 93 years, and the verdict on the third is still evolving. There is no question where the business acumen was at its greatest, the talent rested with Mr. Fred Trump, the second of the three men, and his story is the one of substance. The grandfather never had a chance to play out what likely would have been a very successful life, but during the time he was a businessman he was creative, bold, and gutsy as any pioneer.
Donald Trump is certainly the most well known, for marketing himself is a large part of whom he is and what he does. He is a man who can only speak in superlatives about anything he is involved in, even if some grand and prominent project bears his name and little else. The name on a building has very little to do with who owns it, who paid for it, or who made it happen. Donald Trump's primary business is Donald Trump. His flair for promotion and obsession with how he is perceived has become his career. There is no question he has had his successful projects, but the question of would they ever have happened without his father is a legitimate one. And he probably would have had much more success and a much larger fortune had he stuck to the business he knew, developing real estate. He got sidetracked with buying an airline, paying absurd prices for casinos that still are far from trophy properties, and while he may have benefited, the holders of stock and various bond issues have not.
Fred Trump is the man you would have given your money to and slept soundly at night. He was an astute man of business, he was self-made, and he spent no time promoting who he was. In this manner he was like many other long time major developers in the NYC area that developed massive amounts of real estate and fortunes to match without having any interest in the world knowing what they were worth.
Forbes Magazine often documents the calls they receive from Donald Trump complaining about where he is listed on their richest people list. This is not something his father or grandfather ever would have contemplated, nor would they brag to anyone listening how they increased their net worth by failing to honor financial commitments. In the end his charismatic style allowed him to get financial institutions so grossly over invested in his view of the world that he could never be allowed to go bankrupt, as the lenders could not afford it.
His predecessors in the family rate much higher on substance, and the newest Mr. Trump rates highly on style. But for all of the perceived satisfaction he would have the public believes he enjoys, in the end the author portrays a man that craves publicity to the detriment of his personal life. Squiring around beautiful women makes for nice pictures, but he and it and getting a bit old.

New York through the lives three fascinating Characters
By Dr. Max Goldensohn
This is a wonderful book. Ms. Blair has taken a complex and difficult subject and made it exciting and fascinating. The Trumps have always deserved analysis beyond the scandal-sheet treatment they usually get in the press. Ms. Blair has provided an account of all the real adventures behind their successes and failures: political, financial and even personal. After reading this book, one feels that the links between strong individuals and the unfolding of history beome clear and alive. The writing is great, the story even better.

THE FOUNDER, THE BUILDER AND THE STAR
By Dorothy Weiss
Did you ever wonder how Donald Trump could have been so knowledgable and astute at so young an age. How did he do it? Who taught him? Family that's who. Unbelievably true. Ms Blair's research spans three generations. Friedrich who eventually earned a fortune in Alaska; his son Fred Jr. who made millions from U.S. government housing programs and his grandson, "the Donald" real estate developer and promoter. The book gives us an up close view of Donald Trump's ego, his wives and their role, his survival after near-bankruptcy, his eagerness for publicity and his "midas" touch. The man can close a deal. Well written and fascinating. Once upon a time there was the Rothchilds and the Rockefellers. This era it seems belongs to the Trump Dynasty.

The Chronology of Water: A Memoir, by Lidia Yuknavitch

This is not your mother’s memoir. In The Chronology of Water, Lidia Yuknavitch expertly moves the reader through issues of gender, sexuality, violence, and the family from the point of view of a lifelong swimmer turned artist. In writing that explores the nature of memoir itself, her story traces the effect of extreme grief on a young woman’s developing sexuality that some define as untraditional because of her attraction to both men and women. Her emergence as a writer evolves at the same time and takes the narrator on a journey of addiction, self-destruction, and ultimately survival that finally comes in the shape of love and motherhood.

