Required reading for hockey coaches
By Benjamin Berland Jr.
The hockey world in Canada has never given Tarasov his due. Maybe its the old cold war reside still lingering or the fact this the system he created almost toppled our hockey system in 72. Whatever the reason, Canadian hockey would not be the juggernaut it is today without Tarasov.

This book gives you great insight into the mind of a man who created an entire hockey system. One can glean some nice things from it if you give it a read.

A great look into one of the best hockey schools
By kamdad
Simply because I remember most of the later events described in this book unfold during my childhood years, I found this book to be most interesting. It provides a great look into some of the hockey's most profound moments, and describes the system that has produced so many great stars. It is definately a must read for anyone interested in the history of the game.

Tarasov at his finest,a "no-holds-barred" dialogue on Hockey
By A Customer
In a blunt and descriptive review one of the greatest hockey coaches ever, points out the differences between hockey his way and hockey "our" way. What made the Russians dominate?? Tarasov reveals the answer...Why the decline of the Russian hockey program?? Tarasov fortells and describes why it happened..Do Russians enjoy playing hockey??...once and for all the father of Russian hockey destroys the myth of the stone faced Russians... For fans who want stories of internatinal hockey..this book has it. For people who want to become familiar with the history of Russian hockey this book will cover it. Coaches will also gain insight into a few of the revolutionary training and tactics that Tarosov introduced to the ice

Review

"An informative comic adaptation of Wired editor-in-chief Anderson's bestselling book on how technological innovation has allowed niche audiences to become more profitable for businesses to sell to. Illustrated in b&w by Clester, the book's visuals help the reader to immediately understand Anderson's arguments. Beginning with an examination of how, up until recently, media producers focused only on creating profitable "hits," Anderson explains how the Internet and digital technology have changed the dynamics of markets and consumers, with the Web making a staggering number of choices available to consumers while allowing smaller market producers of goods to reach new audiences. Although the book offers little in the way of advice or step-by-step guides, it is useful in encouraging readers to visualize Anderson's by-now gospel observations. However, it's not entirely clear how many readers are really interested in learning about Anderson's arguments by having them presented in an abridged comics version. While not as exhaustive as the prose edition, this adaptation is a clear introduction to the many topics Anderson explores." — Publisher's Weekly

CliffsNotes 2.0?
By David
Like the SmarterComic The Long Tail, I'll keep this short and sweet. I really enjoyed the format and presentation of The Long Tail that SmarterComics has delivered. I would recommend this for anyone that has heard about The Long Tail and would like a quick introduction but isn't ready to invest the time in reading the full book. It is also good for people who have read The Long Tail but would like a little refresher.

I read in another review somewhere that this is for people who don't like reading. I don't subscribe to that theory. There are just some topics that I don't need to read 300 pages on.

Pretty obvious stuff
By John
Meh. A two paragraph concept stretched into a book. And it's not exactly earth-shattering stuff.

Essentially, digital retailers with no overhead costs other than hard drive space can make a lot of money selling tons of unpopular stuff, as well as selling popular stuff because there's almost no cost associated with the additional "inventory".

A positive review for an outstanding series
By A Customer
I have read these three books and have found them to be a great look into the Roman Era. Sutcliff presents the scenes beautifully and captures the hearts of readers young( my age, 12) to older people. The books are only slightly related to each other and a few themes are recurring creating a familiar feel to her writing style. I have enjoyed many of her books and thhis one is no exception, beacause several are set in the same time period which not only provides an entertaining read but you can LEARN things about the culture. Sutcliff has a great descriptive mind and it is evident in this series of books. She's probably the best author I've encountered in my short life. Some other of my favourite books by her are Simon, Warrior Scarlet, and Bonnie Dundee. I recommend these books due to the fact they are very good at showing the real side of history not just the fancy-free silly stuff we hear about in other books.

The best fictional accounts of Roman Britain
By o. migillicuddy
I have read these books individually many times. They are depictions of Roman Britain, from when Rome was at its height to when Rome, crumbling, left the island to its own. The glory that was, in all its dirt and grime and blood, and yet it gave civilization, and start of the traditions that would lead to our own American experiment, and the Arthurian legend. Perhaps it has something to do with the idea that we now see England and her offspring, America, in the words at the end of the trilogy: "I sometimes think that we stand at sunset. It may be that the night will close over us in the end, but I believe that morning will come again. Morning always grows again out of the darkness, though maybe not for the people who saw the sun go down. We are the Lantern Bearers, my friend, for us to keep something burning, to carry what light we can forward into the darkness and the wind." A trilogy that inspired me long ago with tales of what the English were.

