A positive review for an outstanding series

I have read these three books and have found them to be a great look into the Roman Era. Sutcliff presents the scenes beautifully and captures the hearts of readers young( my age, 12) to older people. The books are only slightly related to each other and a few themes are recurring creating a familiar feel to her writing style. I have enjoyed many of her books and thhis one is no exception, beacause several are set in the same time period which not only provides an entertaining read but you can LEARN things about the culture. Sutcliff has a great descriptive mind and it is evident in this series of books. She's probably the best author I've encountered in my short life. Some other of my favourite books by her are Simon, Warrior Scarlet, and Bonnie Dundee. I recommend these books due to the fact they are very good at showing the real side of history not just the fancy-free silly stuff we hear about in other books.

The best fictional accounts of Roman Britain

I have read these books individually many times. They are depictions of Roman Britain, from when Rome was at its height to when Rome, crumbling, left the island to its own. The glory that was, in all its dirt and grime and blood, and yet it gave civilization, and start of the traditions that would lead to our own American experiment, and the Arthurian legend. Perhaps it has something to do with the idea that we now see England and her offspring, America, in the words at the end of the trilogy: "I sometimes think that we stand at sunset. It may be that the night will close over us in the end, but I believe that morning will come again. Morning always grows again out of the darkness, though maybe not for the people who saw the sun go down. We are the Lantern Bearers, my friend, for us to keep something burning, to carry what light we can forward into the darkness and the wind." A trilogy that inspired me long ago with tales of what the English were.