Review

"I've read Ms. Yuknavitch's book The Chronology of Water, cover to cover, a dozen times. I am still reading it. And I will, most likely, return to it for inspiration and ideas, and out of sheer admiration, for the rest of my life. The book is extraordinary." —Chuck Palahniuk, Pygmy

"I love this book and I am thankful that Lidia Yuknavitch has written it for me and for everyone else who has ever had to sometimes kind of work at staying alive. It’s about the body, brain, and soul of a woman who has managed to scratch up through the slime and concrete and crap of life in order to resurrect herself. The kind of book Janis Joplin might have written if she had made it through the fire - raw, tough, pure, more full of love than you thought possible and sometimes even hilarious. This is the book Lidia Yuknavitch was put on the planet to write for us." —Rebecca Brown, author of The Gifts of the Body

"The Chronology of Water’s central metaphor works beautifully: we all keep our heads above water, look around, and enjoy our corporeal life despite all the reasons not to; beyond that, the book is immensely impressive to me on a human level: the narrator/speaker/protagonist/author emerges from a seriously hellish childhood and spooky adolescence into a middle age not of bliss, certainly, but of convincing engagement and satisfaction." —David Shields, author of Reality Hunger: A Manifesto

"This intensely powerful memoir touches depths yet unheard of in contemporary writing. I read it at one sitting and wondered for days after about love, time, and truth. Can't get me any more excited than this." —Andrei Codrescu, author of The Poetry Lesson

"Flooded with light and incandescent beauty, Lidia Yuknavitch's The Chronology of Water cuts through the heart of the reader. These fierce life stories gleam, fiery images passing just beneath the surface of the pages. You will feel rage, fear, release, and joy, and you will not be able to stop reading this deeply brave and human voice." —Diana Abu-Jaber, Origin: A Novel

"Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir The Chronology of Water is a brutal beauty bomb and a true love song. Rich with story, alive with emotion, both merciful and utterly merciless, I am forever altered by every stunning page. This is the book I’m going to press into everyone’s hands for years to come. This is the book I've been waiting to read all of my life." —Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild

A Stunning Book of Non-fiction, Which Broke My Heart and Gave Me Hope
By MG
Beyond its clear, dazzling lyrical passages, beyond its fierce energy and unending optimism, there is so much to say about this confessional, bravely written memoir, and you can be sure that The Chronology of Water is an important book. Its themes -- womanhood, motherhood, stillbirth, women's reproductive rights, bisexuality, love and fatherhood, promiscuity and sexual violence, drug and alcohol abuse, sorrow and grief, hope, and survival -- are cultural and political talking points, significant because these issues ought to be discussed and must be heard. That Lidia Yuknavitch is brave enough to begin these discussions with her readers is well worth applauding, and I think it would be a shame and an oversight to think anything less of the importance, and relevance, of this book.

the world on the body electric.
By C.E. Bagwell
This book is not pretty. It does not talk about an eating disorder. You will not like the protagonist/voice. This book knows no redemption. Finally, a book that can tell you what the world feels like on your nerves. This book tells you what it feels feels like to be a woman, to have a body that is as electric, as alive as any man's. This book is so spectacular in its ordinariness, it will give you permission to be so too. If you want to read a memoir that won't spoon feed you society's rhetoric on why good girls go bad, why girls eat their feelings, or try not to screw their feelings away, then read this. Read this book if you've ever felt ugly, or did things that were ugly. Read this book if you are lonely. Read this book because if you do not have the words for what happened to you, maybe Lidia Yuknavitch does.

"Excess Ain't Rebellion. You're Drinking What They're Selling."
By Megan Hewins
This book has an exceptional amount of hype surrounding it. Having supposedly created a new category labeled "Anti-Memoir," I had some reasonably high expectations for this work.

If you take any kind of creative writing classes, or study literature at the college level you will already be familiar with the push toward legitimizing creative non-fiction memoirs. On a fundamental level I'm not really interested in that debate. If someone's writing can hold my attention, entertain, and get me to engage with their text, I'm on board. Fiction, poetry, non-fiction, or mix genre. Good writing stands on its own and transcends any genre. However, the prose in "The Chronology of Water" is premeditated and forced. It reads like any other self-obsessed MFA non-fiction essay awaiting rejection in a lit mag slush pile. It's another example of how this genre is failing to launch.