The Spinning Heart: A Novel, by Donal Ryan

In the aftermath of Ireland's financial collapse, dangerous tensions surface in an Irish town. As violence flares, the characters face a battle between public persona and inner desires. Through a chorus of unique voices, each struggling to tell their own kind of truth, a single authentic tale unfolds.

The Spinning Heart speaks for contemporary Ireland like no other novel. Wry, vulnerable, all-too human, it captures the language and spirit of rural Ireland and with uncanny perception articulates the words and thoughts of a generation. Technically daring and evocative of Patrick McCabe and J.M. Synge, this novel of small-town life is witty, dark and sweetly poignant.

Donal Ryan's brilliantly realized debut announces a stunning new voice in fiction.

From Booklist
Ryan’s debut novel explores the devastating aftermath of Ireland’s recent economic collapse. In a small, predominately working-class town, a community comes apart at the seams following the failure of a crooked construction company (the town’s primary source of employment). People turn on one another as they struggle to find meaning in the new reality of material scarcity and joblessness. Bitterness and mistrust rule the day, as old scores are settled and long-simmering tensions rise to the surface. A different character narrates each chapter, and the same incidents and memories are viewed through different lenses. Woven through each chapter is the story of Bobby, a well-respected, hardworking father and husband whose current family drama is revealed in bits and pieces through the eyes of the various characters. Although the subject matter is overwhelmingly bleak, the prose is lyrical, and the voices are authentic. Flashes of humor and tenderness shine through as well, as the helplessness and frustration of an era is effectively captured through the lives of these small-town residents. --Kerri Price

"At the book’s figurative heart is the construction foreman Bobby Mahon, a young husband and father whose moral decency anchors the story. Both his goodness and his brogue lend the novel an old-fashioned, storybook quality ('He drank out the farm to spite his father') that overlaps convincingly with mentions of Facebook, 'prefab' doors and dubious investments in Dubai to create an affecting portrayal of contemporary rural Ireland. With . . . its rotation of voices — sharing regrets and desires along with town gossip — reminiscent of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying and Edgar Lee Masters’s Spoon River Anthology . . . Ryan writes with compassion, honesty and an appealing deadpan humor." -- The New York Times Book Review

"Ryan’s compelling, insightful tale chronicles the lives of the residents of a tightknit, rural town in the aftermath of the Irish economic collapse. This short, swift, brutally funny romp through the fallout of a national disaster points to the likelihood of emotional crisis when one’s livelihood and purpose disappear without warning . . . Although a great strength of the book is Ryan’s ability to capture the vernacular of contemporary Ireland and its diverse citizens, from newly arrived immigrants to jaded old men “drinking the farm” in local pubs to young, enterprising university graduates with stacks of useless ambition — the story itself might take place in any country affected by the disastrous economic upheavals of recent years." -- The Boston Globe

"A convincing portrait of a good man in a bad time." -- The Wall Street Journal

"Irish author Ryan's debut takes readers to the 'heart' of hardscrabble life in Ireland in the era after the economic boom and bust of 2008. The novel received Book of the Year honors at the Irish Book Awards.  . . . Reminiscent of Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying, this book gives readers a story—or rather stories—told from multiple perspectives, each chapter using a different voice. . . . Disturbing and unnerving but ultimately beautiful." -- Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

"[Ryan] credibly conveys the viewpoints of men and women of all ages in language distinct from one section to the next. . . . [T]his startling debut reads like a modern Irish twist on William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying."-- Library Journal (Starred Review)

"Equal parts mournful and hopeful, the book pays keen attention to the ways lives coalesce and fall apart in time of personal and national crises. . . . Ryan has created a faithful portrait of a time and place in his debut novel, but his truest accomplishment lies in the fact that, though the individual accounts add up to a greater whole, each story stands on its own." -- Publishers Weekly

"The prose is lyrical, and the voices are authentic. Flashes of humor and tenderness shine through as well, as the helplessness and frustration of an era is effectively captured through the lives of these small-town residents." -- Booklist

"While The Spinning Heart's form and premise harken to Under Milk Wood and the Spoon River Anthology, its content is uniquely evocative of Ireland, thanks to the cultural archetypes Ryan examines and the contemporary realities and nuances he deftly portrays." -- Irish America

"The traditional epithet for a good first novel is 'promising'. The Spinning Heart, however, is far more than that. Instead, it's the unambiguous announcement of a genuine and apparently fully-formed new talent." -- The Spectator

"A funny, moving, technically inventive first novel.... Structurally the novel gestures to William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, while Ryan's sensitive observations on Irish life seem responsive to the work of his compatriot Patrick McCabe. That Ryan does not look out of place in such literary company is a measure of his achievement." -- The Financial Times