On a line level the prose is highly pretentious and indulges in narcissistic self-aware faux avant-garde technique applied ad naseum. I'm all for a poignant fragment, but technique applied without reason or restraint renders the attempts into literary gimmicks (e.g. artsy-fartsy nonsense). At the line-level the book will drive an attentive reader bonkers. Anyone foreign to the MFA artsy-fartsy culture will just think there are a lot of typos and bad editing.

Which perhaps could be forgiven if the substance were weighty enough. Frankly, I feel that Yuknavitch is an unreliable narrator of her own life. I certainly don't believe in the truth of this memoir part and parcel. I believe only in Yuknavitch's desire to shock and awe the reader at any cost. All the up-close and personal details feel pimped and slimy. The events are not so much exposed and explored as they are posed and marketed. In the age of internet porn, no one has the luxury of being a prude anymore. Yuknavitch's silly sex details read like teen swaggering, which would be condemned as excessive if this were written by a male, but Yunavitch insists it is all sexy and empowering because she's a woman. The former bad-girl turned house kitten Ph.D. recounts what a naughty slut she once was. Sexual? Yes. Sexy? Not even close.

Read any of the prurient passages and transpose the gender and then ask yourself if you'd read the same thing from a male. I'd then invite you to ask yourself if parroting a braggart legacy of misogyny is really empowering to anyone, male or female. And you can offer the rebuttal "Oh but it's a memoir, she's just recounting her life." But I don't buy it, and that comes down to a question of credibility. Yuknavitch guts her own credibility at every turn. Non-fiction requires a fundamental devotion to the truth and Yuknavitch's tendency toward self-aggrandizing hyperbole left me in disbelief.

It's hard to not judge when reading a memoir, especially one that is so intent on not asking for your permission or forgiveness. I'm not really interested in condemning Yuknavitch. I don't want to be anyone's moral nanny. I believe women can be just as narcissistically self-destructive as any man. What I condemn is the boredom of it all. How does Yuknavitch afford her Rock `n Roll lifestyle? At the expense of the safety, sobriety, and sanity of everyone around her and after ruining other people's lives, she publishes an unabashed memoir of her exploits. Alcoholism, narcissism, and sex-addiction served straight with no chaser of complexity quickly becomes an easily dismissed, salaciously boring read.

In the last few essays Yuknavitch seems to sense this and goes all mushy, which I didn't find redemptive, believable, or satisfying either. It reads more like selling out. The transformation from hard-edged selfish addict to deep-thinking literary snob is not shown, it's told - and again, I just don't believe it. Yuknavitch doesn't pick herself up off the floor and straighten out her own life. No, she looks into the eyes of her married lover and when he tells her he wants her to have his baby - Whoomp There It Is! - She's done been saved by a man's redemptive love (insert Disney desperate lack-of-agency female chorus here). At every turn I feel the authenticity of experience is withheld, my trust as a reader trampled, and my time wasted.

I once heard a tragedy defined as a story where characters come close to transcending circumstances but fail to grow and live up to their potential. In that sense, this memoir, its prose and its "protagonist" are a real tragedy. This has that current buzz on it, where a lot of people are discussing the book - so by all means read it if you want to participate in that dialog, but don't believe the hype.

A Must Have in Swimmer's Library
By I. Makarov
Not everyone of us has a chance in life to be coached under world-classes coaches that these authors are (watching the Olympics, I wondered what my swimming times would have been like have I been coached by Bob Bowman). But this book gives you a chance to get inside their minds and start doing what they do with their swimmers.

NOTE, this is not the book that will teach you anything about stroke technique. Rather, it'll teach you everything else you need to know besides that - how to exercise properly, how to properly stretch, how to warm up and cool down before races, how and when to eat, AND, what I liked the most, how to build a year round training program to help you peak in your swimming times at the right time of the year.

The book is very well written (took me just a day to read through it all), comes with a DVD that will show you all the important moves for your workouts, and overall - perhaps the greatest value for $15 you will find in any swimming product out there.

I recommended it to all my masters swimming teammates.

Great resources for swimmers
By G. B. Brown
After a break of too many years, I've started lap swimming again for fitness. This book has been great for building a repertoire of dryland exercises to help me improve my stroke, my endurance, my overall fitness level. I shared with my trainer who has started using it for all our sessions together. As a result, I've made huge improvements in my swimming workouts. In a relatively short time, I've improved my swimming times, decreased my stroke count per length, and seen my daily distance increase from a mile to 3000 yards per work out. The DVD that's included demonstrates how to do the exercises and is a great companion to the book.

A Will of Iron, by Linda Beutler

Only days after his disastrous proposal, the untimely death of Anne de Bourgh draws Fitzwilliam Darcy and his cousin Colonel Alexander Fitzwilliam back to Rosings Park before Elizabeth Bennet has left the neighborhood. Their return finds Rosings swathed in mourning. In death, Anne is revealed as having lived a rich life of the mind, and she plotted rather constantly to escape her loathsome mother, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Anne's journal-spirited into the hands of Elizabeth and Charlotte Collins-holds her candid observations on life and her family. It also exposes her final, and sadly fatal, means of outwitting her mother. Anne's Last Will and Testament, with its peculiar bequests, sends Lady Catherine into a tailspin and throws into turmoil every relationship amongst the Bennets, Darcys, Fitzwilliams, Collinses, and even the Bingleys! Was Anne de bourgh a shrewder judge of character than Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzilliam Darcy combined? Includes mature content.

Unabashed Farce—Entertaining!
By Anne
The death of Anne de Bourgh brings Darcy (saddened) and Colonel Fitzwilliam (now rich and in need of a wife) back to Rosings just days after Elizabeth rejected Darcy’s proposal. The main characters are Anne (shown through candid observations in her journal over the past year), Lady Catherine (who reveals her affinity with raptors—oh! if she could have been born a goshawk), Mr. Collins (challenged to be a support to Lady Catherine in her bereavement, but joins her in advancing a romance), Mrs. Collins (a little giddy, but even more grateful to Lady Catherine), Georgiana (overwhelmed, but hoping to facilitate her brother’s romance) and Elizabeth (regretting her unforgivable rejection of Darcy, she now settles for an engagement with a painting). As the situation at Rosings turns into the stuff of nightmares, Jane (more spirited), Mr. Bingley (apologetic), and Mr. Bennet (still laughing at them all—and only sorry that he didn’t get to meet Lady Catherine) arrive.

This is an unabashed farce which requires unquestioning acceptance of many crazy, impossible and even improbable events. In exchange for that uncritical acceptance, it does deliver an entertaining story. Its main weakness, I would say, is in the attempt to combine the fantastical elements with a more traditional presentation of some aspects of the romantic relationships. The movement between the magical world (for example, where bereaved family members flout the conventions of society—without any consequences) and the mundane world (where Elizabeth thinks Darcy can’t ever love her again—and he thinks maybe she should marry his cousin since she won’t marry him) is frequently the point where the fantasy wears thin.

There are occasional mis-used words: “But I would not conscience the gossip” (countenance?) and several awkward sentences, but it rises above the usual standards for Jane Austen fan fiction. There are graphic sexual scenes; these occur largely in the final chapters when the three (!) newly married couples are described on their wedding nights. This section could easily be skipped by readers who do not want to read them, but there are other graphic incidents described relatively briefly scattered throughout the book.

Humorous and Murderous. Good fun.
By Ms. Jen
Bravo to Linda Beutler on writing a humorous and murderous Pride and Prejudice variation that was never boring and made my neighbor inquire why I was laughing so much last night.

Neighbor: "Whatever were you doing?"
Me: "Reading."
Her: "A book?"
Me: "Yes, I was improving my mind with extensive reading."
Her: "Oh, I could hear the laughter over my TV."
Not being a reader at all, she didn't ask about the book but did want to talk about the strange reality tv show she had been watching.