"The recession has hit rural Ireland, and 'the sky is falling down." Through 21 different voices, Donal Ryan's virtuoso debut novel pieces together a fractured portrait of a community in shock. . . . What is so special about Ryan's novel is that it seems to draw speech out of the deepest silences; the testimony of his characters rings rich and true – funny and poignant and banal and extraordinary – and we can't help but listen." -- The Guardian

"I have ordered a copy of The Spinning Heart for everyone I know who loves to read. What a treasure of a book." -- Natascha McElhone

"I can't imagine a more original, more perceptive or more passionate work than this. Outstanding." -- John Boyne

"A first novel that's up-to-date in its concerns but that also transcends the merely topical in its bleak, if often savagely funny, vision of a rural Ireland. Donal Ryan has an imaginative insight into his characters that's all his own and a furious energy to his prose that gives arrestingly vivid life to these blighted souls." -- John Boland

"Ryan's feat is considerable. Narrative and character information is distributed among so many different voices and yet we never feel at a loss. Best of all, Ryan's ear for speech is acute...Given a novel as brilliantly realized as The Spinning Heart, I see no reason to look anywhere but the present. For Donal Ryan, the future is now." -- Declan Hughes

"A new Irish writer of the very first order. Donal Ryan is the real deal." -- The Sunday Independent

"For all the harshness of language and the often brutal experiences, The Spinning Heart is unexpectedly tender. . . . An exciting contemporary novel about the lost and the wounded that listens to the present without discarding either the sins of the fathers or the literary legacy of the past." -- The Irish Times

"Startling audacity... [The Spinning Heart] may be slim in size, but it is hugely ambitious in structure and devastating in its emotional impact. Too often contemporary fiction is criticized for not engaging enough with contemporary issues, but this breathtakingly empathetic account of a community crumbling under the pressures of the recession deserves to stand as a companion piece to Anne Enright's wonderful The Forgotten Waltz, also set against the boom and bust of recent Irish history." -- Lisa Allardice, Guardian First Book Award Chair and Guardian Review Editor

"The novel's multiple voices – including one terrific posthumous one – are a virtuosic achievement. . . . The novel's last line – "What matters only love?" – is peculiarly unpunctuated. Its meaning remains somewhat vague, but perhaps one might take it as a defense of the primacy of love: Could it be that despite all the divisions during this downturn, despite that possibly mocking symbol of the spinning heart on Bobby's father's gate, love is still all that really matters?" -- Rebecca Foster, BookBrowse.com

"Twenty-one honest and scalding human voices conspire to tell the tale of the myriad struggles engendered by financial desperation." -- World Literature Today

"Donal Ryan's heartbreaking (and often hilarious) narratives deliver life during the Irish economic collapse of recent years. His characters' testimonies glow with humor, pathos, wit and irony. . . . Donal Ryan's outspoken, damaged characters exquisitely deliver the psychological traumas and social fissures generated by sudden economic breakdowns." -- Celtic Connection

I didn't even want to finish this book, which is rare for me. The story was chopped up in such small pieces I simply could not follow it. Not only was the time sequence too choppy, so were experiences of the characters. Each chapter was told by a different character. OK. fine. But the time sequence was all over the place in each chapter. Same thing for the characters. A bit here, a bit there. Impossible to identify with anyone or care what happened to anybody.

The Best Irish Novel Of Recent Years
By JOHN
I read this wonderfully written novel in two days - I could barely put it down. It is a sad and poignant story of life in post-Celtic Tiger, recessionary rural Ireland and anyone familiar with it will recognize the people through whose thoughts the novel is narrated. Some of the references may puzzle non-Irish readers and the writing is done in the way the characters speak e.g. "Bobby was always fair sound to me. He's the only one who never slagged me." And there is plenty of grammatically incorrect talk such as "I seen, I done" etc.,but that is necessary for authenticity and the author has captured the individuals' voices perfectly. As sad as the story is, it is also very compassionate in that we get to hear the innermost thoughts of the characters some of whom are regarded as outcasts and weirdos by the locals but who are, in their isolation, possessed of the same essential humanity as the rest of us and who like us all are seeking some kind of redemption.

Page-turner/meditation on human neuroses and misunderstanding
By Jonathan
Excellent prose, if you can get used to the consistent use of rural Irish vernacular. I was able to get used to that pretty quickly (as a non-Irish person) and it was a page-turner right from the start. Each chapter is the inner monologue of a different person in this small, working class Irish town. There is lots of darkness and humor-because it is Irish! Most of the characters are either likable or not-likable but fascinating. This was my first Donal Ryan. I will read more of his stuff.