Anywho... The action in this P&P what-if starts out just after the Hunsford proposal after Anne de Bourgh dies and all the major characters remain or return to Rosings Park as the deaths pile up. No angst here, as really, Ms. Beutler crafts the best off-ing of Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine in all of fan fiction and one gets to understand the private person of Miss de Bourgh through interspersed journal entries.

For those of you who were a little put out on Ms. Beutler's last book, Longbourne to London, expressing that the love scenes were a bit too breathtaking for you, you may read A Will of Iron happily, as the lovey dovey bits are at the end and are in line with the rest of the story: funny, discrete, and fast paced.

I re-read the story today to catch all of the little details. Thanks to Ms. Beutler for a fine book.

Oh, My Goodness - just when you think it is safe - don't drink the tea nor eat the cakes!
By S. L. Majczan
To use the author's own words, “And more apt and clever satires are rarely created.” “…amateurish and rather ghoulish production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream?” “A decidedly macabre lover’s lane”

At first I was horrified with the "serial" events, but then as I read on I was Rolling On the Floor Laughing. Do not think me unholy, with all the dire and deadly happenings but this was just so over the top. I read it over one day and, obviously, could not put it down.

As the book description tells you, events commence shortly after Darcy’s disastrous proposal at Hunsford. He and the Colonel have left but return as Anne has died. The doctor is called but Lady Catherine throws him out after hearing his pronouncement about Anne’s condition – the condition that led to her death? Others are called in or show up and the house is in an uproar. Mrs. Jenkinson is fired, the jewelry is counted and then the magistrate is involved. Lady C. will not bury Anne until the Archbishop is present to conduct the funeral service. And when Lady C. reads of a Mr. C., she takes action. Now who could Mr. C. be? Is it the man in the collar?

This tale has a spiraling of interconnected happenings. The POV goes from the reading of Anne’s journals (which have been spirited out of the house), at first by Charlotte and Elizabeth, to reading of both Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s yearnings, regrets and suppositions and back to the journals. There are two readings of Wills: point and counterpoint to each other. The characters of Bingley and Jane have more insight and loyalty than in canon. Their words show some wisdom as to observations they have made. And although not all the happenings are exactly as in canon we do have some pairings we expect and hope for but also a one new and surprising one.

We have most of the characters with whom we are familiar: Darcy, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Mr. Collins, Lady Catherine, Anne, Mrs. Jenkinson, Mr. Bennet, Sir Lucas and Maria, Georgiana, Col. Fitzwilliam and his family, Wickham and we hear a little of the other Bennets back in Longbourn. While most of the action is at Rosings, we spend some time at Longbourn and there are mentions of London.

There are descriptions of an intimate nature. Charlotte will not allow Elizabeth to read one journal due to its content and to Lizzy’s maidenly sensibilities. MA rating. I was very pleased with the outcome. And although I would not have wished for Anne’s demise I was intrigued to read of her observations of the people who came into her circle and of the way in which she sought and planned for her freedom. Her journals are presented sporadically throughout this novel. I do believe some readers may not accept her way of dealing with a mother like Lady C. but if/when you read of the history you may empathize with Anne’s plans and schemes.

The cover was apropos with which you will, I am sure, agree with if you decide to read this story. I do recommend such.

Most Complete Introductory Materials Science Text Available
By J. Bult
This textbook is, by far, the most thorough text available for introductory materials science students. I have used this text book both to assist my students in Intro to Materials Science and to review for my PhD examination.
The text examines each topic in its fundamental scientific meaning; then relates it to individual materials. This technique is accomplished in a much more complete manner than Callister's text and is far superior to the material classification approach that Askeland takes.
I highly recommend this text for anyone wanting to review core materials science topics or studying for an introductory materials science course.

Ghost Canoe, by Will Hobbs

After a sailing ship breaks up on the rocks off Washington's storm-tossed Cape Flattery, Nathan McAllister, the fourteen-year-old son of the lighthouse keeper, refuses to believe the authorities, who say there were no survivors. Unexplained footprints on a desolate beach, a theft at the trading post, and glimpses of a wild "hairy man" convince Nathan that someone is hiding in the remote sea caves along the coast. With his new friend, Lighthouse George, a fisherman from the famed Makah whaling tribe, Nathan paddles the fierce waters of the Pacific--fishing, hunting seals, searching for clues. Alone in the forest, Nathan discovers a ghostly canoe and a skeleton that may unlock the mystery of ancient treasure, betrayal . . .and murder.

From Publishers Weekly
In this intense adaptation of Hobbs's suspenseful novel set in 1874 Washington state, 14-year-old Nathan MacAllister uncovers a chilling murder-mystery involving a greedy sailor and members of a local Native American tribe. As the son of a lighthouse keeper, Nathan is accustomed to the storm-ravaged desolate life on Cape Flattery. He has adopted the ways of the Makah Indians as well, learning to fish and hunt under the tutelage of a family friend (and Makah) Lighthouse George. But when a clipper ship sinks just off the cape, Nathan wonders if it's true that there were no survivors. After all, who could be spying on the Makah tribe and making strange footprints on the beach? The answers to these and other questions become all too clear when the mysterious "hairy man" John Kane arrives in the village, eager to find and peddle Makah artifactsAthe same artifacts Nathan has already discovered in a "ghost canoe," a sacred form of Makah burial. Gaines proves a versatile performer, gamely taking on roles of all ages, backgrounds and genders. Ages 8-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9. With characteristic skill, Hobbs blends together a number of elements to create an exciting adventure set in 1874 on Washington's rugged Olympic peninsula. Nathan, 14, tries to unravel the mystery of a shipwreck and the captain's murder. With Lighthouse George, a Makah fisherman, the boy paddles canoes on delivery runs to the damp, inhospitable island of Tatoosh, where his father is the lighthouse keeper, and on hunting expeditions for whales and seals. Curious about footprints found on a desolate beach near the shipwreck where all were supposedly lost, the boy explores the peninsula and encounters a shadowy figure brandishing a knife in a dark cave, a nervous local trader burying a small metal box, and a burial "ghost" canoe mounted high among tree branches facing the sea. When the boy's father receives a letter referring to a lost treasure map and the likelihood of foul play in the shipwreck, Nathan begins to piece together the truth. In a climactic scene, he is threatened by the murderer, and Lighthouse George and an eccentric village outcast come to Nathan's rescue. A gallery of good, evil, eccentric, and misunderstood characters teaches him the meaning of friendship and enriches his appreciation of another culture. Dramatic, vivid descriptions of the Pacific landscape and Makah lifestyle and customs create a rich backdrop for Nathan's adventures and discoveries. A winning tale that artfully combines history, nature, and suspense.?Gerry Larson, Durham Magnet Center, Durham, NC

From Booklist
Gr. 6^-8. Hobbs really knows how to please his readers. This time he's created an exciting historical adventure touched with a real mystery and set in a remote, exotic locale. To that, he's added Spanish treasure, a nasty villain and his quirky companion, and lots of action. What a read! Fourteen-year-old Nathan MacAllister helps his father tend a lighthouse off the northwest coast of Washington State. When his mother's health fails, he moves with her to the Makah village on the mainland, hoping the slightly drier climate will speed her recovery. From the moment he arrives, it's clear that something strange is going on: the captain of a wrecked ship has been murdered, someone is hiding in the caves around the coast, money and supplies have been stolen, and there's a mysterious stranger around. As Nathan unravels the puzzling goings-on, he discovers that he has endangered himself. As always, Hobbs delivers well-developed characters and a plot that never falters. Here, he also provides a respectful view of Indian life through Nathan's eyes. Chris Sherman

From a parent's point of view, Will Hobbs has another hit
By A Customer
First off, this review will be somewhat biased as Mr. Hobbs was a teacher of mine three years in a row. If the love of reading is a fire, Mr Hobbs is the spark. He kindled the desire to read in countless children during his years as a teacher, partly because he knew us so well, and that is what makes him such a terrific author in his current work- he knows what will get kids to read and keep them reading. My children both read his books, and I read most everything that they read, just to stay in touch with what they are doing. I actually enjoy reading Mr. Hobbs' books as much as they do, the characters are real, the experiences are fresh, and the stories are enough to make me dream of my own youth. I recently moved to the Seattle area, and have explored the area in which Ghost Canoe is set. Mr. Hobbs has done a marvelous job of capturing the mood and mystery of this beautiful corner of our world. His portrayl of the Macaw tribe is true to life (as it was) and helps shed some light on the recent events in their tribe. That alone makes this book a great read for just about any preteen.

If you like to read to your children, you'll love this book.

A chapter a night, that's all it takes. With the punch of London's "White Fang" or Gary Paulsen's "Winterdance", Hobbs' "Ghost Canoe" has captured the imaginations of my seven and nine year-old children. The historical and cultural lessons are a bonus for the kids (and me) in this fast-paced action adventure. Indians, war canoes, whales, robbers, shipwrecks, lighthouses and more, it's all stuff kids and their Dad's will love. Having grown up in the Northwest and being familiar with many of the locations, this book was especially fun for me.

Ghost Canoe
By A Customer
Ghost Canoe is an awesome adventure and mystery rolled in to one story. The unique setting and the suspense of the story keep you very anxious to read on. You will never want to put it down! I liked the way the author included the Makah Indian Tribe in it. I also enjoyed the way Lighthouse George talked in the Makah Indian language. "Hyas clutus, Tenas Mac, it is very bad." That was my favorite quote in the book because that is what made Nathan want to go into the woods to look for clues. Also that made Nathan find the canoe in the woods, which was my favorite part. When you want a good book to read, check out Ghost Canoe by Will Hobbs!

Relationship Strategies is the most important relationship book you will ever read. Relationship Strategies reveals at last why we chose the partners we chose in relationships, why the honeymoon stage ends, why one partner starts to want sex more than the other and why we repeat the same patterns in relationships over and over. Relationship Strategies explains the subconscious forces that dictate our behavior in relationships and how to get those powerful forces working for us instead of against us.

Relationship Strategies: The E & P Attraction
By Linda Lorein
This is a wonderful book, if you're in a relationship or just want to understand how we (humans) interact with each other. It has opened my eyes about my relationships (male and female). Why we do what we do and why opposites attract (chemistry), and how to work to hold your relationships together so everyone wins and you can get what you need and desire. Thanks Dr. Kappas!

This book ROCKS!
By Albert J Polito
If you can get past the cheesy forward by Florence Henderson and the amateur typesetting, this book will alter the way you see yourself and members of the opposite sex. And you will finally understand!
According to the author, there are two kinds of "sexual personalities": Emotional (E) and Physical (P). Emotionals are more reserved, need sex less often, and are generally more introverted and less expressive. When they hear things, they are liable to infer all kinds of meaning. When speaking, they are direct and say what they mean, however bluntly it may come across. Physicals, on the other hand, are ready for sex on a moment's notice, bond more readily with their lover, are intensely devoted, and draw more attention to themselves, particularly in their appearance and mannerisms. They hear things literally, and speak inferentially, meaning that they must give you all the background in order to make their point. Everyone has some mix of Emotional and Physical traits but generally we're ruled by one and attracted to the other.
This book goes into depth on how the two personalities attract, relate, and clash. It offers ways that they can maintain the attraction without the clashing. It also gives great ways to attract/meet your complimentary opposite. It will shed great light on the relationships of your past and present (as well as future).

The BEST relationship book I've read!!!
By Mojo
This book transformed my life! After reading it about eight years ago, it helped me to understand the compelling attraction & polarity force behind my most intense relationships, and why they would play out the way they did (ending). For the first time I had both the insight to be able to understand the pattern I was in, and the tools to make the changes. I went from being serially monogomous (exciting beginnings with disappointing and painful endings), to happy and content in my 6th year of marriage to a Great guy, and we have a beautiful 4 year old boy. I am fulfilled!!! (And Yes, I am a 76% Physical.Yeowzie!) The quiz helps. Thank-you, thank-you John Kappas. Profound insights, Practical information, Easy reading, Great Book!
